Facts About Beavers:

1. Beavers are semiaquatic rodents.Thst means they spend their times both on land and in water.

2. Beavers are native to the temperate habitats of the Northern Hemisphere.

3. Beavers weigh between 35 to 65 lbs or 16 to 30 kg. According to reports, the heaviest beaver ever recorded was 110 lbs or 50 kg. The beaver’s length is usually from 3 to 4 ft long (1 to 1.2 meters) and 1 to 1.5 ft when standing up.

4. The beaver’s most notable feature is its large flat tail. Its tail can serve as a rudder when swimming and it also assists them when sitting or standing upright. Moreover, beavers may strike their tail on the surface of the water if it senses danger which can also serve as a warning to their fellow animals, or sometimes just for fun.

5. Canadians selected the beaver as their national symbol, not because of its similarity to this ecological engineer, but mainly because of its fur. The fur trade has helped Canada become what it is today. Beavers’ fur was highly coveted as hats and winter coats.

6. Beavers can hold their breath for about 15 minutes underwater. They also have transparent eyelids that serve as their goggles, helping them navigate the water effortlessly. Beavers have adapted so many things as semi-aquatic mammals that their eyes and nose valves would shut to keep water out when they swim.

7. Beavers are very active at night and would be very busy for about 12 hours building and maintaining their territory. Despite their less-developed eyesight, they have keen senses of smell and hearing that would help them carry out their nightly activities.

8. Beavers have orange teeth. A beaver’s teeth get this color from an iron-rich protective coating of enamel that helps prevent tooth decay. Enamel is a thin outer covering of the tooth but unlike human teeth, with which enamel contains magnesium, beaver enamel on the other hand contains iron which helps strengthen it.

9. Giant beavers of the Ice Age, known as Castoroides looked exactly the same as their modern relative but so much bigger. These bear-sized beavers lived in North America during Ice Age and weighed about 90 kg (198 lb) to 125 kg (276 lb). Their fossils were first found in 1937 in a peat bog in Ohio.

10. Beavers rarely take part on the big screen, but there is one movie that surprisingly provided beaver characters a huge impact. In The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, Mr. and Mrs. Beaver were beavers who helped the Pevensie children in their adventure to save Narnia from the curse of the White Witch.

11. Baby beavers are called kits. They are born highly developed physically. They can open their eyes immediately and are already covered with fur. Surprisingly, these kits can swim right after they are born, but as time goes by, they would need guidance from adults to learn how to do other things, like foraging for food inland or in the water. Kits live with their family and siblings for years before leaving to start their own family.

12. Beavers are often called ecological engineers. They are one of the few animals that can manipulate their surroundings to create a suitable habitat but that isn’t the only reason why they are considered ecological engineers —the dams they build create wetlands which are essential habitats for thousands of species. Beavers are considered keystone species, in other words, they are critical for the health of the environment.

13. Beavers do not hibernate, so they need to store food as much as possible in order to survive the long nights of the chilling cold. During winter, food is scarce and the snow makes it harder for beavers to move outside, so every fall, the members of the colony start to store food. In relation to this, building dams and preparing for winter is where the idiom “busy as a beaver” comes from.

14. Beavers form monogamous pairs and usually live in family groups of up to 8 related individuals called colonies. The younger siblings stay with their parents for up to 2 years, helping with infant care, food collection, and dam building.

15. Beavers are generally beneficial to the environment. They are instrumental in creating habitats for many aquatic organisms, maintaining the water table at an appropriate level and controlling flooding and erosion, all by building dams.

16. Beavers eat bark and cambium (the softer growing tissue under the bark of trees). Their favorites include willow, maple, poplar, beech, birch, alder, and aspen trees. They also eat water vegetation as well as buds and roots. Cellulose, which usually cannot be digested by mammals, is a major component of their diet. Beavers have microorganisms in their cecum (a sac between the large and small intestine) TO digest this material.

17. There are 2 different species of beaver. The North American beaver which is commonly called the Canada beaver, and the European beaver which is commonly called the Eurasian beaver. While both the North American beaver and European beaver look very similar to each other and have many of the same behavioral characteristics, they are not genetically compatible.

18. The largest beaver dam in the world can be found in the Wood Buffalo National Park located in Alberta, Canada. Stretching for 850m, the dam is visible from space!

19. Beavers have parachuted from a plane. To protect the local beaver population from clashing with the residents of Idaho in 1948, the Idaho Department of Fish and Game used World War 2 parachutes to drop boxes of beavers from airplanes into nearby protected areas. The idea was devised by Elm Heter who worked for the Idaho Department of Fish and Game and it worked really well, as 75 out of 76 beavers survived the fall.

20. England's beavers have returned after four centuries. Until recently, the last mention of a beaver sighting in England came in 1789 when a bounty was paid for a beaver head in Yorkshire. By that point, the once-prolific beaver had dwindled due to over-hunting for their valuable pelts and medicinal glands. For a few hundred years, the species disappeared from Great Britain. In the 2010s, conservationists reintroduced a wild population of beavers to a river in Devon and observed how the animals took to their new environment. In 2020, beavers were given legal protection in the UK.

Welcome to the Regional Message Board (RMB) of The North Pacific. We want to ensure everyone has a positive experience, so please familiarise yourself with the following guidelines. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact the Lead Gameside Advocate, Lionsroar, or the Gameside Advocates, or ask on the RMB. And remember, the most important rule is to think before you post. You're interacting with other people, so let's keep it a respectful and pleasant environment.

The Regional Officers and Gameside Advocates have the authority to warn or suppress users who are found to be violating these guidelines. It is important to note, that even if a post does not explicitly infringe on the rules mentioned in this dispatch, it may still be considered a violation. You don't have to stress memorising every rule in this dispatch word for word. Common sense will get you pretty far!

The North Pacific community follows a set of guidelines put in place by the NationStates Moderators to maintain a respectful and safe online environment. Any user-generated content that violates these guidelines can, and will, be reported to the Site Moderation team. 2. Spam
Spam occurs and is abused in a wide variety of forms, so we reserve the right to suppress the following scenarios of a post. The most important rule to remember is "Don't spam!" Disregarding the examples listed, it is also a matter of interpretation by the ROs. With justification, other messages can be classified as spam and suppressed.

The general definition of spam is: "irrelevant or unsolicited messages", often with malicious intents and disruptive consequences to the RMB.

Long Posts
Long posts are spammy and too big for the RMB. It's especially annoying for Mobile Users. When writing long paragraphs, please use spoilers.

Short Posts
Also, remember to not only post one letter or word but also write these words out. Not everyone understands every abbreviation, and it's not helpful in a conversation.

3. ROs and GAs
Regional Officers and Gameside Advocates always have the last word. If they say to cut it out, then you will follow it. Regional Officers also reserve the right to suppress rule-breaking posts and even keep a ban possible.

4. Behave appropriately!
Use your common sense, you are interacting with other human beings! Keep it PG-13. Don't flame or harass.

5. Recruitment/Advertisement Rules
Any posts recruiting for other regions is strictly prohibited! Personal advertisement should be limited as much as possible, as it should not serve in a disruptive matter to the RMB. This includes the advertisement for upvotes, endorsements, events, polls, etc. If you want to advertise certain content on the RMB, talk to the current Lead Gameside Advocate for their approval.

6. RolePlay
One-liner or other low-effort RP is strictly prohibited. Instead, join one of our official RolePlay settings or provide a similar level of quality in your RP.

7. Additional
- Do not speak on behalf of the community unless it is your duty to do so.
- Do not quote rule-breaking posts. Instead, edit -snip- into the quote if necessary. The best way is to not interact and let the ROs and GAs deal with the matter.
- Please remove pings, when quoting another user's message. Also, limit your usage of pings. Excessive pinging and liking of other nations and their posts need approval.

Failure to adhere to these guidelines may result in the suppression of posts without warning. Just because some cases are not specified in the examples does not legitimize them. The RO always has the last word!
