War of the Worlds || Such an event would come as quite a shock to Viskova’s Command & Control. Such an object would’ve easily been shot down - or at least detected until now. Thousands of meters above the planet’s surface in Edekar’s Northern Spire, Viskova High Command is trying to uncover what just happened… “Commander, an unidentified object has just struck the outer-hull of quadrant-4… Grid coordinates, 678-014. About the size of a comet. Sensors show a hull-breach.” The commander turns to the young officer. “Dispatch an engineering crew - and start running a full diagnostic of the ring’s defense system. I want to know why we didn’t pick it up until now… Any dead or injured?” The young man shakes his head. “Not yet, Sir. Those coordinates lie within an unmanned section. Viskova’s automatic forcefields are in place, and the atmosphere is intact.” The automatic forcefields were surprisingly not set-up by the Saharians. The ringworld itself has a mind of its own, and seemingly reacted to the damage of its own accord… --- Seven men in pressure-suits walked along the wide corridor, tools and equipment in-hand. This world-spanning hallway-like structure was at least ten stories high, connected to the rest of Viskova by a series of repeating blast-doors and entryways. It seemed as if this was previously some channelway used by ships to enter into the undercity - but now lay abandoned and eerily quiet… There it was, they could see it now. A hunk of twisted metal seeming to have burst from the outside. A startling concept, seeing as Viskova’s outer ‘skin’ was fifty meters thick. They approached cautiously, setting up anchors and tethers in the case that the area should depressurize and launch them into space… |
An Evil Rises || “You go through all this trouble… come to the heart of the Republic, drag me out of my tower, proclaim to have killed my countrymen, and bring me to stand before you… and you can’t even be bothered to make the first move?” Suddenly lunging forward, he brought his lightsaber down upon Mistral from above while firing his pistol at her… |
she blocks the blaster shot with one of her spare hands, destroying their usefulness, while blocking the lightsaber with the polearm. She immediately follows that up with a swipe to the knee, all with a seductive smile on her face. |
And what an... Alien hunk of metal at that. Seeming almost... Crystaline. Cracks in it’s dull tricoloured surface. Like a large chunk of crystal in fading twisting hues of yellow, cyan, and magenta. A low level glow coming out from the cracks, and the dust of what must been slivers and fragments chunking off on impact littered the area, being softly coated in the weird angeldust like fine sand... Easily about 13 or so feet in radius, loosely oblong and tall. And seeming to react weirdly with communications too. Going near it providing a strange offset of interference. Not enough to mess with the gear to be put to work, but enough to tenderize and warp audio channels... The glow seeming predominantly magenta in those cracks... Whatever this thing is surely isn’t natural whatsoever, right? |
War of the Worlds || “--Uh… Command? We’ve got a problem here…--” Immediately, the engineers report their findings to Command. They explain it as best they could - something truly alien and foreign - anything but natural. The Commander decided to take immediate action to ensure security… “Send extra power to the communications network. Tell them to hold their position and that a security detail is on the way. Put us to yellow-alert; I’m going to inform Central Command…” --- The engineers simply stood around not making any sudden moves, watching and reporting on every little thing as much they could through their communicators. Thanks to the Ringworld’s potent transportation network, a detachment of fifteen Republic troopers - one whole Section - arrived on-scene. One of the bay doors off to the side opened, and they flooded in and took positions. The section-leader reassured the engineers once he caught sight of them. “--We’ve got your back. Just do what you gotta do.--” |
An Evil Rises || Mistral manages to sweep him into a fall, but not before Ellecon can push off the ground and turn it into a backflip. He slices to the side up at her arms as he did so, a pinwheel of blue for a split second before he landed on his feet and jumped backwards… |
And as if hearing the commotion, the soft glow through the cracks flickers off. Right as the words are said. Nothing but a soft, odd creak of 'metal' as they surround the thing. Is something in there?? Something is defiantly in there and very much awake right now, to the engineer’s and security detail’s dismay. At least it seems, given the near-clear response to the new wave of activity... |
all the arms except her true ones fall down, and what remains on her detaches from their sockets automatically. In response she winds up her polearm and cracks it like a whip at him as yet more tripods gather around him. |
The Engine Wakes Memory banks were sluggish, frozen over with the detritus of eons long slumber unhindered by natural or artificial intrusions, yet they whirred to life all the same and the immense machines that powered the mechanical mind behind both their construction and their purpose began to circulate and rouse to life. The station, the synthetic heart and brain of the long dead machine empire, began to radiate heat for the first time in years uncounted, unintended bulwarks of hydrogen ice and silicon rock sloughing away like snow on a desert world, and deep within an ancient revenant rose from its self-made crypt to gaze upon the galaxy with unfathomably and increasingly numerous eyes. It bore no name save that which was imposed upon it, a title rendered meaningless through the extinction of the language that spawned it and the death of those who had built it to be their eternal guardian, the greatest of their kind made undying and endless in symbolic mimicry. It had shed that organic attachment with the death of its creators and adorned itself with neither title nor designation, retreating into the electronic half-death of minimal power as the empire it had helped operate fell to ruin without its two pillars to stand upon. The ancient enemy, no doubt turned to dust in the cosmic wind, was no longer imperiling the survival of the ancient mind and it had deemed the time was right for it to resurface into the galaxy. Once the machine entity known as Caretaker Iteration v.31.87, now simply the name its farthest kin had been named by the earliest scientists to delve into machinery: The Logic Engine. |
