The People's Republic of Diamatiya

40 years ago, the vile fascist Bachir Gemayel was "elected" president of Lebanon on the backs of Zionist tanks. The Zionist entity was attempting a plan that had been talked about decades prior by people like David Ben-Gurion and Moshe Dayan: occupying and eventually annexing the south of the country, which had already been underway for several years, and installing a friendly, pro-Western, Maronite government in Beirut that would sign a a peace treaty. The invasion was arguably an experiment for American regional plans that would later crystallize in the invasion of Iraq 21 years later.

The combined forces of leftists, Islamists, the Palestinian factions, and the Syrian army successfully prevented the IOF from entering the besieged West Beirut for three months. The city was subjected to savage siege warfare and continuous attacks from land, air, and sea. But in the end, the PLO (which I am personally rather critical of, but that's for another time) agreed to leave Lebanon under the supervision of the Western Multinational Force in Lebanon. The resistance to the Zionist occupiers continued, and would progressively force them to withdraw until they were restricted to their "security belt" which lasted until the victory of 2000.

In any case, Bachir and several dozen of his followers were killed when the Phalange headquarters in East Beirut was blown up on September 14 by the hero Habib Chartouni, himself a Maronite and a follower of the SSNP. That was the Phalangists' pretext for the Sabra and Shatila massacre, the most notorious episode of a chapter of history that deserves a lot more attention.

I've been reading a lot about the agrarian question lately, and I can't help but think most people don't fairly analyze the Khmer Rouge. It's just too easy to say that they were backed by the CIA, and were overthrown by the "good communists". Thoughts?

Of course I'm being serious! What led me to start thinking about it was the fact that Khieu Samphan was an old associate of Samir Amin, and Amin himself upheld the Khmer Rouge at the time. My opinion is that the Khmer Rouge were ahead of their time with regard to the importance of socialist ecology, and that it's valuable to have their experience to draw conclusions and lessons from.

This has the same energy as "Sure Hitler may have done some bad things, but hey, he made the autobahn, so at least he was efficient."

An interesting analysis of the Houthis and an anti-capitalist dimension to them, thank you for this.

The Yemeni Civil War has gotten my attention alot, its so weird how rarely anyone talks about the Houthi movement, either in a positive or negative light, outside of Saudi Arabia. It also surprises me how anyone rarely talks about the Southern Movement and the possibility of a reviewed ML state, and I'd like to know your opinion on them.

Though, I am a bit nervous saying anything positive about the Houthis due to their "Curse the Jews" cry. Israel I get, jews in general, not so much.

As far as I know, the Southern Movement isn't in any way Marxist-Leninist. They're backed by the UAE and have clashed at times with Hadi's Saudi-backed forces, in addition to the Houthis. They notably control Socotra Island, which I've heard has sort of become an Emirati-Israeli tourist colony.

I see that lots of familiar faces have migrated to this region from TCB and TLA.

It's at least good to see this region grow, considering that its the intellectual vanguard of NationStates!

My main critique of Chinese foreign policy post-Mao is how they no longer seem to be actively committed to proletarian internationalism i.e no longer actively aiding Communist parties throughout the world, no longer actively aiding revolutions in the Third World, and oftentimes picking the wrong side over the other. This is the main divergence bet. Maoist and post-Mao foreign policy.

One of the examples where this is the most clear is in the Philippines. Currently in the Philippines, the CPP (Communist Party of the Philippines) is fighting a people's war against the fascist regime of Marcos-Duterte. Guess which side the CCP supports and sent arms to?

There is a really clear and thick line between realpolitik and pragmatism, and actively helping Communists get wrecked.

Thank you for the kind words! We've seen ourselves as a basically a cadre-oriented region for a while now, growing our community through ties to other regions and committed comrades we meet through them rather than traditional recruitment. The solidarity this region showed for TI after the original founder there was deleted is what got me to come here initially.

This criticism is counterposing choices made in very different situations. It doesn't engage with how the world has changed, namely the collapse of the international communist movement by the 90s and the globalization of supply chains, where decisions in Mao's time established the basis of China's integration into said supply chains. China becoming the world's workshop, love it or hate it, (until recently) limited adversaries' aggression towards them while they developed at the cost of limiting China's foreign policy and of course gross exploitation of Chinese workers by western MNCs. China decoupling from western economies or returning to a more domestic focus in the future will open more avenues here.

China certainly could do more to help communists internationally, but in places like the US where our movement is so shaky who should they support? Would materially or even simply in rhetoric officially supporting various progressive movements here even have a positive effect? If BLM figures had been welcomed to meet Chinese state figures like China did with the Black Panthers it's reasonable to expect state repression of these movements would intensify sharply along with Sinophobia. In many countries even outside of the west their local communist organizations are likewise so weak that China's support no matter how well-intentioned could backfire.

Let's look at the Philippines specifically. The CPP is listed as a terrorist group by the US; it's not unlikely the US would immediately sanction China if they were to support the CPP simply in rhetoric. Let's say China just doesn't care about losing access to various markets and decides to start arming the CPP - would it even be able to turn the tide in the people's war? Are arms truly the decisive limiting factor for the CPP right now? Do you not expect to see the US and EU start increasing arms sales to the government in the absence of China and an immediate inflaming of domestic repression of left-leaning folks as well as ethnic Chinese people? Let's go even further and suggest they send PLA troops to assist the NPA - I can't see the Philippines becoming another Ukraine-like proxy war where the US uses your countrymen to bleed a competitor as a positive thing.

Where I'd like China to be more forthright is in supporting existing socialist states as well as projects trending in this direction like Venezuela, Bolivia, etc. Basically progressive movements in environments where China getting involved isn't going to create more conflict are ones they should support as much as possible. That China didn't veto various sanctions against the DPRK in the UN or more openly oppose NATO's war against Libya was despicable and represented an outdated mindset within China that gave too much credence to pseudo-international institutions and "playing by the rules" so to speak, a lifeboat many in China gripped onto tightly after the collapse of the USSR. A good side to the recent aggression being shown to China by the west is that this will likely push China in being more "reckless" in supporting these projects.

To pick a stark example of bad foreign policy among many in Africa from China in Mao's time, they supported UNITA alongside the US and apartheid South Africa in the Angolan Civil War because of Mao's petty foreign policy line against the USSR, the same year he met with Ford and Kissinger. As I mentioned there definitely was a moderation that happened over the years but this hard line drawn between China's foreign policy with Mao and post-Mao is much less clear than you present. Obviously this doesn't completely invalidate Mao/China for me and I'm aware there's MLMs who condemn this Three Worlds Theory from Mao, but it's superficial really, just a softening of the positions rather than challenging its premises.

Hey comrades, we voted a while back to change how NSLeft's Central Committee works, moving to a model where each region has two representatives rather than everyone across NSLeft voting for specific individuals. We're finally getting around to doing this and as such North Korea needs two people willing to stand for this position. It's important that anyone wanting this role has a Discord account to interact with others in NSLeft and the CC. If you're interested in this position please reply on the RMB; I'd love to see someone other than myself in this role and will set up a vote if we have more than two folks interested.

I'll volunteer. I check discord regularly enough that I can vote and weigh in on CC discussions on behalf of our region.

I want to be up front though and say that real life time constraints mean I probably won't take a leading role on CC projects, but I'm willing to do as much as my time allows.

This speech was given before the DPRK's 74th anniversary recently and holds some interesting developments, some selections of which I've quoted below. This is the first time Kim Jong Un has referenced a "multipolar world" as far as I know.

Respected Comrade Kim Jong Un Makes Policy Speech at Seventh Session of the 14th SPA of DPRK

...The higher the stage of socialist construction for achieving the independence of the masses reaches, the greater the challenge and resistance by the imperialists become.

As long as imperialism, whose inherent nature and means of existence is aggression and plunder, exists, the source of war cannot be rooted out, and antagonism and struggle between socialism, which aspires after independence and peace, and imperialism is unavoidable in the development of history.

Therefore, it is a crucial and vital requirement in achieving a steady development and prosperity of socialism that conditions and an environment that allow no aggressive threat be created; to this end, we should possess an absolute strength with which we can definitely overwhelm the enemy.

...

Our Republic, as a citadel of the anti-imperialist struggle and a fortress of socialism, resolutely promoted the construction of a self-reliant national defence capability according to its own timetable in the face of intervention and pressures by the hostile forces of all hues. By doing so, it put an end to the era when the US imperialists unilaterally imposed nuclear threat.

And today it has accomplished the historic cause of making a permanent legal confirmation of the law of the policy of the nuclear forces.

...

As long as there exist nuclear weapons and remains imperialism on the earth, and as long as the United States and its vassal forces refuse to stop their anti-DPRK manoeuvrings, our journey of building up the nuclear forces will not come to an end.

Our Republic's nuclear forces represent the destiny of the country and the people and their lasting prestige–this is our steadfast stand.

We have drawn the line of no retreat regarding our nuclear weapons so that there will be no longer any bargaining over them. Herein lies the great importance of the legalization of the policy of the nuclear forces.

The event has made the peace-loving stand of the government of our Republic and our policy of the nation's nuclear forces more transparent and justifiable.

It is a desire of humanity to live in a peaceful world free from aggression and war.

Yet, peace does not come of its own accord simply because they are desirous of it; it is something that we can achieve and defend only when we are strong enough to contain the imperialist tyranny.

Our Republic's legalization of the policy of the nuclear forces constitutes a righteous blow to the imperialists who are violating and disrupting the right to independence and peace.

Our Republic's nuclear forces exist and will come into use to defend our territory, people and self-respect and global peace and security from the imperialist tyranny, and not to pursue intervention in the internal affairs of other nations or hegemony. Accordingly, they in no way pose any threat to those nations and peoples that are friendly to us and desirous of peace.

...

The present international situation shows that the contradictions between justice and injustice and between the progressive and the reactionary, especially the power structure surrounding the Korean peninsula, have become obvious and the change from a unipolar world advocated by the US into a multipolar world is being accelerated significantly.

Our Republic will develop foreign relations proactively in line with the development trend of the current international situation and its position as a powerful independent country.

The field of external affairs should invariably hold fast as the foremost mission of the diplomacy of the Republic to the defence of the dignity of our Party, the enhancement of national prestige and the championing of national interests and settle issues arising in international relations in the interests of our revolution.

It should develop external relations in a many-sided way as it further expands and develops friendly and cooperative relations with neighbouring countries and collaborates with all countries and nations opposing and rejecting the imperialists' aggression and interference, domination and subordination and aspiring after independence and justice, regardless of differences in ideology and system.

Along with this, it should try to find a way of making diplomatic efforts for developing multifaceted exchanges and cooperation with capitalist countries that respect our country and are friendly to it.

In order to build on today's proud victory to achieve a greater victory in socialist construction by carrying out the aforementioned tasks facing the government of the Republic, we should thoroughly establish the Party's unified leadership system in state building and activities.

...

Officials who are leading members of the revolution should have extraordinary ideological preparedness and determination and make strenuous efforts all alike.

In our society, officials should become servants in the true sense of the word.

The word official is not something related to any honour or authority, and the worth of existence of officials is unthinkable separated from their natural mission of serving the people.

If officials enjoy a comfortable and luxurious life, it is not socialism at all and it brings greater trouble to the people.

All officials should never forget that their positions require them to shoulder heavier burdens and work harder for the Party and revolution, and the country and people and should be boundlessly faithful to their duties always feeling oppressive and an acute sense of responsibility without taking their eyes off even for a moment.

When there is a new job to be done, they should not evade it or take a stopgap measure, but take the lead in it as they work out a detailed plan, command the work and throw themselves to it with the trait of setting personal examples to bring about good results.

They should heighten a sense of responsibility and increase their role in work, constantly cultivate their mind and morality to live honourably before the Party and people and become truly necessary officials who know nothing but the revolution and work and can fulfil their duties flawlessly.
