PRIDE MONTH IN TCB Pride is a month that means so many different things to so many different people. In this special feature, members of the Bloc share what Pride means to them. Happy Pride Month, TCB! The Bloc has an incredibly high population of LGBT members, and there is so much love and support in both the wider LGBT community and in the Bloc's own corner of it. I am very, very grateful for both. Whether you're closeted or out, questioning or certain, or able or unable to celebrate, I see you, and I am so glad I share this wonderful community with you. Keep loving and keep fighting. -iota / New Astri, Butch lesbian, He/She/They happy pride month for all the lgbtq+ people in the communist bloc! as someone who is gay, pride month for me is about accepting my sexuality and finding communities where i can relate to other people. i am not in the safest environment to come out to several people, including my family and my sexuality has been weaponized by people who found out about my sexuality. i'm most certainly not the only one who isn't in a very lgbtq-friendly environment & finding others that i can relate to and communicate with is important to me. happy pride month! - adri / Ataral, he/they What Pride Month means to me is that we have a long way to go. Pride Month means that 11 months of the year we suffer for our identity and in June we celebrate it. Pride Month means that LGBTQIA2S+ people are not reminded of their worth year-round and so need to remind themselves. Pride Month means that we still need to "come out" to our loved ones. I long for the day when we can bring any partner(s) home and it does not need to be a conversation we sit down and have. Where we just walk in and say this is who I'm with and start supper. Pride Month means a history of oppression. From the outside to be sure, but also from within. Pride Month means that a movement, (pioneered largely by Transgender people, Women, and People of Colour) has been co-opted from riots against authority to peaceful parades with police escorts. Pride Month means we have a lot of work to do. - DR. A. T. Ariyaratne / Sarvodaya shramadana, Black Male, He/They TCBook Review - Ned Stark deserved to die The death of beloved character Ned Stark from the hit book series "A Song of Ice and Fire" is often debated amongst fans. In this article, our very own Sarvodaya shramadana will argue that Ned's execution was not only expected - it was morally correct By: Dr. A. T. Ariyaratne (Sarvodaya shramadana) 10 June, 2022 Ned Stark Deserved to Die. Warned Cersei Sansa Lannister "I Did Warn You Not To Trust Me" Backstabber Let the Mighty Tremble! - Annotated excerpts from "The Principles of Communism" by Friedrich Engels, Part 4 Welcome back friends, and comrades, to our guided reading of Friedrich Engels’ Principles of Communism. Today we’ll be having a look at questions five, which talks about how the price of labour is determined. Like last week, I’ll put sections of Engels’ writing and then commentary following each one. Question 5: Under what conditions does this sale of the labour of the proletarians to the bourgeoisie take place? Answer: Labour is a commodity like any other and its price is therefore determined by exactly the same laws that apply to other commodities. In a regime of large-scale industry or free competition – as we shall see, the two come to the same thing – the price of a commodity is on average always equal to the costs of production. Capitalism as an economic system is marked by the existence of commodities. That is, things that have a value not only through their use (the use-value), but also have value through their ability to be exchanged for other commodities (an exchange value). For example, in a given market, a coat has a use value, you can wear it to stay warm, and an exchange value, you can swap it for certain quantities of coffee beans, loaves of bread or a pair of shoes. To dramatically simplify elements of Das Kapital, money is a special form of commodity that only has exchange value – it is only used to facilitate the exchange of one commodity for another. Engels here is writing that labour (labour-power is a more technically accurate Marxist term) is a commodity like any other and is therefore bought and sold on the market. Labour is purchased with wages and the purchase of labour takes place on what we know as the “labour market”. Back to Engels… Hence the price of labour is also equal to the costs of production of labour. But the costs of production consist of precisely the quantity of means of subsistence necessary to keep the worker fit for work and prevent the working class from dying out. The worker will therefore get no more for his labour than is necessary for this purpose; the price of labour or the wage will therefore be the lowest, the minimum, required for the maintenance of life Note that this minimum cost looks very different in different parts of the world. In the Global North (Western Europe, USA, Australia, Japan), labour costs are higher and include the costs of things like health insurance and social safety nets. In the Global South, where these structures are less developed, the minimum cost of labour really remains limited to the food, clothing and housing required to keep workers working. This plays an important role in explaining why food price crises (like the one the world is experiencing now) have incredibly damaging effects on working class of the Global South. To let Engels finish… However since business is sometimes worse and sometimes better, the worker receives sometimes more and sometimes less just as the factory owner sometimes gets more and sometimes less for his commodities. But just as the factory owner, on the average of good times and bad, gets no more and no less for his commodities than their costs of production, so the worker will, on the average get no more and no less than this minimum. This economic law of wages the more strictly the greater the degree to which large-scale industry has taken possession of all branches of production. Whilst in a theoretically competitive market economy, prices of goods do tend towards the cost of production (with important implications for the rate of profit), imperialist economic relationships today often mean commodities are sold at a price that is far greater than their money cost of production. One example of this is the iPad, which had a market price in 2010-11 of $499 and a factory price of $275. Wage costs of production however, only amounted to $45. Interested readers may find this article on the matter interesting. That’s all for this week folks! Let me know what you think on the RMB or via telegram. See you next week when we have a look at Engels’ writings on the history of working classes! Tales from Afar - Blocvision 2084, Part 2 Originally BlocVision was to be held in Freiheitsstadt, Liberza but due to a terrorist attack which killed several people it was canceled and moved. Proletarska then took in BlocVision, preparing Cestin to host it while other nations prepared for their performances. The nations of Soviet Kem, Eleutherya, Phinxia, Goshnia and Goshnigovina, UFROE, Pan kath, as well as The king isle all joined BlocVision. Their representatives flew to Cestin with all of it paid for by Proletarska. 1 million Euros was sent to each nation to pay for the transportation and their stay during BlocVision. As performances were about to be underway, 3 men broke into an apartment and took two officials hostage. After 42 hours of tense negotiations two of the men were killed and the last was injured, while the two officials escaped without injuries. With the situation in control officials began BlocVision. A total attendance of over 350 million people watched at least one of the songs, with over 1.2 billion votes having been submitted. As nations continued on, BlocVision was extended to 5 days as contestants flocked to Cestin. With a winner yet be to announced, over 160 contestants had sung their songs. Live voting was held over 3 days, as the songs continued being narrowed down. The 4 songs left were Bro Hugs, Where Home is, Communism, and Poison. As the votes continued on the song Where Home is gained over 75% of votes, which totalled to 998,076,253 popular votes. The song also gained all of the votes of the judges and became the winning song of BlocVision 2084. Unfortunately the songs from the contestants of Pan kath, Phinxia, The king isle, Liberza and Eleutherya did not make it to the final voting phase, yet their submissions were quite popular and well liked. The home contestants of Proletarska became the first Proletarskan contestants to win BlocVision, and the first do so while Proletarska hosted BlocVision. In second place came the song Poison by Goshnia and Goshnigovina's contestants while Bro Hugs, from UFROE, and Communism, from Soviet Kem, tied for 3rd place. Ceremonies were held, awards were given out, and people celebrated the successful event. All competitors departed Cestin for their home nations as commemorations continued across Proletarska. BlocVision 2085, was to be planned soon and was expected to be even more popular and successful than BlocVision 2084 as several other nations expressed interest in participating. Meanwhile, nations continued to fight the Black Foot terrorists across the globe.
