The rapid rise of fascism in this country grows more apparent and disturbing every day. Direct action is the only way to stop this, voting alone isn't nearly enough. Biden and the Democrats are completely weak and ineffectual, and are unwilling to do anything about this. Every woman in the U.S. should take to the streets in a general strike and bring this entire country to a grinding halt until this ruling is reversed, and the Supreme Court expanded so that this cannot continue. This is only the tip of the iceberg - conservatives want minority groups to suffer and will stop at nothing to get their way. I absolutely see the point. Why is anyone supposed to stay and fight if there are better alternatives out there? I respect anyone who suffers from discrimination or whatever and stays and tries to change the system but I have no less respect for anyone who decides that the suffering has to end. Our government here in Britain are rewritting the human rights laws to limit EU judge's power after they ruled exporting immigrants to Rwanda is a breach of human rights. The decision to flee or fight should be up to each individual. Fixating on the “honorable fight” and wagging your finger at your fellow oppressed people to be used as foot soldiers really isn’t something I can get behind. In any case, the United States is an empire with a presence globally, so in a manner of speaking, there truly is no running away from its hegemony. But individuals fleeing a proto-fascist regime that is step by step preparing for a g*nocide against queer people and other minorities isn’t cowardly or traitorous. There’s more than one way to help in the struggle and that shouldn’t be limited to staying in a situation where one’s life is in imminent danger. Not to mention the long term effects on one’s physical and mental health from enduring such an ordeal. Not everyone is meant to stay and fight on the front lines. In any case, the only way we’re getting out of this mess is with international solidarity. I’m no expert on history or theory, but I think I can pretty confidently say that the US probably isn’t going to change course without some international pressure. Millions of women in America have lost access to fundamental health care today. It has been decreed that the states can force women to bear children against their will. Even if you were told to expect and accept this outcome, nothing prepares you for the sting when it dropped. Can we tolerate the fact that ALL women and girls now face being treated and legally classified as nothing more than breeders for men and a male supremacist society? Can we tolerate the terrible future for all people in this society that this ruling opens the door to? For make no mistake, the logic that overturned abortion can be used to “justify” going after the rights of LGBTQ people, including marriage equality, as well as inter-racial marriage and even the right to use birth control. Amen, comrade. Too many people are planning this and it's going to be a mass exodus. This isn't just a few people looking out for their lives, it's become a political statement to plan to leave the US. It isn't survival for many, many people who say these things are plenty well off and are going to get one anyway. I understand your point completely, but you gotta remember this; Fascism cannot hold, it is the acceleration of capitalism and after the darkest days, a socialist and better America might come. Or maybe not, I'm not a prophet. |

Fortunately, it seems like the other Republican judges are not going quite so far at the moment, so it remains to be seen if those cases are really overturned in the near future. The danger always looms, however. |
I would just like to say that as the son of two American immigrants to Canada that the decision to leave the US because of its politics is not black and white in the slightest. My parents were both devoted socialists when they lived in the states and were lifelong members of the DSA, and they used their jobs as social workers to try and better the lives of people around them to the best extent possible. However, they decided to move to Canada to try and escape the country's oppressive political system. They continue to be politically active in this country and in the states, as do I, and they are certainly not cowards for leaving. I fear for the future of my country. Although I knew, and everyone knew, the intentions of the Supreme Court in advance, I was not prepared for the statements which followed. Judge Clarence Stevens, Republican Justices, and the GOP as a whole are a stain on the history of America, and do not stand to uphold the so called freedom of which they lust. I fear, alongside many Americans, and people around the world, that a second shot has rung around the world, and has plunged itself deep into the heart of democracy. A shot that will be marked in history, alongside events far worse and yet to come, as the rise of a fascist America, and the death of true freedom around the world. |
Caveat: The USA was never a democracy in the nuanced sense of the word.
