Official Voting Recommendation

Proposal Title: Protecting Free, Open Source Software Use
Category: Free Trade
Strength: Significant
Proposed By: Clever homo sapiens
Purpose: A resolution to reduce barriers to free trade and commerce.

Our Recommendation

The Ministry hereby recommends that all WA nations vote AGAINST the current General Assembly proposal at-vote.

Rationale & Analysis

While noble in its attempt to protect people in their access to software, particularly of the open-source variety, we find this proposal to be lacking in a number of areas.

Not only do creators of open-source software make up a small portion of the populations in member states, but the actual effectiveness of these supposed protections can be called into question due to the lack of restrictions placed on what’s considered a creator’s work in relation to what’s considered free for public use.

Moreover, in light of this, we believe the proposal’s strength indicator and/or category to be incorrect. It’s listed as “Significant” despite its aforementioned lack of regulations and restrictions on what is actually considered a protected FOSS. At best, it is the opinion of the Ministry that this should be considered “Mild,” and even then the proposal would need to demonstrate why this an international issue worthy of the General Assembly’s attention.

As such, Ministry leadership has directed Kethania to vote AGAINST “Protecting Free, Open Source Software Use” and we encourage all WA member nations within the Bloc to do the same.

Voting in the World Assembly helps our voices be heard. Since we're a leftist region, it's especially important that our WA residents take the time to advocate their positions on proposals that affect us all. Voting in accordance with the Ministry's recommendation helps our voices come across clearer to the world at-large, and it also helps the region by ensuring that our votes go further than they would if only the Delegate were to vote.

If you have any questions about this recommendation or the Ministry's work, please do not hesitate to contact me (104 partisans) via telegram or Discord DMs. Thank you!
