The Reaper of Lord Dominator

Afraid our regional RP being hosted by Middle Barael has gone a bit... er, well, dead really. That said I'd absolutely be willing to consider (should I have to time) joining another RP if any Forestians wanna host one or something. ;p

And of course I'll gladly pick up where the Occupy Ecocon one left off if nobody's sick of me there yet.

Ah, I’m fine without rp, just wanted to try and “return” once more

I propose a RP where everyone plays the role of a different small, woodland creature, and the party is on a pilgrimage through the deep forest to seek the aid of the Great King of the Wood in restoring balance to their world back home. Challenges would include things like fording small streams without falling in and getting your bottom wet, foraging for berries that won't upset your stomach, and overcoming preconceived notions about your fellow sentient beings with whom you are sharing this journey.

That sounds adorable, but not necessarily something I have time to participate in.

Not quite the same thing but may I recommend Babes in the Wood1 if you’re looking for a similar sounding ttrpg?

The Realm of Lofia

I'm writing an "original" (it's hard to be original nowadays) hard sci-fi (realistic) short story seeking some inspiration. Creativity is key.

Focus: A small region's (not in an NS sense) geopolitics, specifically regional change
Subthemes: May include artificial intelligence, decreasing population, spirituality and patriotism, education, healthcare, urban planning, and sustainability
Characters: The regional government, the national military, the local citizens, and the insurgents
Background: TBD
Plot: TBD
Time: 2020–present
Location: A country's region on another distant habitable planet with scarce resources in our universe
Logic: Same as our reality

Do we have any IC stories in Forest? I will be crediting the authors if they inspire me.

That so closely resembles my description, I'm really quite shocked...

I consume vast quantities of ttrpg podcasts and other forms of actual-plays, though sadly have only had a couple of opportunities to get together with a group to play. Haven't encountered "Babes in the Wood" yet, though. I've bought a couple of other game books, just based on the creativity of the system and/or theme, and I will likely be picking this up, as well. Thanks for the pointer. I was channeling "Mouse Guard," if you happen to be familiar, with a good dose of "Redwall" mixed in :)

I don't really have any ideas for you, though I have enjoyed many hard sci fi books in the past and would be interested to see what you come up with. Mostly I just wanted to say that I think it could be fun and helpful if you had a different person answer each one of those categories you listed out ("Focus," "Plot," etc), and then went about trying your best to write a story within those parameters. It would be a bit like those exercises that improvisers run, where they call out to the crowd for, say, the name of a city, then an everyday object, etc, and at the end create a scene around it all. It's meant to be good practice, at the very least.

Welcome back! Unfortunately, I don't have a lot to say about it except for the current GA voting on "Limiting Animal Pathogens" and that Domination industrial enterprises is back. Does our region take place on another planet in our universe or in a different universe? Also, for the Oceanic Map, the latitudes are messed up as there are two 15 degrees North. I noted this on our Discord server. I'm interested in storing the map data on ArcGIS Pro once I'm finished with my semester.

Lofia wrote:Does our region take place on another planet in our universe or in a different universe?

Forest takes place on the internet, as part of a game, and represents a place to gather for people with real-world interest in environmental matters regardless of their in-game status. Our region is not in-character, and we have no established lore of that sort. The maps started (more than a decade ago) as a fun visual way to represent who had been here longest (west to east) and how influential they were (size on the map). It has moved away from that, obviously, but the maps are for fun and for use in personal RP, rather than representing any particular world-building. The shapes of continents changes regularly to reflect the will of the mapper, people coming and going, and other such practical concerns.

Just saw what you meant with the two 15N's on the oceanic - disregard that half of what I wrote.

The Empire of Herya

Hey there friends!

Portugal has the pleasure to present its new competition, the Lusitanian Games, which we developed with the help of the delegacies from Forest, 100000 islands and Europe, with judges from every one of these.

You will be able to compete in writing, photography and flag design. If you think you have the best submission possible and an incredible creative mind, than read the rules and submit your best work!

Is the camera rolling? Let's do this then!

Welcome to the First Edition of the Lusitanian Games (or Lusitaníadas in our oh so tongue-twisting Portuguese). In a never-seen-before attempt, Portugal, Europe, Forest and 10000 Islands came together to offer a fun and engaging time for all the NationStates multiverse: a cultural competition! Consisting of three seperate competitions - Writing, Photography and Flag Design - we hope these games may bring forth some peaceful banter and aid in the strengthening of bonds during such turbulent times. Without further ado, let the games begin!

How can I participate?

Regardless of your region, status in the WA, heck as long as you have a pulse you may join any of the three competitions we have in store for you!
But first, please read the rules below (click the images) and, when your project is finished, send it in the appropriate medium via telegram to each competition's judges.

Tournaments

The nations who wish to join must write a story regarding either an event or a simple story set within their NS countries. This part of the competition will be divided in two seperate sections: one for English-written stories.

Regarding the texts themselves, these must be written out in a dispatch in the respective language of the competition the writer wishes to join (they can submit up to 1 in each). All text formats are allowed (poetry, prose...) and there is no word limit. Plagiarism and hate speech will not be tolerated in a submission (though hateful topics may be explored in the narrative).

    In the English competition a jury composed of players from different regions will give out four different thematic awards to the best texts: best scenery, best story progression, best character development and best plot;

As for the Portuguese one, a poll will be conducted in Portugal for its citizens to choose the best text out of the bunch.

Once finished, submissions must be sent via telegram in a dispatch to:

    • All the judges, for the English competition

    • Our Minister Alentejo and Algarve, for the Portuguese competition.

    Nordustra

Jutsa wrote:9/10. My actual favorite. xD But the only reason I'm scoring it lower is because, though it uses only two colours absolutely beautifully, I'd argue it's probably slightly too detailed. Nonetheless, an absolutely beautiful flag.

Pilipinas and Malaya wrote:8/10. This flag is amazing, I love how it uses the contrast between white and black to its advantage. The only setback it has is its details, they're too much and would be too indistinguishable from afar.

    Ankuran

Jutsa wrote:8/10. It's a truly beautiful and unique flag - no doubt about that! It displays a solid and unique emblem and has good colours. My main qualms with it are a) complexity (again lol) and b) the amount of light-on-light colouration makes it lack contrast and a little murky (if you imagine it from a distance). Still, it's very unique and pleasant, overall, and it genuinely pains me to put it so relatively low on this list.

Pilipinas and Malaya wrote:7/10. Fairly great design, heavily dislike the colour choices. It blends together too much.

    Ecologist Hegemony

Jutsa wrote:10/10. Arguably it's not even my personal favorite (I love Nordustra's), but it ticks all the marks for good flag design: simple, straightforward imagery, relatively unique; it's just a really solid flag tbh.

Pilipinas and Malaya wrote:6/10. It's alright, I suppose. The eye and the recycling symbol being two different shades of green makes me feel a little unsettled.

Quick follow-up: you can compete in all 3 events unless you are one of the judges of that event, obviously, and in the writing competition you can participate in the english-writing, that will be judged, but you can at the same time compete in the simultaneous portuguese writing, which will have a winner determined via poll in Portugal.

I and a few other people do incorporate the map into their own lore to different degrees. I do a lot. Which does bring up some interesting but irrelevant questions to the table. Like, does Jerusalem exist in the Forest universe? Does Kim Il-sung exist in it? Because at least according to MSR's version of the shared lore, they both probably do.

I guess I'm trying to say it's sort of a one-way street? The regional map influences some nations' worldbuilding, but their worldbuilding doesn't influence the map back

As for my take on the Forest’s “lore” it exists somewhere on another planet close to earth since earth issues and nations could be linked in Forestian lores as well. Basically in my own story which I haven’t worked on yet my ancestors came from the earth long time ago, related to my relocation from Europe last year. But most likely I’ll review that and change the whole story completely

It wouldn't be the first time the possibility of aliens/other planets in the same universe as Forest is brought up. I personally like the version of Forest where different fantasy things coexist. Jutsa is inhabited by reptilian-ish alien CEOs, Chan island is inhabited by militaristic undead pirates, Gorthias is inhabited by Gen 4 MLP characters and Garbelia is inhabited by... Otters? People? Otter people?

(I say all that but MSR itself at most has some speculative zoology in it lol.)

Yup yup! I have very intense RP content and extensive mapping based entirely off the Forest map, including an entire region (The Region of Verdant Haven) and the twelve puppets there. All the history, geography, and national factbook data on this account is built on it as well.

Like you say, it's a one way street. None of it is in, or influences, the Forest map. It's all just personal preference! There is no "The Forest Universe" - there are however many Forest Universes as we have nations, each one having no relevance the others :-D

The Puloanyar:Home to several archipelagos and a diversity of societies and cultures, as well as a number of plants and animals completely extinct elsewhere.

West Pangamotu:The bigger continent in Oceanic Forest, largely covered by tropical rainforest. It is separated from East Pangamotu by the largest sea in the entire region, the Kakamotu sea.

East Pangamotu:A continent of varied climates, flora and fauna, going from moist jungles to cloud forests to arid deserts.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I get on the map?

Well, it's not very complicated, the only requirement is your nation must have been in Forest for at least 15 days. If you fit the requirement, just telegram me, Jutsa or some other member of the soon-to-be-formed cartographer team! It does help a lot if you have a picture of your map, even if it's just a doodle on a napkin, but you don't need an image or even a defined shape (I can make one for you if you want). There is, however, an application that you should fill out in your telegram:

Nation Name: Especially relevant if you want your name on the map to be different from your username
Location: In which part of which map. Ex: "north of X nation", "southeast of the Oceanic Map", etc...
Size and Shape:This is where an image would come in handy, even if it's just a sketch. Note, however, that I might lightly alter the coastline of your nation to better fit the map's artstyle.
Cities and Notable Features:Particularly: Where is the capital? It's also relevant to inform things like where the mountains are, how many (if any) are there, what the bodies of water are, where are non-capital big cities located, etc...

Can I change my nation once it's on the map?

Yep! Let me know what changes you want, and they will be added in the next map update, unless they affect other nations too, in which case you should check with them first.

How can I join the cartographer team?

Right now, you can't, but soon it will be possible. If you're interested in joining, the only real requirement is to either know how to use Inkscape, Adobe Illustrator or some other vector art app or be willing to learn how to use it. That and liking maps, I suppose. If you fit those requirements, let me know and you'll (probably) be added to the team soon.

This month, we have many new nations, and it is time to greet them all!

Continental Forest:
Yrivui, The forest of aeneas, Prusmia and Columbiqash have been added to the map, everyone welcome them!

Theofficaljapan has also been added, which answers the long standing question "does japan canonically exist in the Forestverse?" The answer is yes, and it's to the north of Chan Island.

And finally, Zerphen has been added, alongside The Democratic Republic of the Empire. I'd like to point out that TDRotE is Forest's first enclave, which I think is noteworthy, congratulations! (and apologies to both of you for not responding to your telegrams.)

Oceanic Forest:
The issue with the longitudinal lines has been fixed. Thaaat's it

And a smaller mini-update will be coming up in the next few hours or days, because I didn't contact Velichye in time to get the details of their map, and also because Yrivui's map needs some small adjustments. If anyone can locate any mistakes I missed, let me know and I'll fix those in the mini-update

The Democratic Republic of The Democratic Republic of the Empire

I am the smallest nation on the map, the nation with the longest name on the map, and the only enclave on the map.

Me special. Feel good.

I just checked and turns out you're right. I thought Difin-per ubelk (from the oceanic map) was smaller, but it is just a little bit larger by area. Congratulations on beating two records at once

The Democratic Republic of The Democratic Republic of the Empire

I am a menace.
