The hard-nosed, cynical population of 1.239 billion Z80ians are ruled with an iron fist by the socialist government, which grants its people the freedom to do whatever they like so long as it doesn't involve getting richer than anybody else or challenging the government.

The medium-sized, liberal, socially-minded government juggles the competing demands of Defense, Law & Order, and Industry. The average income tax rate is 32.9%, but much higher for the wealthy.

The sizeable but sluggish Z80ian economy, worth 25.8 trillion guilders a year, is quite specialized and led by the Book Publishing industry, with major contributions from Soda Sales, Trout Farming, and Gambling. Black market activity is frequent. State-owned companies are common. Average income is 20,799 guilders, and distributed extremely evenly, with practically no difference between the richest and poorest citizens.

Machine-peeled candied grapes come in individual packaging for the busy commuter, children regularly take part in blood sports that result in extreme boo-boos, the government has been criticized for giving away Z80's territory to anyone who claims it, and the Hanging Gardens account for half of Z80 City's water use. Crime is almost non-existent, thanks to a well-funded police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Z80's national animal is the squirrel.
