Muslims are cool but Kalam was not actually very religious, and in his 'the wings of fire' he clearly states that a hindu sanyasi had counselled him after he wasn't able to join the IAF. That, and back in 1947 and 1965 when we fought against the pakistanis, many muslim components in various regiments had mutinied and in certain cases has outright betrayed their brothers and went over to the other side. That's why there's only 30000 muslims in the army, they were untrustworthy. Not to say all muslims are bad, for example Brigadier Usman was one of the greatest military heroes of India, and same goes for Abdul Hamid, amongst many others.

Yeah Kalam wasn't exactly a religious muslim, and had a pocket Bhagwad Gita as well.

Most likely its higher but Armed Forces does not keep a headcount of personals on the bases of religion
