Hello guys, only 3 days away from your (probably) first conference: so, some quick tips for you:
1.) bring a comfy change of clothes (you don't want to be sitting in a suit for 2 hours more than you need to)
2.) bring some sort of entertainment (unless you're going to nap, but still recommended - I personally prefer earbuds)
3.) bring money (vending machines/in-n-out)
4.) find a friend to sit next to
5.) prepare EVERYTHING the night before (trust me, morning rushes suck)
6.) on the way up, try reading over your speech again or mentally prepare: you're going to be in a committee with only 2 other people you know, so be ready to make friends :)
7.) during other's speeches, find things that stick out to you, line up with your plan or ideas, or things you disagree with (easiest way to earn points by making comments) - pretty much create a quick, mental 1 sentence summary (or bring a legal pad)

MUN veteran's tips (aka Ayden Alvarez)
1.) Bring a charger. You REALLY don't need your laptop or phone dying in the middle of the conference (trust me, I have experience)
2.) You can use notecards to help when you present your speech, so I recommend doing that just in case. Still don't forget to memorize though
3.) Pay attention to other delegates. They may seem boring at times (sometimes they are), but it will help out a lot with resolution groups
4.) Don't be afraid to ask questions, especially to other delegates. Learning helps you improve as you go along, plus it makes you look smarter for the chairpeople
5.) Taking notes on other's speeches/resolutions has helped me a lot; I think it will help you guys out a lot too, so a notebook and pencil is something to consider bringing
6.) Do your best. Don't be the one kid who's playing CoD in the back the entire time (this has canonically happened)
7.) The chairpeople aren't robots; try talking to them!
8.) Have fun! It is an ELECTIVE, after all. Good luck to you all!

anyways, good luck this Saturday, and may the chair smile highly upon you!

ok hi guys guess who the "seasoned veteran" Mr. Iverson said would also be giving advice? anyways, i obviously also have some advice for the conference too!

PREP & MORE INFORMAL ADVICE

I. bring a portable charger for sure (if you have one), and make sure all your devices are fully charged before the conference. (btw i'll bring an extra charger or two so lmk if you need one there)

II. get lots of sleep the night before! conferences can sometimes be pretty draining and get boring, and you definitely won't be able to perform well if you only got 3 hours of sleep the night before (even if you chug coffee and energy drinks before)

III. bring your own snacks for before we actually get to our committee rooms. it can be something small like some granola bars or some other light snack that you can eat for breakfast. since we leave so early, most people don't eat breakfast or because of how early they eat it, they get hungry during debate. there was a kid in my committee and his stomach grumbled super loud when we were all quiet because we were voting for a motion. (i'll also bring some extra granola bars and possibly some other snacks for anyone who wants/needs it so just come up to me before we leave, before opening ceremonies, or at our first break!)

IV. PLEASE wear and bring deodorant!!! i know this seems obvious, but WBA makes you sweat very easily, even if it isn't that hot. you don't want to be the delegate no one talks to because they stink (trust me, this happened, even my chairs had pit stains even though they were only in dress shirts and it was NOVEMBER). bring some perfume/cologne too, if you want (not glass bottles though, obviously. js bring something from bath and body works)

V. BRUSH YOUR TEETH AND USE MOUTHWASH!!! same thing with the last piece of advice, you don't want to be the delegate no one talks to because they stink! bring gum or some mints if you have to! personally, i prefer mints. (gum makes you stumble over words)

VI. bring a change of shoes if you're wearing dress shoes (especially if they don't fit you too well). it'll suck when everyone is running to the bus after we eat at in-n-out, or even when we're leaving the school and you're behind everyone because you're limping

VII. don't wear too much jewelry. it'll look too informal, and no one really cares if you have five chains on, or if you have 15 gold bangles (unless they're clinking together and disrupting debate, but that's obviously bad).

ACTUAL DEBATE ADVICE

I. try to do a little extra research beforehand on the other countries in committee. just write some simple notes or even a mental one of which countries are automatically for the issue the committee is trying to solve, who's allies with who, current state, etc. very helpful when it comes to unmods and collaborating on resolutions!

II. definitely bring something to take notes on! it can be a legal pad, sticky/post-it notes, or even just a notebook! take notes during other delegates' speeches or comments (things like their country's stance on the topic, their plan, how they respond to another delegate's plan, etc.) this will help you keep track of lots of things!

III. try to raise your placard after every speech! Even if you don't have a comment ready, you can motion for an umod/mod and influence the chairs. it'll show that you're active and eager to participate in debate and eager to collaborate with other delagates.

IV. invite other delegates to join your conversation or involve yourself in others during unmods. don't be shy, you won't achieve anything by not acting

V. ask the chair(s) for feedback before/after breaks. it'll obviously let you know what you're doing right and what needs improving, but also influences the chairs (makes them think you're highly dedicated with improving your actions in order to solve the issue more effectively)

VI. get on the speakers list everytime you can! again, gets you points and even if you don't, it'll show the chairs you're eager to participate

VII. present every time you can. just keep trying to stand up and talk

anyways, that's it guys! i really hope this helps you guys and lmk if you have any other questions that i could help you with! good luck, and i hope you all are confident and sure of yourselves!
