The Republic of Wedgenia is a huge, safe nation, renowned for its state-planned economy, compulsory military service, and punitive income tax rates. The hard-nosed, cynical population of 584 million Wedgenians are ruled with an iron fist by the dictatorship government, which ensures that no-one outside the party gets too rich. In their personal lives, however, citizens are relatively unoppressed; it remains to be seen whether this is because the government genuinely cares about its people, or if it hasn't gotten around to stamping out civil rights yet.
The large, socially-minded, well-organized government juggles the competing demands of Defense, Administration, and Law & Order. The average income tax rate is 53.4%, and even higher for the wealthy.
The sizeable but sluggish Wedgenian economy, worth 14.6 trillion Dinars a year, is driven entirely by a combination of government and state-owned industry, with private enterprise illegal. However, for those in the know, there is a slick, highly efficient black market in Beef-Based Agriculture, Tourism, Automobile Manufacturing, and Retail. The private sector mostly consists of enterprising ten-year-olds selling lemonade on the sidewalk, but the government is looking at stamping this out. Average income is 24,996 Dinars, and distributed extremely evenly, with practically no difference between the richest and poorest citizens.
Wedgenian politicians are often described as having more style than substance, Wedgenia has designated Wedgenia City as its capital city, one does not simply walk into the tundra, and convicts get out of jams easily. Crime, especially youth-related, is totally unknown, thanks to a well-funded police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Wedgenia's national animal is the Wedger.
Wedgenia is ranked 274,553rd in the world and 13th in The New Beltics for Most Cultured, scoring 59 on the Snufflebottom-Wiggendum Pentatonic Scale.
