Unjust Peace, Part II

Half the members of the House, nearly a third of sitting senators, a third of the governors and various other bureaucrats and elites perceived as disruptive were eliminated. The Vice-President was missing, the Speaker of the House was dead, the President Pro Tem of the Senate was in hiding. The Supreme Court Justices were missing, dead or in hiding also. The Chief Justice had been detained by the coup conspirators and was missing. The Mydic Ambassador was killed and the embassy sacked. Other Ambassadors of VA nations were whisked away with their families to hidden locations by members of the loyalist secret security details.

It was brutal, half the nation’s military bases were considered hostile or occupied, nearly half the major power generation facilities as well as a third of the missile silos. In Deseret a massive tank battle with infantry forces ensued as loyalist elements defended Fort Bradwell in Sierra Springs. Loyalist forces held the Fort and were able to destroy most of the enemy armor in the area. Elsewhere at Fort McMann in Keystone elements of loyalist ranger forces retreated into Cedar Expanse National Forest where they used guerilla tactics against rogue forces with great success. Fort McMann has been retaken.

The Fourth Fleet engaged rogue elements of the First and Second Fleet. The Third Fleet led by Admiral Lashonda Vance seized Berghoff the capital city of the State of Island which houses the largest naval base in Albany. Admiral Vance reaffirmed her loyalty to the Constitution and the government elected legitimately. Naval Base Richardson houses the Union’s only flying drone carrier which is likely the reason the Third Fleet under Admiral Vance seized the facility so as to not allow such a potent weapon to fall into the hands of the rogue forces.

Governor of Taysh, Allison Wilson stood defiantly on the steps of the state capital in Austin stating that the Republic would not fall to some wannabe military dictators. The youngest governor ever elected, at 24 continues to stand out for her strong defense of the nation and willingness to put herself in harm's way if need be to make a point. Rogue forces in Taysh were smashed as they advanced on the state capital of Austin and the state’s largest city of Montport. Already loyalist forces in Taysh are swiftly moving with their State Guard counterparts to shore up loyalist elements in the neighboring states of Pelonquin, Nayo and the Heartlands.

Governor Geoffrey McRearden of Nayo was briefly detained by rogue forces before being liberated by forces loyal to the central government. He’s pledged that if it weren’t for the loyalists he likely wouldn’t have seen the light of day again. Stories of similar near misses for high ranking officials continue to stream in.

Head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Andrew Ward mentioned that Albany would be capable of eliminating rogue elements effectively. Expressing concern though, Adm. Ward stated that this event would likely drastically shape the future of the Albanese armed forces and their perception in Albanese society. No longer supporters of the free and democratic government, the Admiral outlined the view that the Albanese military would never again achieve a level of political neutrality necessary to preserve public respect.

Already forces loyal to the central government have moved to retake the capital city of Columbia which has briefly been occupied by rogue forces. In New Haven two stray missiles shot by rogue elements battling loyalist forces struck high rise apartments. The event prompted the Mayor of New Haven to plead with forces from both sides to move the fighting away from the urban megalopolis to avoid shamefully killing civilians and other non-combatants. No injuries were reported in either missile strike incident thankfully.

Majassan military on high alert due to ongoing coup attempt in Union

Oxnvuri, 19 meskermo 2075 | Following a coup attempt in the Union of Albany, the Rabnovha, Majassa’s armed forces, have been put on high alert, Defence Magistrate Cevmi Astvngeirxe has confirmed.

“We have received intelligence that an illegitimate insurgency is currently ongoing against the elected goverment of President Martha Prescott”, the Magistrate said in an urgently called press conference. “Thankfully, the President herself has been brought to safety, but this cannot be said for several other officials. President Prescott has requested the World Society and the Commonwealth of Nations for assistance. While Majassa is not yet a full fledged member of the latter, we are a member of the former and for this reason, and with the approval of His Imperial Majesty the Holy Emperor, the Rabnovha has been put on standby for a possible intervention in the Union of Albany.”

The question is however whether or not the international community will be able to intervene. The Union is one of the most powerful nations on the planet, and even with a military insurrection going on, it will be difficult for foreign forces to enter the country without meeting tough resistance. By the same token, a destabilised Union will plunge the world in a situation of uncertainty that it has not seen recently.

Coup in Albany!
A coup by rogue elements of the Albanese armed forces across the entirety of the Union was perpetrated this morning. Rogue elements were able to carry out coordinated strikes nationwide, crippling the government’s ability to respond, seizing vital infrastructure and seizing the capital city. Vice-President Harris has been confirmed as missing while the Speaker of the House and various other high ranking officials have been publicly confirmed as killed. President Martha Prescott thankfully is leading the fight to restore the legitimate government from an undisclosed location.

Ambassador to the Union, Martine Poliades along with her family were confirmed killed. Their protective detail and many of the staff at the Embassy were killed when rogue forces posing as legitimate forces attempted to evacuate the Ambassador. A bomb was then detonated in the Embassy itself rendering the compound defunct. At this time it cannot be confirmed if there were any embassy staff survivors after the explosion and any effort to establish contact with Mydic expats in Albany has been rendered nearly impossible.

Request for Intervention and the Mydic Response
The Mydic Empire at the formal request by President Martha Prescott has accepted the responsibility of intervention citing stability and security of the world’s largest democracy and second largest economy was necessary to the stability of the global order. It was with this in mind that newly elected Archon Margot Xedes addressed the nation;

“With the ongoing security upheaval in Albany, it is the belief of the Mydic Empire that direct and swift intervention is necessary to prevent a long simmering and destabilizing conflict from taking root in our world. Whatever differences exist between the Empire and the Union are secondary to the stability of the world order. I am ordering with immediate haste, that the security forces the Empire has in the vicinity of the Egian Archipelago are to assemble and be underway to Albany within three days. The Empire will not back down from its responsibility to defend legitimate governments abroad.

The Empire calls on fellow World Society members as well as the members of the Commonwealth of Nations to join our intervention force at Egia and to depart together towards Albany within a few days as part of Operation Eagle Liberation. The Empire stands with the people of Albany in this trying time.”

The Mydic Empire was preparing to commit three carrier groups, a subsurface fleet and 75,000 ground troops consisting of support air wings, infantry, mechanized and armor elements as well as missile defense, electronic warfare and artillery elements as well. Together it would amount to the largest external deployment of Mydic forces since the Great War 50 years prior.

Stock Market Shock
The coup in Albany led the markets in Mydare sharply lower before the Federal Government of Archon Xedes suspended trading for the week in the first suspension of trade since 2040 when Albany launched a surprise attack against Mydic forces stationed in the Egian Archipelago and sparking the Egian War. The Government has pledged financial intervention should the economy continue to take a longer term blow from the unsettling of the world’s second largest economy.

19 Aylul, 2075, Al-Meria | During the Coup inside The Union of Albany, A border regiment entered into Deseret upon a request from the military commander at Fort Bradwell, Rousania had helped fend off the rogue armor unit attack there with very low casualties and helped to provide security to the state capital of Dorado while the loyalist forces continue to seek out and go after rogue elements.
Essentially asking if Rousania could provide security to an urban center so The Union's forces could be freed up to go attack the rebels rather than have to stay on the defensive to keep their civilians safe. Rousania complied and is now guarding the Center.
Rousania is currently sending supplies to the Union's Forces.

Unjust Peace, Part III

President Prescott had managed to hold onto the Republic by the thinnest of margins. Elements of every unit, every command group, every fleet, air wing and armor unit all had traitors. The conspiracy ran deep, deeper than any the Republic had ever faced before. The foundations laid by the Founding Fathers in their war against the Evil Empire in the 1730s were crumbling. Reform wouldn’t be enough, the Republic would not be able to overcome just how devastating this was. Elements within the central government urged President Prescott to declare the dissolution of the Union of Albany to reforge a new nation state in favor of rebranding and avoiding the stain this coup would leave on the Union’s legacy.

Many around her that she would have called friends were gone. The coup had stolen them away long before death was to call for them. Or was it God’s plan? Was this a test? A test of the mettle of the Republic? Were the people meant to see what path they were walking before Admiral Heywood’s treason? Or was this some shadow cabal pulling the strings in the open for the first time?

New Haven had avoided any long lasting damage and recovery was estimated to take six months there. Columbia hadn’t escaped as luckily with devastation in the financial district where the wreckage of two fighter jets crashed down. In the diplomatic quarter the Mydic and Sartorian embassies were damaged, the Mydic embassy was listed as a total loss with superficial damage to the Sartorian embassy.

Dorado was under security protection by Rousanian forces that had aided in the defense of Fort Bradwell in Sierra Springs near the Union-Rousania border. The allied forces repelled rogue armor attacks before securing the Deseret State capital city. There Rousanian forces remained to keep the peace and defend against any counterattacks while the loyalist Albanese forces under General Paul Halloran would carry out seek and destroy missions against rogue forces throughout the rest of Deseret and neighboring Evreux where the capital city of Mt.Picard and the largest city of Jeanville had both fallen to rogue forces. Governor of Evreux Isabel Key had been placed under house arrest by rogue military forces.

Governor of Arcadia Emily Archer was killed when the unit evacuating her to a safe location came under fire. Governor Archer was reported to have picked up a combat rifle and used her former military training to attempt to aid her detail. All were reported to have been killed and her deputy, Lieutenant Governor Gail Brown has already taken the oath and become the next Governor of Arcadia, vowing to continue the fight from the front line like her predecessor if necessary to ensure the longevity of the Republic.

The National Association of Governors has already put out a call to the various State Police to report to their local loyalist bases for deployment and that any civilian with a gun or with former military training was welcome to take up arms and defend the Republic. The Office of President Prescott echoed the sentiment calling on all able body citizens to help resist the coup. The President then invoked Article III of the National Defense Act that nationalizes the means of military production as well as activating Article IV which enacts a national emergency activation of all reserve personnel. There may yet be light at the end of this darkest of tunnels the Republic found itself in. Help was on the way.

Neither the Defence Magistracy nor other government or military offices wanted to confirm this at this point.

Unjust Peace, Part IV

The Battle of White Cliffs raged for an entire day. Loyalist forces under the command of General Paul Halloran had successfully repelled rogue forces from Deseret and had begun pushing into neighboring Evreux where both the largest city and the capital were under enemy control. Governor Key was under house arrest. The State was declared a Martial Republic with the first leader of the coup coming forward finally. General Maximilian Reed was declared Grand Marshal by forces of the Northern Army of the Martial Republics. They selected Mt.Picard as their de facto capital making it an immediate target for loyalist forces.

The Battle of White Cliffs saw one of the critical valleys into the State of Evreux attacked by the forces of General Halloran in an effort to free up an access into the state for other loyalist forces. Over two days and relentless fighting the loyalists were able to wrest control of the valley from the rogues. Aircraft had continued battling one another in the skies across the Union, hindering any close air support missions for either side, resulting in a slugfest on the ground. Thousands of casualties were flooding into military command. The reports were staggering about the severity of the mutiny. The declaration of the Evreux Martial Republic was met with contempt and President Prescott called on the Commonwealth, World Society, Valentian Alliance and all non-aligned states to not recognize the declaration of independence by Grand Marshal Reed as well as to denounce any further declarations from other rogue elements.

The streets of Columbia were devoid of any life. The fighting around the capitol building, Republic Palace and the old city quarter was intense, lots of windows were blown out during some of the most intense fighting. An evacuation of citizens was well underway as many more hid in the metro to avoid the worst of the fighting. The Congress building had taken a hit from a ricocheting round meant for a tank. The dome of the structure was cracked and visibly weakened.

The western states from Deseret to Tannen were in loyalist hands with Governor Wilson of Taysh leading the charge. In the east the situation was far more difficult as half the states were under partial or total occupation by rogue forces. President Prescott was still at an undisclosed location directing the federal response effort while the various loyalist governors were directing state forces in support of the federal government.

New Haven was liberated completely with Mayor Muriel Abott announcing a return to normalcy for the inhabitants while saying various corporations had approached offering material and personnel support wherever necessary. Security forces from the Atlas Corporation, Cloud Enterprises, Mercer Industries and Vaught Technologies were seen on the streets of New Haven in lieu of Federal and District forces being used to repel attacks on neighboring Arcadia, Appalachia, Keystone and the Midlands. Whether or not corporate security becomes the new norm on the streets of New Haven will remain yet to be seen until after the war.

Braxton, Caldwell and Cascadia were partially occupied by rogue forces. Ambrosia and Melody were entirely occupied. The struggle to liberate them was just beginning as another report went out throughout the nation’s military elite directing them that the enemies behind the attacks were none other than a group of radical military officers calling themselves the Temperance Council. This so-called Council claimed that they were defending the principles and morals of the Republic by eliminating its corrupting and perverse influences. They based their actions akin to the Founding Fathers tossing out the nobility and the monarchy so long ago. The Temperance Council consists of four members, General Richard Brighton, General Luis Calderon, General William Cornyn and General Riccardo Mazani. The four are led by General Brighton nominally who commands the rogue forces in Melody. Each has joined Grand Marshal Reed in declaring their occupied territories as Martial Republics and seeking international acceptance. The Martial Republics of Evreux, Melody, Ambrosia, Braxton and the Free State as it was being called joined in proclaiming the establishment of the Temperance Union.

Akarus has confirmed that its ambassador to the Union of Albany, Valery Lambert, is alive and has been moved to a safe location.

The embassy is attempting to confirm the status of Akarusian nationals in the Union, and is preparing an effort to repatriate any Akarusian nationals who may have been stranded as a result of the fighting.

Due to the situation in Albany, the Government of Khaledonia has decided to send a total of 3,500 soldiers and medical aid in support of the Government of Albany, Prime Minister Gomes said that "these rebels are going to cause the loss of freedom and justice in Albany, they helped a lot and we will help them too" Khaledonia will help our ally, also the soldiers will be accompanied by 24 fighter planes, 40 armored cars and 2 light tanks. While a small group of volunteers will go to Albany to help the wounded. Khaledonia has decided to be the leader of the internervion of the commonwealth to help albany

The Union of Albany is in turmoil as a coup has been reported. FENN is late to this story due to some technical errors, but we're back on the air to report it. The death toll includes a lot of their elected officials. Mydic officials say they will be sending military support for intervention. Despite the calls for the internal investigation of the Prescott administration, the FE is sending aid in the form of finances and medical treatment. The proposal was for 2.1 billion Astrons to be forwarded to the Union, but the Empress quickly reminded Parliament and the treasury that we are helping Vekkla fight their Lake Derrkinor Mountain Fire, which has been burning for a few weeks. The proposal went from 2.1 billion Astrons to just 15 million. It might be a petty response from the Empire, but the treasurer, a non-partisan role in the FE, said to be "grateful the FE is sending anything for the worry that was caused by Albanese warmongering". The Empress, not reiterating any of the Treasurer's words, said this:

(Xemptoworth): "I am not, or in any way saying the Union deserves what they got. A coup is not the best thing for a nation to go through. The FE almost went to civil war after PM Alex ceased Prime Minister Brown's government on counts of 'treason from breaking away from Cerula'. We want to help. It is in our nature to even help those who have hurt us. Though the Union has not hurt the FE physically, they have hurt us politically. Once this is over, much like how President Leemm and I are discussing how to ease tensions, Albany, Mydia, and the FE can discuss how to ease tension between the VA so no mishaps like this ever again. With that said, the Franconian Government will be sending National Guardsmen and Women to Albany to set up medical tents to help the injured in addition to 15 million Astrons for restoration of the Capitol. Blessed be the Franconian Government and the VA."

Though the FE has threatened an investigation on Albany, it may soon reverse the claim if Prescott says yes to the discussions. Hopefully she does. Live in San Juarez.

Grand President Koji Hoshino, speaking from Rainbow Road in military dress uniform, has announced a complete mobilisation of the Combined Fleet to support the legitimate government of the Union of Albany. With his entire Cabinet and General Staff present, the broadcast was televised nationwide.

“Our ally, our partner, our friend, has been attacked. Septima and Albany have fought together and bled together across countless battlefields the world over. For decades, they have been there to assist us with any issue that arose. Now, it is time for the ultimate test of our friendship.

Rogue military elements have attempted a coup across the Union. Hundreds have died already, thousands more are wounded or missing. Union leadership has been surgically targeted and killed. This is a terrible act, and one so egregious that it would be impossible to place into words.

Our response to this is crucial. It must be swift, it must be immediate, and it must be strong. Upon consultation with the General Staff, I have ordered a total mobilisation of available forces to support both military and relief efforts, and have deployed additional ships and aircraft out of Mugen-no-shima rapidly assist.

I have sent word to the World Society and the Commonwealth of Nations as well: Septima is leading the international response. Air Marshal Satomi Kawakami has been appointed to lead these efforts and coordinate effectively. She has my every confidence in such critical matters.

Albany will receive our full support. Our best friend through times thick and thin, they deserve nothing less. Together, we shall be victorious.”

The Seven Republics’ MCPs, as a unified body, put forth a motion to declare a state of emergency in the Union of Albany. This would grant the Commonwealth’s military expanded powers to restore order to specific areas as delineated in the motion.

MCP Satoshi Kon, Chief of the Septiman Delegation to the Commonwealth Parliament, spoke of a need to ensure the Commonwealth’s stability, as well as the restoration of order to the Union. The proposal would also move the Headquarters and Commission to Kyasuthie temporarily, until the state of emergency is rescinded.

Parliament is expected to vote on the measure shortly.

Albanese ambassador arrested as part of the Union declared independence

Oxnvuri, 20 meskermo 2075 | Richard Hallwell, the Ambassador of the Union of Albany to the Holy Empire of Majassa, has been arrested by the Majassan Police Force while doing some shopping in the central market of the capital. According to a spokesman of the People’s Council (Majassa’s government), the Force acted on government instructions following indications by the Prescott administration that Hallwell did not represent the elected government of the Union anymore. The Majassan press does not possess any further details about this story.

In the meantime, Magistrate of Foreign Affairs Jauxu Leda confirmed that the Prescott administration is the only government that the People’s Council currently recognises. “Martha Prescott is the President of the Union of Albany”, he said. “We do not recognise any Union based non-elected government that claims otherwise, nor any new independent state on the territory of the Union of Albany. The People’s Council is working together with its partners to ensure that the rightful government of the Union will be enabled to restore order.”

First Minister Marco Bonaventura led a meeting today where senior government officials discussed the evolving situation in Albany. In a subsequent statement the First Minister provided a summary of the government’s position:

• Ambassador Francesca Albioni was safely evacuated to an undisclosed location with the support of Union authorities and is currently working to ensure that all Sartorian citizens in Albany are accounted for and receive any needed consular support.

• Sartoria continues to recognise the government led by Martha Prescott as the sole legitimate government of Albany and condemns the military uprising that has sought to upend Albany’s democratic and constitutional order.

• Sartoria supports prompt discussions within the Valentian Alliance and the World Society to provide assistance to Albany to the extent that is needed to ensure that the legitimate government is able to repel the ongoing uprising.

• First Minister Bonaventura will seek to have a call with President Prescott to discuss Albany’s needs at this time and determine the kind of support that Sartoria and the Valentian Alliance could provide.

Republic Square, Columbia

Loyalist forces entered the square under fire from an armored regiment in dug out defenses. Units swarmed into the area flanking where they could. The street to street combat had been devastating to the old quarter of downtown Columbia. The Presidential Palace on the other end of Republic Square was on fire with one wing already a smoldering heap.

The Capitol dome which had been hit by a deflected rocket had crumbled and fallen into the rotunda Hall of States. All caught on dramatic live footage shot by the courageous frontline press corp covering the attempted coup.

Aircraft dodged anti air fire to hit enemy targets. A few buildings bore impact marks from various kinds of rounds. Smoldering apc’s and tanks dotted the streets. Makeshift barricades could be seen smashed to bits or entirely untouched. Some streets had civilians trying to make their way to the metro stations, there the trains were evacuating as many as they could to safety in New Haven. Operation Saving Grace was well underway as trains coming into the capital carried arms, munitions and most importantly reinforcements for the beleaguered loyalists.

President Prescott was able to establish contact with her ambassador to the World Society. She’s expressed hope that the Temperance Council and Council Forces can and will be overcome by the Federal Forces. President Prescott also confirmed the intent of Albany to receive outside intervention forces that could secure the largest cities freeing up Federal forces to carry out offensive operations.

Meanwhile in western Albany the Governor of Taysh, Allison Wilson announced the total liberation of the Heartlands and that Federal forces were pushing into Cascadia and Tannen. Governor Wilson promised fair tribunals for any council forces that surrender without a fight. While the federal government has not offered such a deal, they also have yet to say they wouldn’t abide by the Governors’ offer should anyone take her up on it.

New Haven’s Mayor proclaimed that the Federal District was free of all Council forces and influence and pledged assistance to the capital city in the coming days. President Prescott emerged from hiding to state that the capital has been temporarily moved to New Haven for the time being and that she will assemble an interim government there until the crisis is over. The President also affirmed that elections at many levels would need to be held after the coup was put down in order to fill the now decimated government.

Leemm had this to say:

Just because there was a misunderstanding doesn't mean that you should launch an investigation on their administration and military. Vekkla is with Albany in their toughest time. They've been there for us and are now with the Lake Derrkinor Mountain Fire, which is the worst fire in Vekkeli history. We will not fail."

President Leemm is falling behind in the polls today as he is gaining negative press. His view on the Environmental Catastrophe happening in Lake Derrkinor Mountain is having a negative impact on his promise to change the environment and ban chemical and trash dumping in rivers and lakes across the nation. 54% of the public says that they now have no faith in Leemm's Environmental Protection Plan due to his failure to declare Environmental Catastrophe at Lake Derrkinor Mountain. Leader of the Green-Life Party and Presidential Primary front-runner, Greta Hrand, has stated "Nobody should see that and think it is just another forest fire up in the mountains. Hazardous Air Alerts have been declared for the president's very own hometown!!! He is even wearing a military grade gas mask to protect him from the Hazardous Air. Because of the toxic smoke and smog that covers the Consreep area, a Stay at Home order has been put in place. It is a disaster!"

Mayor of Consreep, Ilga Greinvel, has officially denounced the president and has now said she will be supporting Greta.

Steps of the Capitol Ruins

Banners waved in the wind, bunting and other ornamental banners were billowing. Smoldering ruins across the square disclosed the devastation wrought on the capital city. The dome behind the podium was in shambles, the Hall of States was in ruins, the various statues and busts would need to be recovered or replaced. Several of the city’s residential highrises were pock marked from rocket and tank fire. While the city was scarred its people had retreated to safety as best they could or taken up arms to defend the Republic. Albany was standing firm against a dark tide that had broken against its shores.

Tens of thousands were in the square with small flags in hand. Determination on the face of all present. Cheers erupted as emotion swept the crowd as President Martha Prescott took to the podium. Jets flew low overhead in a show of force and precision. The President was dressed in a white pantsuit with the Albanese flag lapel pin she was known for always being seen wearing. Also present was a black ribbon symbol with a heart bearing the same Albanese flag design. The black ribbon had become a symbol of defiance against the darkness that had swept the nation. Taking the black ribbon away from the Council Forces as a sign of rebellion drew the power of the symbol away and President Prescott was keen to exploit the shift in public narrative to steal such a symbol.

“God has blessed our great Union as he backs us in our defiance against the forces of evil once again!” Her voice was strong and bearing the weight of her office. “Citizens, as we continue to push back the forces of the so-called Temperance Union, we must ensure that this never happens again. Our Republic has been assaulted from within by those we trusted to safeguard us. We are blessed to have allies and partners willing to reach out and help us in our darkest of times. Thank you to all of them on behalf of the Republic.” The President turned her attention to an aid as he whispered something to her.

“I’ve just been informed that two of the supposed Council leaders have turned themselves in and ordered their respective forces to stand down and surrender without a fight. At this time the Albanese high command believes that only the occupation forces in Melody and Evreu remain. We will liberate our countrymen and show that our Republic stands firm against this despicable stain.” Cheers erupted from the crowd again and President Prescott descended the steps and began to mingle and meet members of the general public. Some told her stories of their time in the capital city or on the evacuation routes. She recounted how her protective detail woke her up early that morning and got her and her family as well as a few of her cabinet secretaries onto Falcon 1 and out of Columbia before anything had really happened. She told of learning how widespread the initial mutiny was before the military was able to assess the true size of the force and that some of the Council forces were unaware they were acting against the Republic rather than defending it.

The fight had turned in Albany’s favor and with the arrival of vanguard forces from the coalition such as air wings and ground troops from Khaledonia and security forces from Rousania, there was a renewed sense of optimism as allied forces relieved Federal forces to begin taking the fight to the Council strongholds. Mydic and Septiman forces were likely arriving within days as well and that would solidify the outcome in the favor of the legitimate government. Intervention forces were likely to be asked to remain in Albany until after new elections and the swearing in afterward of the new government could be carried out so as to ward off any further attempts till a federal government can be restored.

Several witnesses have reported that shots were fired near the offices of the People’s Council, but we haven’t been able to confirm this from a reliable source yet. We have however received a communication from the chief of the police force General Arri Osucniba himself, who urgently requests citizens to leave the governmental area of Oxnvuri immediately if they can, or to stay indoors. I can tell you that something is going on, so if you are in the are, please take care of yourself. We will keep you updated as soon as we have more on this story.”

Unjust Peace, Part VII
New Haven and Melody

The city froze as air raid sirens wailed and the sound of interceptors racing skyward to defend the populace from missiles launched by Council forces meant to bring terror to the people. The streaks of light and the audible thuds upon a successful intercept filled the night sky like small popcorn explosions. A concert meant to raise money for those affected in the capital city and other major centers that faced damage was halted as people hurried to shelter. Public transit ground to a stop and the passengers sought shelter in neighboring buildings or under car garages, in metro stations and other hardened buildings. There was no panic, orderly descent into safety as everyone sought to remain calm.

Mayor Muriel Abott was hurried into a secure bunker beneath the city where she was informed that Council forces had launched a massive barrage in excess of sixty missiles. Military brass also informed her that more were to likely be launched over the next hour and the military would intercept as many as they could but that citizens should be informed to shelter in place for hours.

Flights that had only just resumed at the two international airports of the Federal District of New Haven, had to be hurriedly directed away as incoming fire and interceptors would make the sky a veritable net of death. One near miss in particular saw a flight full of Mydic and Franconian nationals having to veer hard to avoid a direct hit from a missile. Two missiles hit the runways at the smaller of the two airports with no reported casualties there, damage was said to be light.

Those on the public beaches for some late night swimming or enjoying the artificially bioluminescent reef off the coast scurried to seaside shelters. Some stayed filming the streaking interceptors and the wailing sirens. An eerie reminder to the people of the Union’s largest urban center, a veritable megalopolis, the nation was in a fight for its way of life.

Operation Swift Shore
65,000 personnel from the Albanese 3rd, 4th Fleets, 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th and 7th Armies as well as multiple elements from the Mydic Expeditionary Force assaulted coastal defenses held by Council forces all along the Melodic coast. Establishing a beachhead here was crucial to relieving the forces fighting to push the Council to Evreu for a final fight. There the remaining Council Forces were gathering to make a final stand now that they realized their plan had failed. Albany would not cower to some martial state, never would the eagles of the republic be lowered in deference to some imperialist standard. Albany would never bow, not again.

Communication between the Joint Chiefs, theater commanders and the Septiman point of contact for coalition forces was smooth as could be. The Septiman personnel were shining examples of what a well trained and professional force embodied. Respect for their long allies was immense, Albany knew it could count on Septima through whatever happened. A feeling some in Albany wished Mydia could still fulfill, some hoped that the removal of a conservative government there would possibly open the door for old allies turned enemies to find a new start.

“Good morning again, this is Ole Majassa; I am Mrenvxa Kupovrgei and if you just joined us, we are reporting an incident in the governmental area of the capital where it has now been confirmed that shots were fired near the offices of the People’s Council. The police is looking for one or more shooters and the public is advised to stay indoors or to get out of the area as quickly as possible; the area is being sealed off by the police as we speak so looking for cover indoors may in fact be the only advisable option. We have no reports yet about victims, if any, but nevertheless the national police force has emphasised that this is a highest priority alert situation. We… er… (speaking to someone behind the scenes) What? I’m sorry, I don’t follow… Was he there? … (back to the camera, somewhat upset) I’m sorry, but we will have to leave it here for now. We will try to get back to you for more as soon as possible.”

The tune starts but the screen goes black before it ends.

“This is most unfortunate! How are we supposed to conduct the investigation like this?”, General Arri Osucniba, the chief of the Majassan Police Force was visibly annoyed. “This is the highest priority alert situation; how can anything take priority over that?” He was talking to the Magistrate of Defence, Cevmi Astvngeirxe, who had joined him in his office when the situation developed. “The Palace always takes precedence; it is how it is”, the Magistrate said.

They had both been instructed by a liaison from the Imperial Palace who had just left. The news would be announced gradually, as is custom, although the fact that the nation’s television screens had all gone black would be a good enough indication of part of what is going on. Public life would come to a standstill for at least a week, which also meant that ongoing police investigations would have to be interrupted or, in the present case of a high priority alert situation, conducted with the utmost discretion and decorum.

“Under these circumstances, we won’t be able to catch whoever did this”, the General said. “Cvetuna (the God of Victory) has granted them the largest piece of luck imaginable!”

“Now follows an announcement by the Chamberlain Marshal Kenau Cendargi Mihvsturcauvo!”

An image of the Imperial Palace is shown, the curtains of which have been replaced by black ones and are closed. Then the camera zooms in to a lectern near the main entrance of the palace, where a middle aged man in ceremonial robes is waiting.

“August Members of the First Families, Eminent Members of the Clergy, Distinguished Members of the Ruling and Military Order, Dear Citizens of the Holy Empire,” the Chamberlain starts. “It is with great sadness and sorrow that I present myself before you today on behalf of the Successor, Her Imperial Highness Vaxvivei, Her Imperial Highness the Princess-Consort Ubei, Their Imperial Highnesses Prince Rivni and Princess Kacmovoi as well as the other members of the Imperial Family to announce the death of His Imperial Majesty Veixe I, Holy Emperor of Majassa. The Princess-Consort wishes to divulge to the late Holy Emperor’s subjects that her husband peacefully died in his sleep this morning after a short lapse of health.

A period of nationwide mourning is declared, which will last for nine days, after which the Obsequies will be performed. On behalf of the Imperial Family I ask you to remember Holy Emperor Veixe I as the great man that he was, and to pray to all of the Gods that his spirit may be welcomed to its rightful place in the Gardens of the Divine Realm.”

The camera zooms out and shows once more an image of the Imperial Palace.

Condolences of Empires
The Empire of Rousania alongside The Mydic Empire offered condolences to the people of Majassa as well as Their Imperial Household over the sudden death of the Holy Emperor Veixe I. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also cautioned travel advisories to be aware of the period of mourning and to abide by local laws around such a time.

Ice Missions

It is three weeks until the crews from the VA Ice Missions come home and new studies find that the ocean has seen an increase in fish population in the northern regions of the globe. Since 2040, the ocean temperature has only risen by .5C, making it good enough for a small increase in cod, grayling, and eelpout. This will go good for many fishing villages and major fishing companies as small increases lead to small profits increases, but the FE is asking the world to preserve some fish in all species so the repopulation process takes place and natural selection can take place, but Xemptoworth knows that she can't save all of them.

(Xemptoworth): "The fish that far north of the equator should be protected until overpopulation of said species. For example, say there were schools upon schools of sea bass. I, and hopefully alongside the VA when it is proposed, would allow fishing of the species until numbers reach low numbers. Once the population of the fish gets low enough, the FE will declare the fish species with low population amounts 'endangered'. We hope to help these polar fish alive and thriving."

President Leemm Highlights

President Leemm has returned to Vekkla from his business trip to the FE. He had this to say about the FE.

(Leemm): "Your nation is beautiful. It was unfair for us to hold a silly grudge, especially for 5 decades. We are going to work with the Franconian Government to increase awareness of environmental protection. Vekkla is in dire need of it. I thank the Empress and her people for the amazing hospitality and conversations."

Successes:

Leemm said that he is willing to trade Franconian Green Energy for corn, wheat, and barley (key ingredients for øl, or Franconian Beer). Leemm and Xemptoworth also spoke about how to decrease tensions and have agreed to 10 more discussions for this year and next to go into further detail. The two nations have also announced that they will start an environmental protection day where people will conserve energy in their home for 5 hours. New meters are being designed and patented by both governments to track how much energy usage each home is using if on the Central Power Grid. The project is being ran by Vekkla and the FE and will be funded by ChipCo Electric and Vekkla's Central Power Company.

President Leemm has also agreed to monitor air quality closer and to disallow the dumping chemicals and toxins in rivers and lakes, a big one up from the policy that allowed it 30 years ago. Vekkla is clearly wanting to make changes in their environment and want to make difference. That is why the FE is willing to work with a "not-so-close" partner and invest 310 million Astrons to help clean the air and rivers around Vekkla.

Cons:

Leemm seemed very hesitant about some answers about why he thinks this conflict has lasted 51 years. One of his answers was this...

(Leemm): "Vekkla needed help... Franconia didn't want to help. It wasn't... that we needed to work together, but they could have taken a path... to, uh, excellency and prosperity."

He also showed slouching postures. Images of Leemm in the meetings showed him slumped over with his elbows on his knees and hands resting under his jaw. Another image shows Xemptoworth making a concerned expression at Leemm as he was caught falling asleep with Vekkla being only one hour behind the FE in timezone. Was he ill during the meeting?
