Hanhwa Group announces new complex expansions, new business opportunities

GONGZHOU CITY — The Hanwha Total Petrochemical (HTC) joint venture is commissioning a new polypropylene line at the Daesan integrated refining and petrochemical complex, adding a further 60% to its production capacity to 1.1 million tons annually. Meanwhile, the activation of a fourth propane furnace will increase ethylene production capacity by 10% to 1.5 million tons a year.

The Daesan Complex is a world-class integrated petrochemicals complex, and comprises of a flexible condensate splitter, a competitive steam cracker, and units producing polymers, styrene and aromatics. The upgrade projects, involving over $1.3 billion USD worth of investments over a course of several years, will be able to take advantage of abundant, cost-advantaged petrochemicals from the nearby Sakhalin oil project, allowing the complex to supply both the domestic and export market in Asia. The increase in polypropylene production will strengthen the manufacturing volume of high-value-added, durable thermoplastic goods, such as underfloor heating pipes, or low-weight automotive parts.

Hanwha Defense, a subsidiary of the Hanhwa Group has joined forces with the PDF to facilitate the research and development of advanced weapons systems and major components. The company recently signed a cooperative research and development agreement with the PDF's equipment development and acquisition bureau, which would allow for technology transfers in various fields through joint research and development between research institutes, universities, companies, and the Federal government.

As per the agreement, the two entities will conduct joint R&D, analysis, and test evaluations of military-grade equipment and technologies. One of its first projects will be providing manufactured components to shipping companies such as COSCO, Hyundai Merchant Marine, QASC Shipping, Sinokor Merchant Marine, or Sinotrans. Altogether, the country's largest container shipping companies have a total capacity of 4,578,096 TEU - and the FEUSSR is interested in expanding the size of its merchant fleet to compete with fleets from Panama, Liberia, and the Marshall Islands.

Hanwha’s joint R&D agreement with the PDF is expected to further enhance the company's technical power and brand power in the global defense market.

New study shows electrifying cement with nanocarbon black can open new uses of concrete

Since its invention several millennia ago, concrete has become instrumental to the advancement of civilization, finding use in countless construction applications—from bridges to buildings. And yet, despite centuries of innovation, its function has remained primarily structural.

A multiyear effort by MIT Concrete Sustainability Hub (CSHub) researchers, in collaboration with the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), has aimed to change that. Their collaboration promises to make concrete more sustainable by adding novel functionalities—namely, electron conductivity. Electron conductivity would permit the use of concrete for a variety of new applications, ranging from self-heating to energy storage.

Their approach relies on the controlled introduction of highly conductive nanocarbon materials into the cement mixture. In a paper in Physical Review Materials, they validate this approach while presenting the parameters that dictate the conductivity of the material.

Nancy Soliman, the paper's lead author and a postdoc at the MIT CSHub, believes that this research has the potential to add an entirely new dimension to what is already a popular construction material.

"This is a first-order model of the conductive cement," she explains. "And it will bring [the knowledge] needed to encourage the scale-up of these kinds of [multifunctional] materials."

Over the past several decades, nanocarbon materials have proliferated due to their unique combination of properties, chief among them conductivity. Scientists and engineers have previously proposed the development of materials that can impart conductivity to cement and concrete if incorporated within.

For this new work, Soliman wanted to ensure the nanocarbon material they selected was affordable enough to be produced at scale. She and her colleagues settled on nanocarbon black—a cheap carbon material with excellent conductivity. They found that their predictions of conductivity were borne out.

"Concrete is naturally an insulative material," says Soliman, "But when we add nanocarbon black particles, it moves from being an insulator to a conductive material."

By incorporating nanocarbon black at just a 4 percent volume of their mixtures, Soliman and her colleagues found that they could reach the percolation threshold, the point at which their samples could carry a current.

They noticed that this current also had an interesting upshot: It could generate heat. This is due to what's known as the Joule effect.

"Joule heating (or resistive heating) is caused by interactions between the moving electrons and atoms in the conductor, explains Nicolas Chanut, a co-author on the paper and a postdoc at MIT CSHub. "The accelerated electrons in the electric field exchange kinetic energy each time they collide with an atom, inducing vibration of the atoms in the lattice, which manifests as heat and a rise of temperature in the material."

In their experiments, they found that even a small voltage—as low as 5 volts—could increase the surface temperatures of their samples (approximately 5 cm3 in size) up to 41 degrees Celsius (around 100 degrees Fahrenheit). While a standard water heater might reach comparable temperatures, it's important to consider how this material would be implemented when compared to conventional heating strategies.

"This technology could be ideal for radiant indoor floor heating," explains Chanut. "Usually, indoor radiant heating is done by circulating heated water in pipes that run below the floor. But this system can be challenging to construct and maintain. When the cement itself becomes a heating element, however, the heating system becomes simpler to install and more reliable. Additionally, the cement offers more homogenous heat distribution due to the very good dispersion of the nanoparticles in the material."

Nanocarbon cement could have various applications outdoors, as well. Chanut and Soliman believe that if implemented in concrete pavements, nanocarbon cement could mitigate durability, sustainability, and safety concerns. Much of those concerns stem from the use of salt for de-icing.

"In North America, we see lots of snow. To remove this snow from our roads requires the use of de-icing salts, which can damage the concrete, and contaminate groundwater," notes Soliman. The heavy-duty trucks used to salt roads are also both heavy emitters and expensive to run.

By enabling radiant heating in pavements, nanocarbon cement could be used to de-ice pavements without road salt, potentially saving millions of dollars in repair and operations costs while remedying safety and environmental concerns. In certain applications where maintaining exceptional pavement conditions is paramount—such as airport runways—this technology could prove particularly advantageous.

While this state-of-the-art cement offers elegant solutions to an array of problems, achieving multifunctionality posed a variety of technical challenges. For instance, without a way to align the nanoparticles into a functioning circuit—known as the volumetric wiring—within the cement, their conductivity would be impossible to exploit. To ensure an ideal volumetric wiring, researchers investigated a property known as tortuosity.

"Tortuosity is a concept we introduced by analogy from the field of diffusion," explains Franz-Josef Ulm, a leader and co-author on the paper, a professor in the MIT Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and the faculty advisor at CSHub. "In the past, it has described how ions flow. In this work, we use it to describe the flow of electrons through the volumetric wire."

Ulm explains tortuosity with the example of a car traveling between two points in a city. While the distance between those two points as the crow flies might be two miles, the actual distance driven could be greater due to the circuity of the streets.

The same is true for the electrons traveling through cement. The path they must take within the sample is always longer than the length of the sample itself. The degree to which that path is longer is the tortuosity.

Achieving the optimal tortuosity means balancing the quantity and dispersion of carbon. If the carbon is too heavily dispersed, the volumetric wiring will become sparse, leading to high tortuosity. Similarly, without enough carbon in the sample, the tortuosity will be too great to form a direct, efficient wiring with high conductivity.

Even adding large amounts of carbon could prove counterproductive. At a certain point conductivity will cease to improve and, in theory, would only increase costs if implemented at scale. As a result of these intricacies, they sought to optimize their mixes.

"We found that by fine-tuning the volume of carbon we can reach a tortuosity value of 2," says Ulm. "This means the path the electrons take is only twice the length of the sample."

Quantifying such properties was vital to Ulm and his colleagues. The goal of their recent paper was not just to prove that multifunctional cement was possible, but that it was also viable for mass production.

"The key point is that in order for an engineer to pick up things, they need a quantitative model," explains Ulm. "Before you mix materials together, you want to be able to expect certain repeatable properties. That's exactly what this paper outlines; it separates what is due to boundary conditions—[extraneous] environmental conditions—from really what is due to the fundamental mechanisms within the material."

By isolating and quantifying these mechanisms, Soliman, Chanut, and Ulm hope to provide engineers with exactly what they need to implement multifunctional cement on a broader scale. The path they've charted is a promising one—and, thanks to their work, shouldn't prove too tortuous.

Department of Defense Internal Memo

It has been decided that the remaining ships of the Iowa Class and the ships of the Montana Class be taken out of service for refitting of new systems. This will be done in shipyards on the East Coast and will take no longer than 3 months. Weapons to be installed on each ship are as follows: 50 40mm Bofors Dual Purpose Guns capable of firing the new 40mm3p All Target Round. Due to the relatively small size of the guns in comparison to other weapon systems on both the Iowa Class and Montana Class, 25 will be placed on each side of the ships on both classes. These guns will be controlled by the fire control systems onboard and be radar guided and have a greatly extended range of fire to engage fast moving targets such as missiles and jets in comparison to their World War Two counterparts. They will also be capable of engaging fast moving boats, either suicide boats or attack boats and slow moving aerial threats. If the ship in question is close to shore, they can be used to engage shore targets but it is not expected they will close with the shore to be able to be brought to bear on hostile targets. As both classes are not on deployment but training drills in the Caribbean and Mid Atlantic Ocean, it is expected that all ships of both classes will be in port for the refits by the end of the weeks and work will start once the crews have departed for the planned three month refit on a rotating basis.

Latest SNC Opinion Polls

The results from the latest opinion polls conducted by SNC TV have been counted and there are some interesting results. 1000 respondants were asked a variety of questions regarding politics and their views on the various organisations around the world.

The first question asked was on support for the current Shchegolyayeva government. We can reveal that support for the government has increased by a massive 11 points to 73% when compared to the previous poll conducted by SNC TV. The main reason for this surge in support comes from the announcement of the Puteyskaya Financial District Project which has already seen a boost to the construction sector.

The next question was regarding Romanovskaya joining the UAN. Last year as we know Romanovan citizens voted to reject joining the UAN by 51.7% while 48.3% supported joining. That support has now plumetted to just 31% according to our survey. Responders cited that they felt the UAN was a largely ineffective organisation and would simply be a waste of time and money for Romanovskaya to participate in.

Responders were also asked their opinion on the ICC. The organisation has a strong presence in eastern Europe with Romanovskaya bordering one of its founding members, CCCP-. Of course Romanovskaya's relationship with the Soviet Union remains strained and this reflects on peoples attitudes towards the wider ICC. Aside from the fact a number of its members have socialist governments, they see the annexation of territories around Europe by ICC members as something Romanovskaya should be very concerned about. As such 91% of people saw the ICC as a threat to Romanovan sovreignty.

MEETING ROOM, IMPERIAL DUMA, VYBORG.

A private meeting was taking place within the Imperial Duma building the day after the latest SNC TV opinion polls were released. Inside, Prime Minister Daria Shchegolyayeva sat at in the middle of the long table flanked by her ministers and other members of her bloc. Shchegolyayeva made her opening remarks:

Fellow ministers and deputies I want to thank you all for attending this meeting today. As I am sure all of you saw the latest news last night with regards to the opinion polls showing support for our government is up to 73%. This is all thanks to the good work by each and every one of you so please, I wish for you to give each other a round of applause.

Everyone then gave a round of applause before Shchegolyayeva continued:

Now of course the purpose of this meeting was not to simply pat ourselves on the back for doing a good job. Rather these polls present an opportunity for us to do more. As things currently stand, we only have a one seat majority which is not exactly comfortable shall we say. We know what is best for this country, we have carried on the traditions and values of the last 50 years that helped transform Romanovskaya to what it is today. It is quite frankly a danger for the opposition to have as much influence that it has.

Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandr Eybozhenko interrupts:

I think I can see where this going. Based on the latest opinion polls we call an election to boost our majority?

Shchegolyayeva responds:

    Precisely.

Culture Minister Vladimir Slyshchenko voices concern:

Won't it look rather opportunistic, I mean this could really back fire on us.

Shchegolyayeva quickly refutes Slychchenko's concerns:

Of course not, we are in fact giving the people what they want. The people want us to continue to govern and implement our policies which have already proven to work. With the recent budget and the new financial district announced we have a lot of things going for us. Our opposition are weak. Illyushin and his followers simply want to burden the state with welfare programs which most people see through as being bad for the country long term. Yevstigneyev on the other hand is so unhinged he will never be able to get enough support to challenge us.

A number of ministers nod their heads in agreement as there is a brief pause. Shchegolyayeva then continues:

I can assure you that I have no plans to reshuffle the cabinet post election when we do win so there is no need to worry someone else is going to take your jobs.

Slyshchenko remains cautious:

I still have a bad feeling about this.

Shchegolyayeva stares down Slyshchenko:

Minister Slyshchenko, I can sure you we will win. Do you want to know how I am so sure? Its because for my entire 35 year career I have always won. I always strive for more, to do better, and I always achieve that. I always win Slyshchenko. Always.

Shchegolyayeva then turns back to talk to the rest of the group:

Now, who wants to win with me?

The rest of the room raise their hands in an unanimous vote of approval.

Caliphate orders arrest of 4 Bahraini Princes

The Anti Corruption Bureau headed by the Sultan of Abu Dhabi has ordered the arrest of 4 Bahraini Princes as part of an investigation into alleged misuse of public funds, abuse of power as well as potentially conspiring against the state. The four arrested Princes all belong to the ruling Al-Hakeem family of Bahrain, two of them being the Bahraini Sultan's second cousins, one being the Sultan's half brother and the last one being the Sultan's fourth son.

The Bureau reported on Thursday that the decision had been taken after the review of documents and reports regarding crimes related to the public sector. An expanded investigation was under way, it added.

“The Sultan of Abu Dhabi has ordered the arrest of the four princes, and their questionings about matters raised in the reports regarding crimes pertaining to public office, such as damage to public funds, exploiting one’s post, abuse of power, and even potential conspiracy against the state, by attempting to depose the current Sultan from his seat.” the Bureau said.

It is also to be noted that 3 of the four arrested have also been previously charged with supposed involvement in the 2015 Sunni-Shia riots, and continue to have those charges despite lack of evidence. The Bahraini Sultan's fourth son is also known for frequently speaking up against the "de-facto absolutist" government, and demanding increased participation by people, something which has even been termed "treason" against the Islamic Caliphate.

Prime Minister Daria Shchegolyayeva greets Premier Tomsky with a warm smile and firm handshake as a melee of photographers scramble to get a shot of this historic meeting. The location of their meeting could not be more iconic. In the city which was the capital of the old Russian Empire, the city that saw the beginning of the Russian Revolution. It was fitting that a city so saturated with history would be once again the venue for another historic moment. This meeting was more than just a meeting between representatives of two nations, it was the reconciliation between Russians for a century old conflict.

Prime Minister Shchegolyayeva: "Premier Tomsky thank you from the bottom of my heart for hosting our delegation here in this beautiful venue. To be the first Prime Minister of Romanovskaya to visit Soviet Russia brings me immense personal pride, and something I hope will set a precedence for going forward."

The respective delegations then made their way inside the Winter Palace, where they toured around the lavish building once the home of the Imperial Family of the Russian Empire. Shchegolyayeva commented to Tomsky how she always dreamed of one day visiting the Winter Palace but never realistically expected it could ever happen. She also commended the Soviet delegation on how well preserved the palace was.

The two delegations then made their way to the meeting room, which saw the doors to closed to ensure privacy from the press. The delegations sat at opposide sides of a long table, with Shchegolyayeva and Tomsky sat in the middle directly across from each other. Shchegolyayeva then got the meeting underway.

Prime Minister Shchegolyayeva: "Members of the Soviet delegation, on behalf of myself and my colleagues I wish to thank you all once again for this opportunity to advance relations between our nations. As I am sure you are aware, there is quite a lot to discuss including the possibility of a formal peace treaty, the issue of the closed border between our nations and the issue of resolving trade embargos and punitive tarriffs. Premier Tomsky I wish to give way to you as to hear your own wishes for this meeting."

~~ Министерство иностранных дел СССР ~~

Title: Romanov State Visit

Premier Tomsky: Our delegation believes this is a great opportunity to set momentum on some outstanding issues that we can realistically solve in the near future. For this specific meeting, we can begin to resolve the trade embargoes and the easement of punitive tariffs in order to encourage the re-opening of trade between both nations. A formal peace treaty can also be something that can be negotiated dependent on the exact terms of such an agreement. Finally, we can negotiate a visa program that eases travel between both nations and opens up the opportunity to travel to both nations to more people, not just family members and students.

Pericles stares down at the body on the floor. The former President of North Bulgaria. They’ll find him in his office tomorrow morning. He looks over at the other body. The former Presidents wife. Also to be found, and it will be ruled a suicide.

Pericles at this point is the Deputy Director of the EYP, and is young. 34. Strong minded, opinionated but knows when to keep it shut.

The former President knew information relating to EYP interference in North Bulgarian elections, as well as attempted interference elsewhere in Europe.

He knew to much.

“And we move on to Southeast Asia...Indochina specifically. The country is currently collapsing into chaos, the FEUSSR is still seen as the culprit after accusations of our interference. They also don’t know who did that suicide bombing.” The Foreign Ministry representative continues to go through his report.

Pericles looks over at his EYP Director. The Director nods his head. Pericles nods back.

“Gentlemen, we can issue a statement on our hopes of peace in South East Asia. It’s disheartening to see such tragedy strike them and we can do what we can to help. Now...what about the Romans?” Pericles watches intently. In the back of his mind is Church Agios Nikolaos...
