People’s Council approves construction of railway line between Gacnrouxa and Houhvndi

Oxnvuri, 8 amvlaivo 2075 | Xuvtou Ugenxi, the Magistrate of Public Works, has announced that a new railway track will be constructed in Kemi, Majassa’s northernmost province. The line will connect Kemi’s capital Gacnrouxa with its two other major centres Duni and Houhvndi. Gacnrouxa is already connected to the south of Majassa by railway via the city of Nuvrebuca, but the less developed desert north of the country is still falling behind. The new line will be able to reach speeds of 300 km/h. Magistrate Ugenxi hopes that the railway line should improve the economic situation of Kemi and its citizens. Construction of the line will start next year and will take several years to complete.

Among Chaos, Qastari Welcomes Majassa to Commonwealth

President Mareqi of Qastari, happy to welcome a nation as worthy of Commonwealth membership as Majassa into the alliance, publicly spoke on the significance of the occasion today at the capital. Majassa has been a good friend to the Commonwealth for decades, and is seen by the majority of Qastari citizens and state officials alike as a positive move forward. "In a world steadily descending into a return to conflict, for those of us who band together to retain stability and the advancement of our peoples, we can only benefit from this rare occassion."

All was not as well in the capital as it would initially seem however. While election bids get ever closer, resentment towards the current government have fomented just under the surface within circles who feel that they've been pushed out of Qastari politics. In 1960, the Qastari National Assembly voted by a margin of 57-43 to ban the Nationalist Party from holding office after recent years of unrest which turned violent. With the Party's desire to force themselves back into the political sphere, with some support from the Liberal and Traditionalist parties, the Nationalist party came out in force to oppose Majassa's introduction to the Commonwealth; or perhaps one should say, Qastari's own inclusion in the Commonwealth. It's a political faction which feels that for too long, the political spectrum has shifted far from its policy of the past, with Qastari's interests shifting too far outside its own borders and even into the stars.

While there were no arrests, a significant crowd of Nationalist and possibly other parties as well gathered outside the capital building to protest Nationalist party exclusion from Qastari politics, as well as its continued focus of developing and aiding other countries as the Worker's and Progress Parties see fit - or so they think it seems. The Liberal Party, second largest Party in Qastari with 59 current seats in the National Assembly, joins them in opposing election reforms which severely restrict the ways in which political candidates can advertise their campaigns - elections in Qastari are structured so that all candidates are allotted the same amount of money to spend in elections, with no private money allowed to be spent. Media outlets are also mandated not to show clear preference in how much parties or candidates are covered - although a particular weakness of the legislation is that this is stated rather ambiguously. Despite this law being applied evenly across all parties and candidates, parties which have not gained popularity since see it as giving their opponents an advantage.

It is notable that, in the opinion of the average Qastari citizen, Majassa's introduction into the Commonwealth of Nations polls positively at 73/19%, with 9% unsure. The ruling government and President Mareqi, despite the chaotic-but-not-violent protests of the day, have assured the population that tensions always rise during elections years and that things will return to normal shortly. When questioned later, Mareqi did not seem altogether concerned with the situation, but regretted that such a day could be tainted in such a way.

Rebels from different armed groups have been joining the society, but most of them come from extremely poor families, they don't know how to read or write, etc. The government of Prime Minister Gomez and President Mohamed Zayad had decided to create the RAG or in its acronym Rebel Aid Group, this group will help the different rebels with these types of problems so that their return to society is faster and easier.

Garbage Burning Ban to Reverse

As of 18:54 this evening, the ban on burning garbage in Vekkla has been lifted. The ban was placed in 1999 when pollution levels in Vekkla were too horrible. This was all in part of cars, factory smoke, and horrible trash collection standards. In '99, Vekkelis used to set their trash on fire after they threw it in the bin. 63% of the pollution was coming from trash fires alone. You would have thought it was due to the thick smog from factories, but there were very limited pollution standards in place for factories. Congress and the House of Majors both say the air is "far too clean" and is "starting to look and smell like a VA nation".

Space for Space

As we know, Vice President Harris from the Union will be meeting President Orgo Leemm and VP Villk to discuss CN matters involving Vekkla. Leemm expressed the interest of the nation's space program expanding. Leaked papers and notes from the President say that they will be talking about expanding the space program with hopefully a couple of other nations included. Vice President Chenski Villk will also be speaking about a potential Union trip asking only because he "has never been before and heard it is lovely this time of year". Kind, kind words from the VP.

Qastari has launched a new freighter from its capital, the first of its line, featuring a massive state of the art Kinetic Energy Recovery system. The system harnesses the energy of forces from the the vessel's roll, pitch, and yaw in order to recharge an internal rechargable battery system. This battery supplements the rest of the ship's engines, enhancing the ship's efficiency and capabilities:
- less usage of energy supplied at ports is needed, improving the range and mileage of the vessel
- the maximum speed of the vessel is slightly increased
- the effect of forces acting upon the vessel are slightly reduced, resulting in a more comfortable voyage for sailors and less damage to cargo

Large swarms of Vespa Tropica have been found in the Southeast Empire. It will be given the name the "Long Stinger Wasp". We aren't sure if these wasps live in other tropical parts of the tropics and it could be a sibling subspecies of the Franconian Vine Wasp, which has a similar lengthed stinger and antenna. People are wondering where it came from and why the FE, but all we know is that San Juarez isn't ready for when they take over.

Star Studded Gala
Following the explosions in Mydare, members of imperial high society announced a charity auction, dinner and gala complete with celebrity appearances, all in the name of raising money for those affected by the blasts. Attendance exceeded 2,500 not including the gaggle of press and government officials.

The event was hosted by newlywed Prince Alexandros and his wife, Princess Charlene at the Knossica Palace on the artificial island Chione. The sprawling modern architecture mixed with an ancient style palace blended well with the scenery. The glitz and glamor stood in stark contrast to the situation on the ground in Mydare itself where thousands continued to pick up the pieces from the devastating terror attack.

The government of Archon Galanis stood under attack by the opposition and defectors in her own party as well as souring public opinion. Calls for a recall vote were growing louder and the charity function also served to buoy the Archon during this trying time.

Reaction to Commonwealth Expansion
The Government released a brief statement offering resigned congratulations to the Holy Empire for their smooth accession process though the government chose to point to the Alliance as the beacon of freedom and safety in an increasingly dangerous world.

Pan-Valentian Power Grid
The new Minister of Energy, Zoe Decleides, encouraged Sartoria to expeditiously join the Pan-Valentian Grid with Franconia and Mydia saying “Energy security is a human right and it is high time the Republic joined with us in this endeavor.” The Minister also announced the expansion of the Helios projects in the interior bringing the total number of solar arrays to 132 up from 112 just five years ago with another 28 to be built by the 2078 deadline.

Commonwealth Exploration Expands
Commonwealth Space Administrator Collin Briggs today announced the creation of the “Quad Initiative for Space Exploration'' which would consist of a new space group within the CSP. The Quad would be HQed in Qastari who would serve as mission command and senior representative of the Quad to the Commonwealth Space Program. Khaledonia would be appointed as the primary launch site and manufacturer of aerospace following investment by the Union and CN. Majassa and Vekkla would handle raw materials, high tech equipment and personnel for the missions supporting the other two. The Quad is to focus on establishing a permanent human foothold on Janus the tidally locked world. Launch is set for July 2077.

Space Administrator Briggs elaborated that the Union had immense hope for the Quad and their missions to Janus, the name of which has yet to be unveiled by Quad members, to bring about a period of close cooperation and mutual respect among CN members. Space Administrator Briggs also noted the inclusion of Majassa as based on their full membership coming a full year following admittance. The CN through the Quad Initiative was showing that even members normally incapable of reaching these heights themselves were able to do so thanks to the Commonwealth’s collective agreements.

Following the Q&A segment of the Quad portion, Space Administrator Briggs announced that contact with Leviathan I had been lost and that it was now the opinion of the Administration that the beacon may have been damaged on entry into Sorana’s atmosphere rather than the prefab habitat and cargo supplies being actually destroyed. He has highlighted that the Union expects Leviathan 2 to launch in the Summer of 2077 on schedule.

VP in Vekkla
Vice President Harris in talks with the President and Vice President of Vekkla discussing the former’s now confirmed $65 billion investment into the mining and infrastructure in Vekkla. The Union’s Direct Investment Fund (DIF) is set to disperse the investment over 10 years as Vekkla hits specific targets on the environment, works rights and compensation for dangerous working environments such as mines and refineries.

It’s public knowledge that Vice President Harris has been an outspoken member of the Union Party’s EnviroFirst caucus. Part of the reason that Martha Prescott, the pro-business hawkish traditionalist chose him as her running mate.

The Vice President is also expected to make a stop at the World Society to speak to the Secretary General regarding the ongoing status dispute over the Egian Archipelago. The Union is said to be considering a formal request for WS oversight of the referendum after rumors that the Mydic government might interfere in the plebiscite.

Harris has agreed to invest 65 billion Vekks (currency of Vekkla) in Vekkeli infrastructure and mining sectors of our economy. President Leemm agreed to improve working conditions down in the mines and is asking Congress to close Lake Derrkinor Mountain. President Leemm is also working with Congress on a "Limited Use of Cars" bill that would only allow you to use your car on certain days of the week if the newly developed Department of Air Quality Control doesn't declare "Bad Air Alerts". All of this will take time and the public is now left wondering what a naturally clean and healthy environment would look like. Will there be any more acid rain, brown snow, smoke and ash flying about in the air? Vice President Harris says over time, no. If we start now, asthma rates in the country's cities would be reduced exponentially in the next 4 to 7 years. Vekkla, let's make our skies blue again and kick the crud out of pollution.

Just a couple of days ago, our long time rival has said that they are cleaning up their environment. That's good and all, but does it really affect them? Well actually it's due to an investment from the Union worth a mind boggling 65 billion Astrons. The terms of the investment were massive improvements to environmental standards and workforce protection with compensation for mining jobs and any job that includes heavy manual labour. We here in the FE think it was about time that the Republic showed keen interest in the environment, but anything for a pretty Plenga (equivalent to 1 cent(s) USD). Even if they are doing this for money, Franconian Ambassador in Consreep say that the trash burning law might have to be banned again after a slew of new legislation and ideas hit Vekkeli Congress' floor for eco spaces, recycling centers, and new and updated ides to surely get the economy to get going again. They seem truly passionate about it. And for that, we say congratulations on the improvements.

Government in Chaos
Following the bombings, the grueling public attention and now defections from her own Coalition Government by senior ministers, Archon Lydia Galanis has announced that effective immediately the National Conservative Coalition is dissolving the Synedrio in favor of snap elections. Also at this time the Archon announced her intention to not stand for reelection and will instead stay on in a caretaker role until the election is finished and a new government prepared to swear in within two months. The Galanis Administration has officially resigned and the Mydic Empire will head into early elections.

Opposition leader Georgios Mastanakis heralded the moment as a true triumph for a fair and free society as the public he said was “sure to toss out the conservatives” after their “failures.” Mastanakis, 49, has been the leader of the main opposition since 2072 following an upset underdog leadership contest against then Opposition Leader Marcellus Pzakis. Following that upset victory, newly minted Opposition Leader Mastanakis set about differentiating from the National Conservatives and bringing the Liberal Left into a Grand Alliance in opposition of the ruling coalition.

Now with the Synedrio being dissolved as early as tomorrow, calls for Mastanakis to openly declare intent to run for Archon have grown. An announcement is likely within a few hours as others on the political spectrum begin to openly state intent to run or not. Already Deputy Archon Luix Hekklas has announced his intent to campaign on behalf of the ruling coalition and seems to have the support of the majority of Conservative Party members.

Lydia Galanis, Political Victim or Inept Leader?
Archon, mother, wife, devout adherent to the Lateran Faith and political master. After her landslide 2070 election against the opposition leader Marcellus Pzakis, newly proclaimed Archon Galanis set about attempting detente with the Commonwealth, specifically with softening the border and relations with the Empire’s own southern neighbor of Qastari. The effort saw early success in allowing the Empire’s border realms to more easily allow travel, at least on the Mydic side of the border, to allow for the more consistent flow of goods and tourism.

Unfortunately for the Archon, the Union’s own election in 2070 brought Martha Prescott, the current Union President into power. The two were early partners looking to reform the World Society Security Council as well as looking to resolve the dispute between the two nations over the status of the Mydic controlled but Union claimed Egian Archipelago in the south Valentian Ocean. The islands had belonged to the Union since they were first inhabited in the 1700s but they were occupied by Mydia in the Great War’s closing year as well as during the occupation. Changes in government in both nations as well as the general chaos when Austra shattered in the late 2020s led to the islands’ status never being resolved. Now an ongoing plebiscite is expected to hand the islands back to the Union after nearly 52 years.

At home the Archon faired a bit better having seen the domestic successes of her policies in further reducing poverty in the Empire as well as overseeing a necessary overhaul of the nation’s aging canals dating from the 2030s in the interior as well as the commissioning of 14 new nuclear power plants with a combined reactor count of 60 new reactors. Also during her five year tenure as Archon, Lydia Galanis was able to oversee the establishment of the Pan-Valentian Powergrid between VA member Franconia and the Empire.

The public perception of the Archon remained high even when the plebiscite for the islands were announced. It was the explosions of terrorist bombs in the capital city that nearly claimed her own life and that of her former Deputy Archon, before naming Luix Hekklas the new Deputy Archon. While sentiment remains favorable towards Lydia Galanis on a personal level, a majority of respondents nearly 2:1 say it is time for a new leader and nearly 3:5 also say it is time for a new direction for the Empire and that the current is simply not sufficient.

Egia Answers
The streets of Columbia City were swollen with people. Tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands, even the low millions is what the Capital Police District’s PR team said was the official figures. The live estimates only climbed as other cities, New Haven, Central City, Dorado, Braxwell and in Remington reported similar throngs of people in the streets. Many were decked out in Union colors of red, white and blue. The streamers and flags adorned nearly every building in every major city. The entirety of the Union waited with baited breath.

“With 131,262 votes against…” the groans grew before being hushed back down as everyone’s attention zeroed in on the holoannouncer. “And with 131,293 in favor…” He didn’t even need to finish his words before the confetti, fireworks and all manner of other sound making things erupted into a chorus of chaos and celebration.

Martha sighed the most relieving sigh she’d had since giving birth the last time. The Egian Islands, once known as the Beacon Archipelago 52 years ago would finally be returned to their rightful protector, the Amerigan Union. The “long struggle” was over. The reunification and making of the whole of the Union would be complete by year’s end. A true success and one that would solidify Martha Prescott’s fate in the history books as a unifier of the Union’s old borders.

The Union was gaining a foothold in a strategically viable area of the Valentian Ocean, and one that until now had led to a difficult military situation where the Union would have been hard pressed to link up with Khaledonian forces should the Mydic Empire or VA have stopped them. Open conflict being talked about behind closed doors only led to hushes and whispers. With the returning of the islands a large task at hand had been given to the Union, they would no doubt need to ensure that the treatment of those living on the islands now would not overall see much of a change in status. It was with this in mind that the day after the referendum Martha Prescott called a press conference that would be broadcast nationwide.

“Citizens of the Union. I stand before you today to announce and affirm that the will of the Beacon Archipelago has been made clear. They want to be returned to the Union without delay and as smoothly as possible. It is my hope and that of the Union itself that those who wished to remain part of the Mydic Empire, I speak to you now.” Her demeanor shifted as she now looked directly into the camera itself. “We see you, we hear you. Your feelings are valid and your culture is valid. You have a place in the Union and if you wish to depart then we will compensate any Islander wishing to relocate back to Mydia. For those that remain we will guarantee your safety and your rights as well as your property. No appropriation will be carried out by this or any future administration as I am also announcing the creation of the Beacon Archipelago Special Administrative Zone (BASAZ) which will see the Mydic Empire retain a 5 year lease on the Spaceport on the islands as well as that of the joint Mydic Navy-Air force base also present on the islands. Following the five year agreement it will be potentially leased to the Empire at acceptable terms to both parties or returned to the Union. Furthermore all scientific and civilian endeavors, on or near the islands are going to be allowed to continue without hindrance as well as any transitory missions to the Antarctic. It is with sincere gratitude and hope that the Union looks forward to this next chapter with the islands and with our partners in the Commonwealth. Thank you all.” The Presidential Seal flashed on the screen before regular broadcasting resumed.

The Imperial Observer

Snap Elections in the Empire
Following the announcement by Archon Galanis that she would use her party’s majority coalition to bring about snap elections shook up the political scene in the Empire. While the Synedrio is elected in 5 year intervals, it would not be since 2043 that an Archon was forced from office before the customary 10 year mark. The last was when Archon Tatiana Petrea was impeached and removed from office for ordering the alleged bombing of the cruise ship “Olympia” in the Egian Exclusion Zone in 2042 in an effort to force an undisclosed nation to join Mydia against the Union in the Egian War. Her immediate successor Archon Georgios Pollitali had chosen to serve the remainder of Archon Petrea’s term rather than seek additional time.

Standing in the upcoming national elections are the four main parties accompanied by a slew of smaller parties. The four are the National Conservative Alliance of the current ruling government who’s chief candidate is the current Deputy Archon, Luix Hekklas. Deputy Hekklas rose from a back bencher to Deputy Archon just days ago following the death of his predecessor during the Mydare Bombings. An avowed monarchist, the young politician will likely face calls by the more conservative members of his party to push for more socially conservative agenda items such as limiting immigration and beefing up the borders with Qastari. Luix Hekklas hails from the interior realm of Amazonia.

Further rightward in the national political spectrum is the National Front led by 64 year old Andronicus Mede. Current Defense Minister in the Galanis Administration, Minister Mede has been a vocal and open critic of the Galanis’ budget cuts in defense as well as openly critical that the VA is falling behind the Commonwealth in military matters. Minister Mede is seen as an ultraconservative Messianic faith follower who has issues with several social policies seemingly settled by the remainig three mainstream parties such as Same Sex Marriage, Abortion Access and Religious Rights. While his party has the fewest members of the big four, they are still considered a potent and possible king maker faction in the Synedrio.

To the center left is the Social Democrats, the traditional opposition against the National Conservatives and their leader Georgios Mastanakis at 49 is the second oldest running for Archon in this election, behind only the National Front Leader. Mastanakis has been the main opposition leader since his rise in the early 2070s up the ranks of the Social Democrats. Seen as the most viable party, the SD has set its sights on running the government for the first time since the administration of Babis Loriades in 2020-2030. Already well positioned from the implosion of the Galanis Administration, the Social Democrats found themselves on the right side of public opinion having been the only major party backing a return of the Egian Islands to the Union as well as pushing for a public plebiscite on the status of the Mydic Monarchy. Already some are saying that a win for the Social Democrats would be the end of the Monarchy since their leader, Georgios Mastanakis is an avowed Republican. Officially the party has refused to state its position on whether a referendum would be held if they were to win a majority in the Synedrio. Already the far right National Front is positioning the election as a referendum on the Monarchy itself.

Lastly, further to the left you have the New Dawn Party. While officially larger than the Ultralnatinoalist National Front, the New Dawn party is the scion of the Libertarian and Green parties’ merger in 2071 following their collective defeat in the 2070 election. Party leader is a staggeringly young 35 year old woman by the name of Margot Xedes hailing from Mydare itself. The young politician is only in her second 5 year term in the Synedrio and before that taught primary school in the capital city. Answering the call to action by former Archon Tripidis to join politics and be the voice of the disenfranchised. The New Dawn Party calls for a referendum on the monarchy, a reform of the criminal justice and education systems and the elimination of the tax free system around religious organizations. A long shot but seen as resonating with younger voters, Margot Xedes will have to mobilize the least enthusiastic voting bloc to begin to consider an upset against the major parties.

The election is set to be held no later than September 1 2075.

• Infrastructure Minister Dafne Rizzo signed a memorandum today to incorporate Sartoria into the Pan Valentian Power Grid. Minister Rizzo said in subsequent remarks that Sartoria was committed to deepening the integration among VA member states and that expanding the Grid was but one of several ways in which members could help each other become more prosperous. The signing ceremony was attended by representatives from Mydia and Franconia, the countries that first established the Grid, as well as leaders from the energy sector.

• Heritage Party Leader Ippolito Baggio gave an interview yesterday where he expressed serious concern over the recent expansion of the Commonwealth of Nations, calling it "little more than an instrument for Albany to grow its sphere of influence". Mr Baggio, whose party forms part of the current governing coalition, stated that Sartoria should play a more assertive role in the international stage, particularly as longtime partner Mydia has been afflicted by domestic issues and the loss of the Egia Archipelago. A recent Isola poll shows 89% support for a firmer stance against Albany, showing wide appeal for this position across party lines.

• Ambassador to the Valentian Alliance Giulia Foglietta celebrated today the decision of the Valentian Council to admit Akarus as a full member following a years-long admission process. Sartoria was a strong advocate for admission and called the process a "natural step to both strengthen our alliance and deepen our ties to a valued and trusted partner". It is expected that once the necessary documentation is completed a ceremony will be held with the presence of ambassadors from all member states to formally sign the admission of Akarus and raise its flag at the VA Headquarters.

Mydia has seen some trouble in the past few days. A snap election has recently been called to elect either an Imperialist or a Republican. Only their people can tell. So far, 4 people have been selected for the running and it's clear to us that whatever our neighboring nation turns out to be, we'll always be of support.

Archipelago Rename

Egian Archipelago has voted to go to the Union. The Union has decided to rename it the Beacon Archipelago Special Administrative Zone. The BASAZ will be of importance to the Union and the CN. Military bases and space launch sites are there, but with limited Mydic use. Once fully occupied, the Union will rule the Archipelago, which they haven't in over 50 years. Truly historic events happening on Vesta, throughout the globe. Let's keep going...

Bad News for the VA

Majassa has entered the CN, but won't be granted full membership until next year. That makes the VA kind of at a disadvantage. With VA only at 4 nations, the CN has us surrounded leaving people wondering if the FE will ever exit the VA. Empress Xemptoworth said "not in a million years". All candidates have stated to be pro-VA, including the far right ones. So why are there more nations in the CN? It's complicated and we currently don't have the answer for that question at the moment.

Improvement for the Protector Isles

East and West Protector Isle have been dealing with issues such as insufficient housing and poor schooling centers for the children of that area. Hospitals were closing and streets were severely damaged. The Xemptoworth administration was only focused on the Main Island and it has swung those states yellow (Commoners Party). Wayne Cage-Casey and Hildiiga Fjölden are said to have rallies there later this week campaigning not only for themselves, but also for those who needed assistance and never got it.

The Empress has said that this will "be a good thing for regional energy security" and hopes Akarus want to join in on the future.

Ready for Takeoff

The VA led mission to the north pole to watch how climate change is affecting the world's ocean levels is ready for takeoff. The FE Climate Emergency Board calls this trip "Mission Polar Bear". The voyagers will takeoff from Port San Juarez and will depart at 5 am Franconian Time. It will be a tremendous opportunity as well because the first Franconians are going to the poles in history. Information expected to be gathered is how polluted the water is, how pollution and ice melt is affecting the wildlife at lower latitudes just before the arctic circle, and whether there are any new invasive species waiting to be discovered. Mydic Empire is Crumbling

This is why you don't have a constitutional monarchy! Protests erupt and they cannot vote for a king or queen. Although they do have open elections, it is never for the actual leader of the country. This is why a republic would be best. They can vote, vote, vote! Vote for whomever! Vote for the dang neighborhood whacko if you want. We don't get these types of things happening in Vekkla. This is why you need a republic. The people want it just so they can have their voices heard on a more direct level. Who steps out of office after an "insurrection". Snap elections are only called by bad leaders, and it seems Archon Galanis was weak enough to step down after silly protests. It kind of makes a bad name for the VA because who is to say the other 3 won't do that... especially Xemptoworth. Look at her for example. She is tiiiirrreeed! You can tell she will step down soon, even if the election for Franconia is next year. President Leemm has stated "It is a shame to see a nation implode in full view of Vesta. Now what are you going to do?".

Tourism to Boom

A private investor has asked President Leemm if they can build a golf course spanning a whole island. Though it sounds fun, it should be more of a country club than a massive 78 hole golf course spanning two islands. With plans on the golf course changed, President Leemm has said that he will invest 2.1 billion of his own Vekks to help expenses. This island is located off the west coast of Betrovisk State, you can either sail or fly to the island in a private yacht you can rent for only 800 Vekks per week! A marina, skydiving course, scuba diving lessons, and so much more will be added to the island over time. Rumors of a theme park, built by Franconian coaster enthusiasts (OOC: who have no background so it will be like an Action Park type situation). We may not like Franconian things, but they sure do know how to build a coaster. The whole of the project will cost 17.99 billion Vekks and will bring 8900 jobs to the Vekkeli Economy. Construction will take 4 years and will open halfway through to offer their first few amenities. Ticket prices start at 650 Vekks.

Mission Update Leviathan I
The Leviathan I mission was launched from Vesta in 2074 bound for the Ringed Jewel, Sorana. The mission was unmanned and carried the prefabricated supplies including habitats, lab equipment but also longer term food and medical supplies. Leviathan I was to ensure that the vessel heading to Sorana for Leviathan II in 2077 would be laden with additional equipment, including vehicles and spare parts. By sending the main cargo first, the Leviathan II space vessel, a Union designed and built ship known as Beacon would be then capable of additional crew bringing the total crew count of the first manned mission to Sorana to 12.

The Commonwealth Space Program’s Administrator Collin Briggs announced previously that there had been a transponder issue rendering the mission outcome unknown. At this time the CSP has announced the total loss of the Leviathan I mission as well as the majority of the cargo. The Hydra Rocket appears to have been unable to meet sustained thrust in order to slow on reentry and the chute deployment was unable to slow the rocket down enough to avoid an explosive impact.

Already members of Congress across party lines are calling for an immediate inquiry into the failures of the mission, the loss of the cargo, the failure of the boosters to slow the rocket enough to avoid the outcome, as well as the ultimate question of what does this mean for Leviathan II? The public and across cable media voices are being raised that the loss of the mission could cost the Commonwealth its lead on getting to Sorana with the first humans before the Valentian Alliance could. Frustration abounds.

Others are now questioning the potential safety of the Hydra Rockets produced by the Union company MacKenzie Aerospace. The company maintains that the rockets have a near perfect record for flight on Vesta and Apollo and that missions beyond always carried a risk of unknown and uncontrollable factors. The CSP announced a review of using Hydra rockets for Sorana in the future pending the outcome of the review.

Egian Archipelago Plebiscite Rejected
In a shocking last minute move, the Synedrio backed by the outgoing Archon Lydia Galanis has ruled the outcome of the Egian Archipelago’s plebiscite on remaining part of the Empire or joining the Union to be invalid under a national security law from 2029. The law known as the Egia Security Protocol states the government has no authority to divest territory that could be deemed strategically necessary to the ongoing business of the Mydic Empire. As such it has become the position of the Archon that the islands do in fact represent a “strategic asset” the Empire is not in a position to part ways with at this time. She further pointed to the margin of the vote as simply not enough to truly feel how the entirety of the Archipelago’s public feel and that those that were either too young, wrong citizenship or otherwise to vote would be capable of closing that gap.

The response from the public was immediate though the divide fell on party lines. The ruling National Conservatives plus the far right National Front voted overwhelmingly with few defections to rescind the vote. At this time the national Supreme Court is set to hear the challenges to the law in the morning and already the Social Democrats and New Dawn Parties have said they will join the legal challenges and that if they win a majority they would restore the original outcome.

The Imperial Palace condemned the actions of an outgoing government already in the act of campaigning to undertake such a potentially disastrous decision that would have repercussions not just to the Empire but on the Empire’s name. Basileus Leto was said to be outraged upon being informed and immediately issued the following statement;

“It is with the most profound confusion and frustration that we stand with the people of the Empire and with those that had chosen to depart our family for one they chose to be adopted by. This injustice cannot go unanswered and the people of the Empire of all creed, type and background should fill the streets and show the Galanis administration and their parties that the Mydic Empire will not be held as a liar and a weasel.”

The Administration has declared a curfew in all major cities in anticipation of protests as well as suspending the regional administration of the Egian Islands. Archon Galanis said the national curfew will extend from sundown to sunrise for one week. The announcement by the government also stated that there would be an increase of Mydic military presence on the islands in order to dissuade the Union or any outside entity from attempting to seize the islands through force.

While the new law leaves open the possibility of another plebiscite it is vague on when that would be carried out and what the timeframe would be. The Empire has reaffirmed that the decision has been taken in line with the ongoing policies of the Imperial State and that the old 2029 Law had been on the books and was public record. Archon Galanis also pointed to the Union’s own acceptance of the agreements to hold the plebiscite in the first place and those included the ability of the Empire to rescind the vote within a timely manner if it was so deemed a national security priority. Following the bombings in Mydare it has become doubly clear that the islands are crucial to the long term stability and safety of the Empire.

Mydia Steals the Vote!
Following a late night vote of the Mydic Synedrio backed by the outgoing Archon Lydia Galanis, the Egian Archipelago's vote to return to Union hands has been rejected. Their vote has been stolen, they are disenfranchised. The Republic won’t stand for this kind of barbaric lie. All across social media and cable news, the pundits and the trolls abound in bashing Mydia and the VA for this kind of treachery. Already throngs of people have poured onto the streets of the Union’s largest cities demanding the return of the islands, by force if necessary.

The State Police presence outside the embassies in Columbia and consulates in New Haven, Braxwell and Central City have been heavily increased with some describing the diplomatic zone as preparing for a siege. Travel curfews have been enacted in most major cities across the Union in preparation for the sometimes violent outpouring of emotions exhibited in the Union.

President Prescott has vowed that the Union will not kowtow to the will of some foreign Empire in this matter as the people of the Archipelago have spoken and with that voice they chose the Union, not the Empire. As such President Prescott has announced the immediate deployment of the 1st and 2nd Fleets to the Archipelago in complete expectation for this matter to be resolved as swiftly as possible. This action while heavily anticipated in such a circumstance was long thought to be a "nuclear" option in terms of severity as it sets up the two for a possible clash.

The Union’s position is clear. It will not accept anything less than the return of the islands now that the referendum found in favor of rejoining the Union. The scenes on the islands themselves are said to be utter chaos as people scramble to the air ports and maritime ports to flee, anticipating a possible rehashing of the Egian War of the early 2040s. Neither government has ruled out the use of force at this time. Panic, general commotion and sense of utter disbelief are the words being used to describe the once island paradise.
