The Tokugawa shogunate was significant because it provided peace and unity to Japan for over 250 years. In addition, it helped to provide economic stability to the empire, partially because it was closed off from most outsiders. The isolation helped Japan to grow its own economy, and not be influenced by the economic highs and lows of other empires.
Some things that weakened the empire were the abundance of foreigners in the empire, the defeat of the shogun’s armies, and the dynamo refusing the shogun’s orders. The problem with the foreigners was that the empire didn’t want them there, but there were too many to expel with force. The shogunal armies were sent to control Chōshū, but were defeated leading to more loss of power and prestige. The shogun tried to mobilize a large force in an attempt to crush Chōshū, but the daimyo of Hiroshima, the domain that was to be the area of the invasion, openly defied the shogun and refused to contribute troops.
The overall impact of the fall of the empire was that it led to the Meiji era in Japan. The Meiji era brought in the formation of a national army/navy and the adoption of universal education. Additionally, the Meiji era led to the addition of railroad tracks and telegraph lines through Japan, helping to further connect the empire.
