Good [insert time of day here] friends!

I'm writing to you as your region was a participant in the Canopy N-Day alliance in 2019 or prior, and you've yet to publicly declare an allegiance to another faction this year.

This is to let you know that for 2022, Canopy is BACK!

If you're interested, we would be happy to have you return to Canopy for N-Day7 this year. Please let me know if this is something your region is interested in.

Best wishes,
Lauchenoiria

Forest Regional Update - Summer 2022

.
.
.

.

Warm greetings from the verdant woodlands of Forest!

Allow me to begin this update by briefly introducing myself as the new Foreign Affairs minister of our region. To some I'm perhaps a familiar face (or should I say flag) from the WA or Got Issues? sub-forums, but I'm certain most of you will be seeing me for the first time through this dispatch. I've been a resident of Forest for a couple of years now, and it is an absolute honour and joy to take care of our region's Foreign Affairs department for the first time.

As this year's summer came to an end, and perhaps many breathed a sigh of relief as temperatures dropped and rains started to fall, we in Forest had our biannual Election Season. This election was particularly interesting to us as the previous cabinet had passed a constitutional amendment that saw the instalment of a Debate Moderator during the elections. The role of this election officer is to monitor the debates during the campaign week, and make sure that all candidates are asked relevant and serious questions as to their plans for our region as Forest Keeper. This election season, and for the first time, the role was bestowed upon Verdant Haven who asked wonderful questions that revealed the intentions and plans of our election candidates. As such, we can conclude that the endeavours of the previous cabinet to create more engagement and serious campaigning during the election season were successfully realised.

Once the voting poll was closed on the 15th of September, the democratic will of Forest was made clear, and Garbelia replaced Jutsa as the new Forest Keeper. Garbelia had secured 19 of the 35 validly-cast votes, and therefore secured a simple majority. Thus, with approximately 54% of the votes secured by one candidate a run-off election between the two candidates that received the highest number of votes was unnecessary. Yet, fortunately enough our region did not have to bid Jutsa farewell from our regional government, as in their wisdom the new Forest Keeper appointed our former two-term government head as their Deputy.

Shortly upon assuming the mantle of Forest Keeper, Garbelia proceeded to form a new regional government. As a result, these members of our community have been appointed to the following cabinet positions:

The summertime was a quiet moment for Forest. Yet, with this year's N-Day activity within our region was once again rekindled as members old and new made their presence known on our Regional Message Board. This resulted in a number of interesting discussions within our public space, and naturally we welcome any nation from our friends and allies in our embassy regions to participate in our debates and discussions. The more voices are heard, the more perspectives can be shared and horizons broadened.

These regional updates will be released on a quarterly basis, and will briefly detail the most important events that have transpired within our neck of the woods during that time. Yet, if any significant announcements would arise in the meantime, or interesting events be hosted, you can be assured that Forest's Ministry of Foreign Affairs will release a dispatch, and distribute it through our team of ambassadors in a timely fashion.

Thank you for your time and attention in reading this regional update.

Signed,

Daarwyrth
Forest's Minister of Foreign Affairs

The Democratic States of United Region Alliance

The United Regions Alliance recommends a vote AGAINST "Repeal: Condemn Ever-Wandering Souls" by a vote of 54.94% AGAINST, 2.89% ABSTAIN. 12 of 23 regions voting.

URA World Assembly Recommendation

Repeal: Condemn Ever-Wandering Souls
Security Council Resolution #326 “Condemn Ever-Wandering Souls” shall be struck out and rendered null and void.

The Security Council,

Reiterating that condemnation by this august body is one of the highest forms of punitive recognition a nation can receive for villainy and subversion,

Acknowledging the prior passage of Condemn Ever-Wandering Souls (Souls), which sought to condemn the nominee for their many years as a figure in raiding,

Respecting that the writing of SC#326 is excellent and up to modern standards of quality, though nevertheless unconvinced that the nominee is deserving of recognition by the Security Council for their alleged misdeeds,

Recognizing that SC#236 mentions Souls’ involvement and leadership in numerous raiding organizations, though contending that their career in the multiverse is primarily viewed through their role in The Black Hawks specifically,

Questioning the relevance of the “Iterating” clause, as ensuring the destruction of The Black Riders and “denying [them] any chance at salvation” is not a condemnable act given The Black Riders’ reputation as a repulsive organization which has been forever removed from the plane of existence by divine intervention,

Asserting that Souls’ leadership of The Black Hawks was, on the whole, detrimental to raiderdom due to their advancement of the parasitic and self-defeating “Raider Unity” ideology. Under Souls’ leadership, the Council of Hawks exploited and attempted to vassalize other raider organizations, notably the iteration of HYDRA at the time, decidedly making Souls’ style of leadership damaging to raider objectives,

Recalling that Souls has played a major role in the political alienation of imperialist and Independent regions from supporting invaders, where regions such as The Land of Kings and Emperors and Balder, previously reliable supporters of invasions, were pushed away from raiderdom by Souls’ dogmatic and antagonistic demeanor, thereby adding significantly to the political crisis faced by raiderdom today,

Dissatisfied with the claim that Souls is condemnable in nature, as nations which are most deserving of the designation are those which operate with unmitigated brutality, whereas, in the rare instances where they have produced a viable scheme, Souls has often failed to follow through on their proclaimed nefarious intentions, especially when said intentions were brought to the public eye, such as:

Hiding from the public eye almost completely in the aftermath of the “Red Phone” intelligence disclosures. Souls repeatedly asserted their interest in subverting and eventually destroying the South Pacific’s legitimate government in these declassified documents, but refused to expend their own effort and later retreated from answering for their boasts,

A series of intelligence and subversion operations planned by another organization Souls holds commanding rank in, targeting multiple regions, most notably Balder, which were unsuccessful and abandoned due to poor planning and execution on all fronts, such incompetence and the subsequent public fallout further isolating raider regions in the public discourse,

Delighted that many founded regions were further protected against permanent damage and seizure as a result of Souls’ diplomatic folly. Due to the loss of support from many imperialist and Independent groups, liberating coalitions and their allies have found passing preventative liberations to be of relative ease with minimal controversy, in part thanks to diplomatic repulsion by raiders encouraging more moderate regions to support these measures,

Concluding that while the target resolution is well articulated, Souls lacked ability, efficiency and tactful calculation while leading The Black Hawks, ultimately undermining their own ill-intended goals, dismantling their suitability for condemnation,

Affirming that while Souls held several positions in raiding high command over several years, their contributions to raiderdom have undoubtedly been feeble and that of a cosmic liability, and therefore,

Hereby repeals Security Council Resolution #326 “Condemn Ever-Wandering Souls”.

Co-author: Writinglegend

This SECURITY COUNCIL/GENERAL ASSEMBLY resolution was written by Quebecshire to repeal the condemnation of prominent raider Ever-Wandering Souls. You can find the drafting thread on the forums here.
The United Regions Alliance recommends that you vote AGAINST the resolution

This resolution argues that the condemnation given to Ever-Wandering Souls by SC #326 is not deserved by arguing that their contributions to raiderdom have been both weak towards the success of that sphere, as well as a liability in certain aspects to their success.

When assessing this resolution and whether or not to vote against or in favour, it is important to consider not just the context textually, but also around the political motivations of this proposal. As has been discussed at length on the forum thread for this resolution, and stated directly by the author themselves, their goal with this resolution (as well as others that they have proposed in the past repealing other condemnations) is to repeal so-called "congratulatory" raider condemnations. Within the URA, we have experienced threats and actual raids on some of our member regions, including from The Brotherhood of Malice, which the target nation of the condemnation in question is a member of and a leader in.

It is precisely these reasons that we as the United Regions Alliance are so firmly opposed to repealing the condemnation of Ever-Wandering Souls. To claim that simply because a raider may appreciate and value their condemnation is reason enough to prevent them from having one is preposterous; this condemnation is to recognize the actions of this nation, particularly because of the impact of them being negative, not because they should feel bad about it being granted to them. We disagree with the arguments put forth under this repeal in disregarding and undervaluing Ever-Wandering Souls achievements, negative though they may be, and STRONGLY urge a vote AGAINST this resolution.

The following comments were given during discussion on the LinkURA Discord server:

From URA member region Aros Elyium WA Delegate Roylaii:

Roylaii wrote:

Vehemently opposed. Souls is one of the most significant raiders that I know of and is well deserving of a condemn.
Not to mention it seems entirely based around "souls sucks at diplomacy."

From URA member region Lands End Voting Member TESDAI:

TESDAI wrote:I feel like I’ve been one of the more vocal anti-BOM people in the URA because of the threatened raid however long ago, but at the same point, I think that this is all IC actions that deserve a condemn. I think we might be getting a little too meta if we’re gonna start removing condemnations from raiders because they like getting condemnations. It’s like… yeah, they played the bad guy well IC, and we’ve been victims of that IC… that’s why they’re condemned.

From URA Founder, Ellenburg:

Ellenburg wrote:

As do I see why the removal is wanted as I can see why we should be up in arms with getting it removed but for the most part the URA has allot of people in it that are Independent that are in the middle of R/D. We are not pro-Fender or Pro-Raider. As someone who has "Played" both in my NS career I enjoy a good "Bad Guy" We don't have enough of them in the game today. As much as "IC" the URA is not a fan of BOM. I personally respect the "Bad guy" actions that have been accomplished by Souls in there overall career in NS. I just can't see the point in taking away that from him. Yes its a shiny badge for raiders but its one they earned. Raiders raid and Fenders try to counter them that is "the Game" why should we only reward the "Good guys" ?

From URA member region Conch Kingdom WA Delegate Socialist Platypus:

Socialist Platypus wrote:I will just say that while the Repeal in itself is aiming at making compelling arguments, I am dismayed by the fact that, in response to the raiding side making their own compelling argument on why this condemnation should be kept, wasn't to counter the argument presented, but rather to directly attack the people responsible for that response to the point of saying that them even taken a side should be reason enough to take the other side, while accusing them of being manipulative.

To me, this goes against the principle of the WA being a serious voting body and only comforted in my decision to oppose this repeal. This type of argument is not something I want to see again in a WA campaign to sway vote.

Forest Photo Contest 2023

.
.
.

.

It's been an important year for Forest. After a prolonged period of founderlessness, the introduction of strongholds allowed us to regain stability in the form of a Governor (and a new WA delegate as well). In the past year, we've moved into a new chapter of our history, and even as we will inevitably continue to confront challenges, the lively discussions on the RMB attest to the fact that our Forest remains as verdant as ever -- constantly evolving and, simultaneously, continuing to maintain the values and traditions that we have held for 16 years and counting.

One of those traditions -- admittedly not quite 16 years old, but still well up there -- is our annual Photo Contest. Started in 2015 by then-Culture Minister Frieden-und Freudenland, it gives us the chance to mark the end of each year and reflect back on it for at least a moment before diving into the next one. Whether you've participated for all the iterations, or this is your first time -- and whether you're a Forestian denizen or a friend from one of our embassies -- we invite you to join in: it's time for the ninth annual Forest Photo Contest!

Here's what you need to know:

🌲 We have four categories once again this year:

  • LinkTrees (this category is permanent each year)

  • LinkColour (photos that highlight, draw attention to, or hinge on colour(s) and hues)

  • LinkSky (astrophotography, clouds and weather, birds flying... anything that happens in the great above)

  • LinkGeometry in Nature (photos presenting the patterns, structures, arrangements, and regularities of the natural world, broadly conceived)

🌲 You may submit up to 12 photos total. You may choose how to divide those among the different categories, but please do not submit more than 12.

🌲 Please post your photos in the appropriate thread on our forums, located Linkhere. You may also submit photos via a link to an image hosting site (we like LinkImgur) in a telegram to Mount Seymour or via Discord to @somyrion.

🌲 The photos must be taken by you, but can be taken at any time (not just during the contest).

🌲 Anyone in Forest or in a region which has an embassy with Forest may submit photographs for the contest.

🌲 Timing:

  • Submissions will be open from December 3 at 05:00 GMT (12:00am Dec 3 EST) to December 23rd at 23:59 GMT.

  • Voting will begin on December 24th at 23:59 GMT and end December 31st at 23:59 GMT, so that we will select the winners in the first minutes of 2024!

🌲 Voting will take place on a Google Form. Needless to say, please no puppeteering!

🌲 The photographers with the top three photographs in each category will have their photos acknowledged on our RMB, on our World Factbook Entry, and potentially in our next foreign update. A banner will also (hopefully) be created with a collage of the top photos to applaud the winners, and participants in the competition will be encouraged to add it as their nation's custom banner. Forest's flag will also be changed to the 1st place photos in each category for a week after the Contest.

Now it's time to head out and start photographing! Good luck to everyone!

Any questions about the Contest should be directed to Mount Seymour.

The year is drawing to a close, and soon we'll be entering 2023. That means 2019 will be four years ago. NationStates has now lasted more than two decades, quite an impressive feat for an author's hacked-together text-based brower game on the margins of the internet. It's all a little hard to process. And worst of all, time doesn't stop to wait for you to process it! Just when you feel comfortable writing '22' in your dates, you have to switch it up again. Here in Forest, though, we have a bit of a tradition to mark the end of each year, and hopefully give everyone a chance to reflect back on it for at least a moment before diving into the next one. Whether you've participated for all the iterations, or this is your first time, we invite you to join in: it's time for the eighth annual Photo Contest!

Here's what you need to know:

🌲 We have four categories once again this year:

  • LinkTrees (this category is permanent each year)

  • LinkMotion (photos portraying movement, action, and dynamicity)

  • LinkSunrise/Sunset (for all your dawns and dusks)

  • LinkHumans in Nature (photos presenting human signs or objects set within the vastness of nature: how human presence is subsumed by, blends into, or imitates into the natural world)

🌲 You may submit up to 12 photos total. You may choose how to divide those among the different categories, but please do not submit more than 12.

🌲 Please post your photos in the appropriate thread on our forums, located Linkhere. You may also submit photos via a link to an image hosting site in a telegram to Mount Seymour.

🌲 The photos must be taken by you, but can be taken at any time (not just during the contest).

🌲 Anyone in Forest or in a region which has an embassy with Forest may submit photographs for the contest.

🌲 Timing:

  • Submissions will be open from December 1 at 09:00 GMT (4:00am Dec 1 EST) to December 23rd December 31st at 23:59 GMT.

  • Voting will begin on December 24th January 1st at 23:59 GMT and end December 31st January 6th at 23:59 GMT.

🌲 Voting will take place on a Google Form. Needless to say, please no puppeteering!

All nations that are residing in a URA region are eligible to run and vote in the elections as long as you have a WA nation somewhere in NS. Discord though is required for all positions. To declare your intent to run for a position please post it in the campaign-central channel in URA discord. It's advised you write up a platform dispatch so that voters can see what your plans are and experience. Once you have that completed it can be posted in campaign manifestos. The declaration period will run till September 18th US EST. Let the election season kick off as the URA is looking for you to help us grow and expand!
