The last couple of times I've spent a bit of time in a bank, I have seen an elderly person walk in, without a mask (when masks were mandated), and ignore all of the established rules, walking up to a bank employee even if they were busy and demanding to be seen immediately. The elderly persons both presented themselves with a mixture of entitlement, resentment, and diminished capacity. This is a very random sample and I can't make too much out of it, but I did notice it.

I work in a bank. Apparently people don't really understand the basic fundamentals of banking or the extentions what we do. We can act as notaries when needed, but people presume our capabilities are that of the post office. So going back to the 80 year old he gave me an envelope with no address and no stamp and told me to mail it. My senior told him we don't send out mail then he threw his papers at me. A few weeks ago a woman caused a commotion that she couldn't use our copier for stuff not related to banking and immediately canceled banking with us. So I just wanna are people in other countries this empty headed or is just mine? Because if it's just mine I might seek residence elsewhere.

I live in the States and lived in 4 different ones. They all have unique aspects about them manners wise. I currently work in a hospital and can say without a doubt we are screwed. Half the patients don’t believe in Covid so won’t wear a mask (I work in the Covid unit) and when I ask them to wear one it’s always something about their “freedumbs”. I feel your frustrations.

I live in the Canary Islands and don’t recognise this behaviour. People are generally respectful and don’t have the sense of entitlement you speak of. That’s a generalisation and maybe up in peninsular, European Spain things are different, but I don’t think so. Family is important and older people have a secure place in it. During the pandemic, people obeyed the rules. Masks are still mandatory on public transportation and in some other indoor situations.

You'd be surprised how certain places in the United States people lack giving the other respect. Some are so barbaric you'd be upset if they contributed to the gene pool.

Manners are regionally dependent. In the US, the Southerners tend to be more polite. Some places in Asia are very polite. Europe and Africa seem to produce very rude people at times. I have only visited Ecuador in South America, so I cannot draw conclusions about manners in that part of the world. The same for Australia, since I have only been to Perth, Fremantle, and up the coast of Western Australia. In the Middle East, the Omani people were nice. Overall, I enjoyed Asia the most.

True. I live in Chicago, a metropolitan are with an overall populace that ranges between 3 million to 5 million. For a major city between New York and Los Angeles education is badly underfunded and mannerisms and etiquette are out the window. When I was in Portland, a city of less than 500,000 the culture was very polite, manner oriented, and cussing was virtually nowhere to be heard as well they were proud of being a well-read populace.

I don't know that gross generalizations about people in a country or a region of a country are particularly accurate or useful. Trumps election in 2016 certainly emboldened some people who act with belligerence, ignorance, and hate, though not everyone who voted for Trump acts this way. Unfortunately, the US is not the only country currently dealing with this sort of thing.

Florida took a turn for the worst. Trump has retired to his golfing resort, Maralago. His supporter governor never listened to CDC protocols when COVID hit. He's notorious for abusing his position of power. He got a scientist arrested at gunpoint in front of her family because she refused to manipulate statistics. He's threatened teachers and schools with either halting salaries or defending if they follow COVID guidelines, including wearing a mask. He's one of the govenors in the South to ban books that teach Critical Race Theory, even removing math textbooks that he believes 'implies' it. He passed legislation a few months ago known as the "Don't Say Gay," bill that can allow any parent to petition to remove any teacher that is believed to talk about subjects around LGBTQ culture. His attack on teachers is so bad there is a major exodus of them leaving the profession or the state altogether with roughly 500 positions vacant.

The South and rural Midwest lack politeness too. When I worked in a casino we had southern that refused to mask up as well be preachy about Trump coming back to office. There is currently a resurgence to push to ban books that teach Critical Race Theory. Tenessee banned the graphic novel Maus. The South mostly buys in to Tucker Carlsons "White Replacement Theory."

Of course generalisations are ridiculous, but at the moment I’m beyond being nicey-nicey about voters for Boris Johnson, Victor Orbán or anyone who channels Donald Trump. Not everyone in England (and I mean England) was for Brexit, and every Texan isn’t a gun nut. I know that.
