The Democratic Republic of
New Phyrreus

The Democratic Republic of New Phyrreus, referred to usually as New Phyrreus, is a Democratic Republic located in North Amerika. It is bordered to the north by the Arctic Ocean, the east by the Atlantic Ocean, the west by the Pacific and to the South-east by the Caribbean Sea, as well as sharing a land border with the amalgamated South Amerikan states. A gargantuan nation, New Phyrreus has a total land area of 24,709,000km2, and a growing population of over 8 billion citizens.

New Phyrreus was originally inhabited by nomadic hunter-gatherer tribes, until around 20,000BCE, and the advent of the first early settlements. During the next few millenia the area grew into small, warring city states. Trading cultures, especially of pottery, weapons and spice, thrived. It was not until 1CE, the end of the Unification War, that all of these states were united under a single flag, New Phyrreus. This marked one of the first 'golden ages', which brought significant economic and technological advances. Despite external threats, New Phyrreus survived as a single nation and emerged as a major world power.

New Phyrreus is a highly developed nation, ranking highly with a GDP of over $1000 trillion, and a per capita GDP of $124,663. With abundant natural resources and government incentives, the booming economy is highly specialized. It is led by private sector arms manufacturing, with major contributions from book publishing, technology and tourism. New Phyrreus ranks highly in political freedoms and civil rights, with freedom of speech being held as sacred principle. The nation is a member of the World Assembly, and is a major influence in the North Pacific.

Etymology

Phyrreus was originally one of the first major city states to exist on the continent. A Phyrrean-led alliance of nation states came to victory in the War of Unification, eventually leading to all states under the banner to call themselves 'Phyrrean' (the individual city states are represented on the national flag via 16 five-point stars). The demonym for the people of New Phyrreus is 'Phyrrean'.

History

Archaeological evidence suggests that the continent was inhabited approximately 120,000 years ago, during the last ice age, by small nomadic hunter-gatherer communities. Only around 20,000BCE, were the first settlements established - usually primitive fishing or trading villages - located on or near rivers, lakes or coastlines. The advent of large scale agriculture, the invention of the plough around 11,000BCE saw settlers move inland. The first large city states sprang up around 3000 BCE, with nations such as Coronus, maintaining large kingdoms through trade and war. Phyrreus at this time was a small north-eastern trading town, largely exporting pottery, lumber and weaponry to these city states, in exchange usually for military protection. As a result, Phyrreus remained largely intact, while other states fragmented, were destroyed or were simply swept up in large scale conflict.

A modern depiction of Severus
at the battle of Kethion 19BCE

By 40BCE, Phyrreus came into conflict with the Mylaen empire; a militaristic state originating from the lush forests of the central highlands. An aggressive period of expansion by the Mylaen despot Meridias IV, had conquered many city states and began infringing into Phyrrean territory. Phyrreus' small but professional garrisons, had quickly been overwhelmed. A campaign by Phillipus II, saw 25,000 Phyrrean soldiers killed at the Battle of Degai, in 39BCE, and Phyrrean territory pushed back almost to the East coast. Such was the cost of the victories in Phillpius' campaign, they are believed to have given rise to the phrase 'phyrric victory'. An impromptu meeting of the Ecumene - an early attempt at a unified intergovernmental organization, was unsuccessful in stopping the Mylaen threat. Successive campaigns saw heavy losses, and ultimately it is believed Phillipus was assassinated, in order for his more experienced nephew Severus to attain power. Several city states; Mythria, Kessus and Delacuse soon allied under Severus, all eventually calling themselves 'Phyrrean'. He led several campaigns against the Mylaens, his third and most successful ending with the Battle of Kethion in 19BCE, in which he routed and destroyed a numerically superior force of 90,000 Mylaen troops. After 35 years of warfare, the venerable Severus led a coalition force against the city of Mylae, slaughtering its inhabitants and razing it to the ground. The end of the War of Unification, saw all sixteen city states united under the flag of 'New Phyrreus', with Phoenicius I (Severus' son) as it's first emperor. This period also marked the beginning of the first Phyrrean 'Golden Age', with significant advances in the sciences, mathematics, medicine, philosophy and art.

NPS Valiant during trials,
June 1850

1705 was the start of New Phyrreus' industrial revolution, it's second 'golden age', with the abandonment of the empirical hegemony system, and its replacement with a democratic republic. Matteus XII was deposed in a militaristic coup, and governance of the nation fell to his senate, known as the 'first republic'. They founded a new Phyrrean constitution, known since as the Lexus Cannonicus. Capitalist enterprise sprang up, and was encouraged with progressive government reforms. By 1760, agriculture was primarily industrialized, and iron was replacing marble and granite as a more pragmatic building material. 1848 witnessed the launch of the NPS Valiant, the first steam powered, iron-clad warship. Thousands of kilometres of railway was laid across New Phyrreus with the advent of steam locomotives, revolutionizing commerce and communication across the country.

New Phyrreus became a major power in the world, maintaining its presence within its far-flung principalities through its fast naval task groups and rapid reaction forces. Its global economy allowed it to gain influence on the international stage, and it holds a reputation of a 'peacekeeper', with its military deployments in aid of anti-terrorist operations. The New Phyrrean Space and Aeronautics Agency (NPSAA) was founded in 1951, sending the nation's first satellite into orbit in 1954, followed by its first manned mission in 1959, and its first lunar mission in 1965. It became a member of the World Assembly in 2012, and holds high influence within the North Pacific. The launch of Aldrus Station - named for one of the first Phyrreans to visit the lunar surface - in 2034 marked a significant achievement in the nations technological development. The Stanford-Torus type station is 400m in diameter, and was constructed in geosynchronous orbit over the course of a decade. It remains New Phyrreus' premier center for zero-gravitic and astronomic research.

Geography

New Phyrreus' incredibly diverse geography

New Phyrreus encompasses an area of 21,500,000km2, making it one of the largest nations in the world. It has a varied climate, with a subtropical, Mediterranean climate across the south west coast, with a colder oceanic climate in the north west. The gulf coast areas are humid-tropical, and often experience hurricanes. The mid-south is highly arid, with the great basin areas experiencing temperature extremes of >50 degrees. Mid-western areas are largely flat, arable land, but experience many of the world's tornadoes and thunderstorms. Further north the climate is continental, with high moisture. In the far north, the climate is sub-arctic to polar, with temperatures often reaching -35 degrees.

New Phyrreus' topography is also highly varied. The coastal plains of the east coast give way to large deciduous forests, and the hills of the Aresian mountain range. Further west lie the great steppes, flat and arable grassland. Toward the Pacific coast, Olympian mountain range crosses the country from North to South, reaching heights of around 4,000m, before dropping relatively steeply toward the low, arid desert of the south and the west coast. Northward lie the Great Lakes; Pellenos, Lacos, Huros, Oranos and Majellanos, and large expanse of deciduous forest. The northern plains are primarily arctic tundra, with coniferous forested regions and large glaciers.

Reflecting the diversity of the nation, is New Phyrreus' animal life. The great plains were the habitats of large herds of bison and wild horse, before over-hunting and domestication took a steady toll. Though the western deserts are relatively devoid of animal life, dingo packs and abundant reptile life exist there in a harsh ecosystem, (The Dingo being introduced by Pacific tradesmen). Further north sees abundant ornithological life; multiple Pacific seabirds and further inland, predatory birds. Bears and large mammals are common within Phyrreus' large forests, along with wolves and sub-arctic foxes. In Phyrreus' polar regions, Polar bears and extensive seal colonies inhabit the coastline. Further south, New Phyrreus' humid swamps are known for sightings of larger reptiles such as alligators, while the tropical seas of the South are renowned for their diversity of undersea life.

Demographics

New Phyrreus has one of the highest populations in the world, at over 7.8 billion (as of 2015). A census is taken every ten years, since beginning in 140CE. While New Phyrreus has a relatively low fertility rate of 12 per 1000, the population grows at around 1.9%, given net immigration (legal or otherwise). The country is classed as a stage 4 nation within the Demographic Transition Model, though the establishment of population control measures may soon develop into a stage 5.

Population distribution of New
Phyrreus and surrounding provinces

The largest ethnic group are White Phyrrean, but this only makes up for 13.8% of the population. Though everyone within the nation technically identifies as a 'Phyrrean', ancestry groups are dictated by the city states a person's ancestors identified from. The other primary ancestry groups being; Mythrian, 9.7%; Delacusean, 8.3%, and Coronussian, 6.7%. There is debate over the true boundaries of the territories of city states, and many people chose to identify as 'bi-ancestral', or simply refer to themselves as Phyrrean.

Phyrrean English remains the de facto national language, but the influx of foreign migrants throughout history, this has meant a diversity in languages spoke. English is the first language in approximately 78% of the nations inhabitants, with Spanish contributing 13%, French 8.6%, and other languages 0.4%.

Though the Lexus Cannonicus guarantees all citizens religious freedom, many Phyrreans choose not to identify with faith, with 41.5% declaring themselves as 'atheist' or 'agnostic'. 53% of people when asked also answered that religion was not an important part of their lives, and indeed church attendance numbers have fallen steadily over recent years. Still, 36% are Christians, first brought to New Phyrreus by Western Missionaries in 736CE. 11% are of the Roman Catholic faith, primarily due to an increase in Catholic migrants from South Amerika and Western Europe. 11.5% collectively follow other religions, including but not limited to: Islam, Hinduism, Judaism, Sikhism and Buddhism.

Government

Since the deposition of the monarchy during the Reformation in 1705, New Phyrreus has been a democratic socialist republic. The New Phyrrean Parliament is a bicameral legislature, with two houses; the upper 'Senate', and the lower 'Council'. Government control over the nation is sub-divided among the lines of the old hegemonic city states, with each appointing their own Senators and Councillors. These themselves are then divided into districts, each run by a local 'Conclave'. New Phyrreus is a primarily two party system, with the Phyrrean Socialists (PSP) and the Conservatives the majority holders. On an international scale, New Phyrreus is a member of the World Assembly, and its delegates are appointed by the Senate. It also an influential member of the North Pacific given its geographical location

Council Chambers in Phyrreus

The Senate consists of 50 members, and acts in an advisory role to the president. Each state elects two senators, regardless of population, who serve staggered six year terms, with the remaining 18 members being elected military officials. A more deliberative atmosphere sees the Senate referred to as the 'upper-house', with Senators having to have served at least 4 years in the Council and in the military. The Senate appoints a 'speaker', who recognizes Senators and begins debate. The responsibility of the Senate generally is the appointment of high ranking officials; military officers, judicial officers and presidential candidates; as well as passing litigation on foreign and military policy. They hold the power to veto bills passed by the Council, and during periods of emergency can overrule the Council entirely (though following this period the senate must resign.)

The Council is the 'lower-house' of parliament, with 400 members elected apportionately based on their state's population, (New Phyrreus controls the majority with 76 members) though each state is guaranteed at least 2 Councillors. The Council's procedure is similar to that of the Senate, with a Senate elected speaker to begin debates, though the atmosphere is generally more partisan. The Council passes litigation that concerns nationwide revenue and taxation, with each Councillor allowed a voice on the floor. Council officials serve four year terms.

At more local levels, the nation is divided into 16 city-states, Phyrreus being the largest, led by a Regional Assembly of district appointees and Councillors. These in turn are divided into districts, governed by a local 'conclave' of elected officials, who appoint Councillors, members of the Regional Assembly, and maintain the district. The Conclaves are responsible for their emergency services and health facilities, as well as the upkeep and maintenance of local infrastructure. Conclaves can impose independent taxation, though within guidelines, though they are restricted from imposing new laws within their districts.

The New Phyrrean economy is a global leader, with a nominal GDP of over $1000 trillion, and a per capita GDP of $124,000. The government adopts a widespread policy of business subsidy to stabilize market fluctuation, increase consumer confidence, and encourage overseas investments. The economy is mostly privatized, with around 56% of income originating from the private sector. New Phyrreus is a net exporter of goods, with one of the largest trading surpluses in the North Pacific. Trading weapons, computer technologies and fossil fuels usually in exchange for chemicals, pharmaceuticals and luxury goods.

Secondary industries like arms manufacturing have historically lead the New Phyrrean economy, accounting for almost 32%. With companies such as Armatech Ltd. providing high-quality weaponry, vehicles and equipment to militaries around the world. Tertiary and Quaternary industries such as book publishing and Information Technology also give major contributions, especially as New Phyrreus is among the world leaders in developments for computers, medical equipment and communication. Tourism is now also a rapidly growing industry in New Phyrreus, with almost 37,000,000 international visitors last year alone, and providing for roughly 3.7% of national employment.

Unlike many other advanced countries, New Phyrreus has seen an increase in its Primary Sector. Despite the replacement of fossil fueled cars and power stations with hydrogen and nuclear, billions of tonnes of coal, oil and natural gas are exported annually. Natural resources, especially timber and stone are abundant in the North, and are also largely exported. Fishery protection and farming have also led to the increase in food exports.

Military

The New Phyrrean Armed Forces comprise the independent branches of the Army, Navy, and Air Force. A current active force of 15 million personnel is administered by the Department of Defense, headed by the General Staff and by the appointed Secretary of Defense. Currently, defense spending constitutes 58% of all government spending - around $130 trillion. As a result, New Phyrreus has one of the largest armed forces and military budgets in the world. The Armed Forces are responsible for the defense of New Phyrreus, her colonies and her allies, as well as international peacekeeping efforts and disaster management. They are active participants in the World Assembly, as well as the North Pacific. A mandatory period of military service of no less than five years is law in New Phyrreus for all able-bodied civilians from 18 years of age. Following this, all citizens remain on reserve until the age of 49.

Army

The New Phyrrean Army consists of around 5 million current active personnel, organised into five field armies, 20 corps and over 100 legions. The Army's primary responsibility is security, and New Phyrreus maintains garrisons at the local and regional level across its colonies. Each city state maintains a local corps, headquartered within regional boundaries. Legions are the backbone of the Phyrrean Army, with approximately 50,000 troops and independent artillery, transport and administration units. Army doctrine is based on rapid, surgical strikes against vital enemy targets. Once this is achieved, gains are consolidated through the use of rapid-reaction airborne forces, or fast armoured battalions. Fireteams are linked through the BattleNet System - an integrated tactical command system, which relays information to Command Units. This allows military commanders to effectively co-ordinate unit actions; the precise location to deploy troops or strike at enemy weak-points. This also allows fireteams to identify themselves as part of the larger offensive, request fire support, pinpoint location and proceed toward objectives.

Navy

The Navy is the largest branch of the New Phyrrean Armed Forces, consisting of 7.5 million active personnel and operating 870 bluewater-capable vessels. The Navy projects New Phyrreus' power across the world, each of its 14 carrier task groups can reach any coastal destination on the planet in under 10 days, and each carries two marine legions and a full aircraft wing. Like the legion to the army, these task groups are the mainstay of the Phyrrean Fleet. With a Supercarrier at their core, they are made up of around 50 vessels; accompanying warship screens, amphibious transports and logistical ships.

In wartime, it is the navy that is responsible for the policing of New Phyrrean waters, as well as the transportation of materiel for foreign shores. Combat Air Patrols and picket corvettes are maintained around each group, and are usually accompanied by one or several nuclear submarines. ASW engagements are carried out by specialized VTOL aircraft and fast attack by ASW frigates, using ASROC munitions. Surface engagements, though rare, see UAV attack aircraft swarm enemy ships, a CAP is maintained, followed by long range attack by advanced guided missile destroyers and cruisers.

Air Force

The Air Force is New Phyrreus' primary defensive branch. 2 million active personnel maintain over 200 facilities and airbases. WARMAP satellite, ground and airborne passive radar systems project a comprehensive map of Phyrrean airspace, and squadrons can be scrambled against intruders from a comprehensive command and control system. SAM and anti-ICBM systems are also operated by the air force, and linked to WARMAP and satellite triangulation can hit supersonic targets with incredible precision. The Air Force operates in excess of 23,000 aircraft - from fifth-generation strike fighters to strategic bombers; AWACS aircraft to re-fuelling tankers. Offensive air-force operations consist of aerial support for ground and naval operations; fighter cover and low-level tactical strike missions; strategic bombing and military airlift. The Air Force also carries out many humanitarian missions - transporting medical supplies, food, water and agricultural equipment to disparate areas, and aiding in evacuation efforts.

Culture

Despite the incorporation of the many city states under the Phyrrean banner, each has retained an individual 'identity', and as a result Phyrrean culture is highly diverse. Throughout its history, New Phyrreus has retained a militarized culture and ethos, and this is reflected through its society. Individually, Phyrreans are often known for their martial attitudes. Military service and service for the betterment of the nation is ingrained in culture, with family structures especially, stressing discipline and order. This, combined with a tabooed view on social welfare and strict policing have created stereotypes of Phyrreans as 'cold and calculating'. Despite this though, the nation is known for its many creative and often unorthodox art and media works.

Food

Phyrrean cuisine is a 'melting pot', of various cultural dishes, usually characterized by sharp flavor and use of spices. Local states contribute their own customary cuisine, generally centered around their most abundant foodstuffs, with each town or village producing its own recipes, and many brewing their own brand of wine or beer. For example many northern states are known for their seafood dishes, being large fishing communities, whereas southern regions are famous for spicy cuisine, with influence from South Amerikan cultures. Western regions, with their Mediterranean climate are renowned for wine making and fruit cultivation, while states near or on the steppes primarily create unique breads and vegetable dishes. Meat is a staple part of New Phyrrean food, with consumption of beef, pork and lamb increasing by 32% over the last 20 years, and taking up almost 60% of total agricultural production.

Sports

Sport is highly popular throughout Phyrrean society. The most popular spectator sport continues to be rugby, attracting over 1.3 billion spectators each year, and is played from the international to amateur local level. Other popular sports include football, basketball, cricket, tennis and golf. New Phyrreus has sent teams to compete in every event in the Olympics, with Phyrrean athletes wining over 3,600 gold medals. It has also hosted the games on four occasions, the most recent saw the 2032 Olympics held in Aegeus. The south-west coast is a worldwide popular location for watersports, with surfing championships held annually. Winter sports such as skiing, snowboarding, bobsledding and luge are hugely popular in Northern Phyrreus, the Olympian mountain ranges have hosted the Winter Olympics several times.

Literature and the Arts

Literature and art enjoyed a great upsurge in popularity with the beginning of the Second Golden Age. The beginning of the Phyrrean 'Romantic' period saw writers, poets, musicians and philosophers publish many classical works. Poets like Poldarch (1689-1753), found a huge market with the lower-classes, producing escapist works cheaply and in large quantities. Writers such as Reyschus (1712-1780), and Aeschel (1708-1770) with controversial works on politics and religion, were key figures in the period of Phyrrean enlightenment.

Theatrical works existed early in Phyrreus, with the earliest amphitheatre at Kalsus dating back to 700BCE. Ancient theatre attracted crowds of small thousands, with producers vying to outdo one another with ever more zealous effects (indeed the advent of gunpowder in the 1400s saw many fatalities amongst actors). Actors often grew to achieve national fame, especially as the theatre grew in popularity. Hundreds of works, usually concerning Phyrrean leaders, (but also comedies, tragedies and heroic epics) were produced; Matteus IX, Severus, Henrius IV, Phoenicius III.

New Phyrreus' renaissance in particular produced many legendary works and artists. Vincius (1478-1546), and Micharo (1501 - 1579) revolutionized artistic technique and direction, and brought national attention toward art. Vesalius (1489 - 1533) was famed for his paintings of the human form. Galleus (1453 - 1512), painted many beautiful works of celestial bodies and astronomical phenomena. The second golden age saw an upsurge in great artistic pieces, with painters like Martinus (1680 - 1753) and Haro (1693 - 1767) revolutionizing artistic techniques, and arguably beginning the Phyrrean abstractionist movement.

Infrastructure

Daedalus International Airport, Aegeus

Transport

New Phyrreus' road network consists of some 7.5 million kilometres of road, of which approximately 1.8 million kilometres is the Phyrrean Motorway System, used by around 1.2 billion vehicles. There are also 2 million kilometres of maglev railway, operated primarily by the state owned rail business InterRail, as well as smaller privately operated sections under state contract. The majority of rail journeys are primarily for logistical and cargo freighting, though the number of rail passengers increased by up to 30% since 2040. Inner-city transport largely consists private and state-owned maglev monorail systems, seeing around 1 billion passengers each year. New Phyrreus operates over 21,000 airports in its territory. Of these however, only 7,600 are paved, and an even fewer number, 560, hold regularly scheduled flights. New Phyrreus handles anywhere up to 150,000 flights per day, with around a third being commercial flights. Phyrreus International, one of the world's largest, covers 5,700ha and handles over 100,000,000 flights each year.

Aquitas Hydro-electric dam project

Energy

Energy consumption per capita stands at 8.4 tonnes of oil equivalent per year, one of the world's highest. Despite this, New Phyrreus is considered a world leader in sustainable energy, as around 80% of this power is supplied by renewable sources. By 2030, 48% of the nation's energy came from nuclear, 26% from hydrogen, and 6% from wind, solar and HEP sources, with the remainder supplied by oil, coal and natural gas.

Much of Phyrreus' transport infrastructure is hydrogen powered, with the passing of the Sustainable Fuels act 2017. Fossil fuel-powered automobiles were gradually phased out in favor of hydrogen powered vehicles over twenty years. 96% of road vehicles, 86% of watercraft and 38% of aircraft are currently hydrogen powered. Despite this, New Phyrreus remains a primary exporter of coal, oil and natural gas - possessing large deposits in the Parsaen Gulf, and the Northern Steppes. Petroleum production as of 2045 stands at 168 million barrels monthly; natural gas production at 1.5 million cubic ft; and coal extraction at around 120,000 tons; most of which is exported.

Science and Technology

New Phyrreus is a highly scientifically advanced nation, indeed government spending on research and development totaled over $1.2 trillion since 2043. It is a world leader in scientific developments, with notable research into fields of physics, mathematics, chemistry, biotechnology, medicine, aerospace and robotics.

Aldrus Station, launched in 2034

Space

The New Phyrrean Space and Aeronautic Agency (NPSAA) operates a highly active space program, with over 300 flights since its founding in 1951, including 80 manned flights. It was one of the first to successfully launch and operate a satellite - Spurius, in 1956 - and one of the first to conduct a manned lunar mission - with the Atlas 11 in 1965. NPSAA probe flybys and landings have transmitted data on many celestial bodies within the Solar system with Odysseus I, to XI; and one probe - Pytheas - became the first NPSAA craft to cross the 'termination shock', the boundary between the solar system and interstellar space. Currently the NPSAA's largest achievement was the launch of Aldrus Station, at the L5 Lagrangian point between the Earth and Luna. A Stanford-Torus Station, it was constructed in orbit over 7 years by 68 shuttle flights. It is one of the world's premier centers for zero-gravitic and astronomical research, maintaining an active crew of over 250 astronauts.

Medicine

Medicine provides New Phyrreus one of its primary areas of research. Since the use of early anesthetics during the War of Unification, scientific advancement in the field of healthcare has resulted in the discovery or numerous pharmaceutical agents and surgical techniques. Medical advancement soared during the enlightenment period - the first vaccines for smallpox appeared in 1745 and the discovery of infection causing bacteria in 1799 led to the first antiseptics. Antibiotics - in the form of penicillin - arrived in 1928, as well as the discoveries of 'silver bullets' to treat various diseases such as scarlet fever. Subsequent conflicts also resulted in the first cases of plastic surgery to treat burn victims, along with the first transplant surgery and the use of x-ray photography. Modern medical research has led to the invention of cybernetic augmentation - many without vision have begun to trial 'bionic eyes', and neural implants are often used to treat sufferers of Parkinson's Disease and Dementia.

Miltary

New Phyrreus is renowned for its highly-advanced military research and arms manufacturing. Headed by the Special Research and Projects Agency (SRPA), it was one of the first countries to detonate nuclear weapons. Beginning with with the 40 kiloton Ares Uranium-Fission Weapon in 1944, as well as one of the first to test a Hydrogen-Deuterium Thermonuclear device in 1959. Since, it has led the way in the development of sixth-generation fighter and UAV systems, as well as the integration of sophisticated battlefield virtual intelligence and swarm intelligence systems. Key weapons developments also include the early usage of plasma-based weapons, such as the AeroSPace Interception System (ASPIS), in the detection and destruction of potential ICBM threats, as well as prototype plasma weaponry distributed to infantry units.
