I'm just inclined not to pick a president who was great purely by the circumstances of history. I'm sure he would have been a great leader even if he didn't have to deal with the whole Revolutionary war stuff, but I wouldn't call him the best. He was just too apathetic for the attention that the job of President requires. Reagan was more balanced between overly ambitious and apathetic. Even if he had more integrity than most modern politicians, that doesn't alone make him a better President. Integrity doesn't matter when you aren't all that active to begin with. If only we could get a president who combined integrity with activity (more often that is, some are better than others ofc). |
