Germany comes to my mind, often wiped their feet on it and put them on their knees, over and over again.
The invaders and oppressors were themselves captured and oppressed. I don't feel sorry for them, they got what they deserved.

China has been great for centuries.

France has played an important role in European history. All it's shame is a few military failure, which can be overshadowed by it's glorious cultural stuff and progressive (by the standards of the times) politics, and military victories too.

For me Germany was only humiliated because it lost 2 wars. But Germany's history was not humiliated... it was tarnished.
