Welcome to Geopolity. If you want to join the RP and map see this:

All application forms can be found below, and should be copy-pasted into a factbook and filled out. These must be placed in a factbook, and all Nation Applications must be preserved, unedited, following approval.

For new players, the nation application should be utilized. For those wishing to expand their claim, the expansion application should be used, and for those wishing to bring a puppet to the region to serve as a rebel group within their country, or something to the same effect, the rebel application should be utilized.

Following the completion of any application, a link to the factbook that contains the application should be sent either via telegram to Geopolity Customs for processing, AND/OR may be submitted to the #applications tab on our LinkRegional Discord Channel. Requests for rectifications may be made before you are accepted.

Please allow at least 24 hours for a response. Please note as well that if you apply via Discord that the process will be much quicker than if it is submitted by telegram. Should you ever take significant issue with the review of your application, you may send telegram/Discord DM with your complaints to Labyrnna or any of the RP Coordinators. Response times may vary. This should be reserved for complaints with regards to conduct of the review, not to what rectifications are required.

When your application has been accepted, a notice will be posted on the Regional Message Board. Until said notice is posted, new members are not permitted to post on the Regional Message Board or conduct RP. All posts will be suppressed, and all RP will be invalidated.

Notes:

  • Submission of an application is considered verification that an applicant has read the Geopolity regional rules, and the contents of this factbook, and understand them thoroughly.

  • Land claims should be kept reasonable in size, and ought to hew very closely to the real life conditions of the land being claimed.
Changes to population and GDP will be permitted only marginally, and not at all for wealthier, more populous states. Wikipedia is recommended for largely up to date information on GDP and Population statistics, and in the case of disagreement, will be considered the most valid reference. Should an administrative division be lacking economic statistics one may utilize the GDP per capita of the nation to which it belongs, and multiply that by the population of said administrative division to ascertain its GDP.

  • This region does not use NS Stats in any way, shape or form.

  • Land claims that are varied in scope (taking lots of different bits of modern day states) may be rejected without sufficient reasoning for such a claim fleshed out in the history. Significant displacements of ethno-cultural groups is largely not permitted.

  • With regards to nation names, it is all but required that you utilize your NationStates account name. The administration reserves the right to reject an application if that name should be silly, or otherwise unfit for a nations name.

  • You MUST be an accepted member of the NationStates World Assembly to apply to the region, and this membership must be maintained over the entirety of one’s stay as a RP member of the region. You will be given a single warning upon submission of an application, and there will be no follow-up until WA membership has been achieved. Should you lose WA membership following your acceptance, for any reason, you will be removed from regional Roleplay.

  • Land Claim expansions should not be considered within your first six months of regional membership, and will only seldom be granted. They will be minimal in size and scope, and should be utilized for purposes of story, not as a land-grab. Reliance on such expansions for RP is strongly discouraged, as they will be few and far between. When granted, use of puppets to represent the land being acquired will likely be permitted.

  • Rebel applications should be used sparingly, and may be rejected if the administration feels they are unnecessary to accomplish what is desired. Please note that these rebel groups are 100% internal, and cannot be utilized in other nations without said nations permission, nor can they be used for land claim expansions.

  • Should you be removed from RP for any reason you must submit a new application, following all guidelines presented here.

Geopolity is a Roleplay region steeped in a long history of modern day roleplaying. We refer you to the Regional Message Board (RMB) for examples of such roleplay. Should you have any questions, we encourage you to pose them on the LinkRegional Discord Channel, and while joining the Discord is not mandatory, it is heavily encouraged.

Bite Size History: The Narrow escape from 'Apartheid'
A series of bite-sized history chunks for secondary school children

A policy known as 'Apartheid' (from the Afrikaans word for 'separate') was popular amongst the Boer specifically in the 1940's and 50's and championed by the largely Boer 'National Party'.

Under this policy there was to be a total and complete separation between Europeans and African populations. Not just schools and neighbourhoods, the proposal was to go far beyond this and include beaches, bars, restaurants and even public toilets.

Employment opportunities, housing and education were all to be served in two separate parallel systems. When questioned on detail proponents included such racist ideas of a 'pencil test' whereby a pencil would be inserted into the hair to see if it would fall out when the head was shaken, and tests of the jaw and buttocks. Further tests were proposed to determine various sub-racial groups of 'coloureds' as, for example, Indians were generally considered racially 'superior' to Africans.

A narrow escape
If not for the inclusion of Southern Rhodesia into the South African Union in 1922, with its largely more liberal Anglo-European population and 27,000 white electors, the National Party would have won the 1945 election and Apartheid would have been enacted. Instead the marginally more liberal, but still racist Liberal Party won.

Instead of outright Apartheid, S Africa, S Rhodesia and SW Africa (Namibia), enacted a range of policies and more subtle laws that limited the economic and political power of black Africans' including limiting suffrage, but without formal social and economic separation.

Racist policies and causes of the civil war
Although S Africa and Namibia slowly moved away from the most extreme of these policies, in a reversal, the historically more liberal S Rhodesia split from the union as it tried to implement land reform in a response to sporadic uprisings against white farm owners.

This was the spark for the civil war of the 1960s which saw similar uprisings in Namibia, and a de-facto independence declaration of Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland.

In the next bite-size we will consider the civil war and the emergence of 'Unitism' as an ideology.

Greens unveil manifesto to ban nuclear, tax pollution, and restrict mining

The greens, comprised of the Partido Verde (PV) and Rede Sustentabilidade (REDE), have announced the formation of a party federation ('federação partidária'), allowing them to temporarily unite and campaign as one entity for a period of 4 years.

Party leaders have reportedly been negotiating for months to bring the federation, named 'Verde', into existence.

"The federation will not eclipse the individual interests of our party," said a REDE leader. "We reserve the right to break the federation apart should it neglect our needs and values. The same is true, of course, for our friends in PV."

Verde's manifesto was released earlier this week, setting out its legislative priorities for its time in the People's Congress.

One of its proposals is to convert Brazil into a nuclear-free zone. This would be done by enforcing a moratorium on all uranium and plutonium mining and processing activity within Brazil, turning away nuclear-powered or nuclear-armed vessels from Brazilian territory, preventing the placement of nuclear weapons on Brazilian soil, and forbidding the armed forces from ever researching nuclear weapons.

This would also include the decommissioning of the Angra-I nuclear reactor, as well as the cancellation of the Angra-IV, Natal-I, and Parnamirim-I reactor construction projects. Unused funds would be diverted to help develop renewables infrastructure, such as solar, tidal, or wind power plants.

Another key priority is to implement green tax shift by taxing polluting activities while cutting income taxes. The road use tax, currently levied at $120 reals per vehicle per year, would be bumped up to $300 reals for each vehicle which emits carbon dioxide, and to $200 reals for hybrid cars with an internal combustion engine. Outbound flights to international destinations, or domestic flights with a total flight time of over 4 hours, would be subject to a levy of $30 and $15 reals respectively. The tax would be reflected in ticket pricing and operate as a poll tax.

The federation additionally plans to extend the country's pre-existing cap-and-trade carbon market to agricultural producers as well, who are responsible for almost a quarter of carbon emissions across the country and were formerly excluded due to lobbying.1

The least controversial of Verde's policies is its plan to crack down on illegal mining in the Amazon2, which has been used by organized criminal units to finance their operations, and routinely causes friction between artisanal miners and local indigenous groups.

Meeting in Cape Town to agree maximum tariffs

Prime Minister Mr Bulani Mbeki stands in front of the delegates in the main hall:

"Distinguished guests, delegates, ladies and gentlemen, I would like to warmly welcome you to the Cape Town International Convention Centre.

We have seen in the last few months, the throwing up of barriers to trade through tariffs and the emergence of one bloc in particular whose actions can only be interpreted as trying to starve the west for resources and the global south of markets to sell to. Tariffs of 12% for non-precious metals, 18% for vegetable products, and 12% for ores call back to an outdated idea that trade is a zero sum game. It is not.

Global trade allows countries to specialize in what they do best, and benefit from the comparative advantage of others. It promotes competition, innovation, and efficiency in the global market. Free trade creates more opportunities for businesses, consumers, and workers, and enhances the welfare of all parties involved.

We meet here today not to set up another 'bloc', but to promote the free flow of trade and goods to achieve rising prosperity and benefits for all peoples by providing a framework for reduced tariffs, quotas, and other restrictions. To give those of us who provide raw materials markets to those who produce goods and to feed the world affordably and raise living standards for all.

We will do this not by limiting choice and establishing a 'bloc' but simply by agreeing 'maximum' tariffs that those present to agree to and an agreement that tariff and trade deals should not exceed those set out.

The International Trade Association will:

  • Establishment of agreed categories for goods and services for trade and tariff purposes

  • Maximum Trade Tariffs between member states

  • Protection of intellectual property

  • 'Mirroring' of tariffs' established by the GSA and other blocs between member nations in an attempt to secure lower tariffs for all.

  • An arbitration service and small secretariat based in a city (we personally suggest somewhere in Indhiya or Infiny).

Signatories will be permitted to maintain their own technical and quality standards and impose this on imports and agree tariffs structures and trade deals with third parties through additional agreements less than the maximum agreed tariffs of the ITA."

The preparation work has produced an initial tariff structure as below (taking the highest submitted):

    Animal products: 12.5
    Dairy products: 12.5
    Fruit and vegetables: 12.5
    Cereals: 0
