Drop by our region sometime and say hi. That's where the actual action is.
We understand that diving into a new roleplaying universe can be a bit overwhelming. Much like the “Session Zero” in tabletop RPGs—where everyone agrees on the rules and expectations before the adventure begins—this guide sets out the core principles and guidelines for all participants in The Outback. Follow these rules to help ensure that our world stays balanced, immersive, and fun for everyone. Note: You must be an active member of the World Assembly residing in The Outback to participate in our roleplay. Learn how here. Policy updated 25 May 2025 1. Balance & Authenticity 2. Layout by Walkabout ISSUE #1 ![]() |The Official Newsletter of The Outback| ![]() THE OUTBACK REMEMBERS “Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness.” – Desmond Tutu Six months ago, there wasn't much to be hopeful about in the Outback. A perfect storm of personal tragedy and gameplay toxicity from allies darkened our skies and threatened to end this great experiment of ours. It was a time of bleak outlooks and hard conversations on whether or not several of us would leave the game. It wasn't a great time to be here. But the funny thing about hope is that it always finds its way back in. With the support of regions like The West Pacific, The Plains of Perdition, Europeia and others - regions that celebrate community over raw ambition - The Outback saw genuine investment of diplomacy, technology, and friendship. With the advancement of such overwhelming support, we saw hope return and a vision of what The Outback could be began to take shape. As a region we've enjoyed success in the General Assembly and the Sovereign Seven, the birth of a vibrant game-side community on the regional message board, military victories by way of the Bushrangers and operations such as the record-setting liberation of Lonia Kreptia Llor, the recruitment and election of respected gameplayers, the rise of the Outback Bush League, and finally, this inaugural edition of the Shoutback! I'd be remiss if I didn't acknowledge the Outbackers that stayed true throughout the Troubles. You all believed in our region and made it your home. Thank you all for supporting every bit as much as our great allies. You deserve our best efforts and our continued hope for the future. - Walkabout, Delegate of The Outback AROUND THE WORLD WITH WAUKA MOUNTAIN Hello, my name is Wauka Mountain aka Dilber, and I am the recently appointed Governor of Foreign Affairs for the Outback. You might ask, why should I care about anything you have to say? I have been involved in foreign affairs for a long time, with experience as Delegate of the West Pacific, Minister of Foreign Affairs for The West Pacific, and known trafficker of the current delegate of The West Pacific. You might ask, was it smart to traffic someone that had the potential to become delegate and get revenge if they so chose, and to that I say, “Next Question”. There have been many important events that have been going on in Nationstates recently, such as the collapse of the Brotherhood of Malice, the rise of multi-factionalism in the General Assembly, the resignation of the Prime Minister for potentially having too many big banks, and whatever is going on in the Anglosphere. I, however, am not going to talk about any of that because I could never live up to Rhaza getting warned for posting a link to a radio show. Instead, here is a quick rundown of what has happened in The Outback since I became in charge of foreign affairs. If you have any direct questions, or want to know more about the government of the Outback, please contact Varanius and not our government directly. This is a proven method for how to affect change in the Outback. THE OUTBACK BUSH LEAGUE ![]() It’s here. It’s wild. It’s footy like you’ve never seen before. The Outback Bush League bursts onto the scene with the launch of its inaugural season. This full-contact, full-throttle sports roleplay is inspired by the grit and glory of Australian rules football. An impressive 24 teams stepped up to the mark, each bringing with them fierce guernseys, stacked player rosters, and rich team histories that stretch from dusty country ovals to bustling bush communities. Across 24 regular season rounds played over twelve intense weeks, clubs will battle it out for pride, points, and a place in the coveted Finals Series, a four-week gauntlet where legends will be made and hearts will be broken. The siren’s about to sound. The ball’s in the air. A BIRD'S EYEVIEW OF ROLEPLAY ![]() The Office of Regional Cartography (ORC) announced on August 3rd that the regional map had finally been updated to reflect the current state of borders between residents. At a press conference in front of ORC’s brand new office, Chief Cartographer Dr. Safford (no relation with Hon Dr. Safford, leader of Astoria) detailed the changes to the map while dodging questions from the boisterous crowd of journalists that seemed more interested about the allegations that Dr. Safford was a marsupial lover during his youth. “The map now no longer contains the vestiges of the old nations that have ceased to exist,” Dr. Safford explained, “Instead, their spots have either been left empty in anticipation of groups of settlers looking for a new home or already been taken by their opportunistic neighbors looking to expand.” While Shoutback! was unable to get a comment from Dr. Safford himself on the matter (he was last seen speeding away from ORC’s premises in a black SUV with tinted glass while being chased by a group of rabid reporters), we’re excited to see that several new nations have taken their place in the map. We hope to hear more from these nascent states in the future! CHRISTMAS...IN JULY??? ![]() Residents of The Outback woke up on the morning of July 20th to find the entire region covered with snow and Liberty the Emu, the regional mascot, donning a Santa Cap. Already confused, they were further disoriented when a mysterious figure named “Branta Claus” appeared in front of them to announce the commencement of Xmas in July, a week-long event that would see the Outbackers consumed with Christmas fever. Before anyone could ask any questions, the red-clad Santa lookalike disappeared as quickly as they came, leaving everyone further disoriented. However, Outbackers quickly realized that it wasn’t something they could brush off; the so-called “Christmas fever” had seeped into the highest levels of government and seemed to affect pretty much every aspect of the region. The Questions of the Day, hosted by Moon, turned into entirely Christmas-related queries from the very same day. All the regional officers started flying a winter-themed flag, with the ensuing flagmania reaching even some citizens like Vaderia and The blue emu. The WFE, long sporting a familiar green and red hue that brought comfort to the Outbackers’ eyes, was suddenly changed into a harsher palette of blues. All the while, Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” was blasting over the regional PA system. The mysterious yet surprisingly cheerful atmosphere was lifted a week later on the 26th, when “Branta Claus” appeared once again and declared “festive season” to be over, before gifting everyone a collector’s ornament (a koala with a little Santa cap, very cute) and disappearing. The region returned back to normalcy soon thereafter and although an investigation was launched to determine who “Branta Claus” truly was and how he managed to seize control of the entire government for a week, the findings have proven to be inconclusive so far. THE SINISTER SEVEN STRIKES AGAIN...AND AGAIN... After a relatively quiet June, though one still packed with several remarkable repeals, the Sovereign Seven has been on a hot streak and shows no signs of slowing down. The last four General Assembly resolutions to pass have all been repeals authored by Sovereign Seven members, including major pieces of legislation such as the Compliance Commission and the Diplomat Protection Act. Each of these measures passed with at least 60% support, underscoring that this momentum is both real and sustainable. Now, far from resting on their laurels, the Sovereign Seven is pushing perhaps its most significant repeal yet: the repeal of GA#17, WA General Fund, Wonderfully authored by Walkabout and Varanius. For nearly 17 years, the General Fund has financed the General Assembly, placing an undue burden on World Assembly nations across the multiverse with its many flaws. The minor update on August 7th marks a turning point, a chance to envision a World Assembly free from those burdens. With the Sovereign Seven’s recent successes energizing the National Sovereigntist movement, the path forward for the WA is looking decisively sovereigntist. This issue of Shoutback! was edited and formatted by Walkabout and Lunagard, and features articles by Walkabout, Lunagard, Wauka Mountain, and Faralried ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
Top 12 teams at the end of regular season play advance to the Finals Series. What is Outback Rules Football? Outback Rules Footballl is an adaptation of Australian Rules Football played in The Outback.
Two teams of eighteen players compete to score points by kicking the ball between the opponent’s goal posts. A kick through the central two tall posts scores a goal worth six points, while a ball passing between a tall post and a shorter outer post scores a behind, worth one point. The sport is known for its continuous flow, spectacular high marks (catches), physical contests, and the balance of individual skill with strategic team play. There is no offside rule, which makes movement and positioning dynamic and constantly shifting. While the professional While Outback Rules shares many of the core features of Australian Rules Football, it differs in a few key ways. The league currently fields twenty-four teams, compared to the AFL’s eighteen, which results in a longer regular season and more games overall. The Finals Series is also structured differently. Outback Rules uses a twelve-team tournament in which the top four regular-season finishers receive first-round byes, giving them a direct path into the quarterfinals. In contrast, the AFL’s Finals Series features only eight teams and no byes. Participation in Outback Rules begins with a week-long sign-up period on The Outback’s Regional Message Board, where would-be managers officially enter their teams. During this time, players are encouraged to complete several core tasks, such as selecting a mascot, designing the logo, assembling a player roster, and developing lore in a written dispatch. Each of these elements contributes to the team’s starting skill level for the season, rewarding creativity and preparation. Once the season is underway, teams can continue to earn bonuses by posting short roleplay scenes to the RMB before the cutoff on game days. These extra touches can boost performance, but random chance still plays a significant role in every match, as results are ultimately determined through a scorinator, a scoring simulator that blends statistics with unpredictability. Currently, game days fall on Saturdays, known as Saturday Ticket, and Wednesdays, dubbed Midweek Mayhem, giving the league a steady, but manageable pace.
