Complex question. If we look at our ancestors, we are all the descendants of "criminals". Civilization is built on murder (war) and taking resources from competitors at the collective level (stealing). People never say the Founding Fathers of the US needed to be "rehabilitated", nor Roman emperors or Japanese shoguns. I think the problem with even asking such a question is the total lack of self awareness and external perspective that precedes it. There's also the problem of context: who did what, how and why? Our ancestors were harsh competitors and we are here today as a result of their self interested aggression. Seems rather arrogant to stigmatize and discard essentially a massive chunk of the spectrum of human behavior because we now have a level of comfort that the same "criminality" bequeathed us. If rehabilitation is possible, and the criminal is not crazy, then yes, theoretically. In fact, it all depends on how the rehabilitation system is built, and whether it works at all. In my real country, the system is supposedly aimed at rehabilitation, but for some reason there is no rehabilitation. Probably because no special rehabilitation measures are carried out. Many criminals just sit in prisons and then come out. Some of them don't even break the law anymore, but apparently not because they were re-educated by the system, but because they don't want to go back to prison - our prisons are a rather unpleasant place. However, in a sense, this is also re-education. |
