The Kingdom of Daerne is a titanic, safe nation, renowned for its barren, inhospitable landscape, frequent executions, and ban on automobiles. The hard-nosed, cynical, devout population of 10.187 billion Daerneans are ruled with an iron fist by the dictatorship government, which ensures that no-one outside the party gets too rich. In their personal lives, however, citizens are relatively unoppressed; it remains to be seen whether this is because the government genuinely cares about its people, or if it hasn't gotten around to stamping out civil rights yet.

The large, socially-minded government juggles the competing demands of Law & Order, Defense, and Education. The average income tax rate is 39.9%, but much higher for the wealthy.

The large but sluggish Daernean economy, worth 220 trillion Orens a year, is quite specialized and dominated by the Trout Farming industry, with significant contributions from Soda Sales, Arms Manufacturing, and Book Publishing. Black market activity is frequent. State-owned companies are common. Average income is 21,673 Orens, and distributed extremely evenly, with little difference between the richest and poorest citizens.

Sneezing pedestrians are grabbed by alley-lurking doctors, appendix transplant figures have recently doubled, all the playground's a stage for Daernean schoolchildren, and an inkwell of goats' blood is supplied on school desks across the nation. Crime is totally unknown, thanks to a well-funded police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Daerne's national animal is the Hawk, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to toxic air pollution.

Daerne is ranked 179,486^th in the world and 12^th in Alvion for Largest Publishing Industry, scoring 994.22 on the Bella Potter Productivity e-Index.
