Series of quakes hit Selika, no casualties reported
SELIKA- The metro system and some schools in Artaska's largest city, Selika, were evacuated Thursday following a series of powerful earthquakes that struck the coast of the country. An initial 5.3-magnitude quake hit western Artaska this morning 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) west-northwest of Pretkalniņš. While the epicenter was 90 kilometers northeast of Selika, the quake was felt strongly in the city, sending people running from buildings in a panic. At least nine aftershocks have been reported since the initial quake, including one as strong as 5.7, and all at a shallow 10 kilometers deep or less. There are no immediate reports of casualties or damage, but firefighters said that heavy snow blocking roads to some affected areas has hampered their initial assessment. Disaster authorities in Selika said they had been inundated with hundreds of calls from residents. Officials have begun looking for cracks and damage to structures in the city, many of them ancient and vulnerable from previous tremors.

President Emin Bisliev was in Allengin, Elbresia, where he told journalists no victims had been reported in what he described as a “difficult day for our country. But continuous quakes of such a scale are alarming for the people repeatedly hit, and it’s something the government is dealing with,” he said. “We are strengthening the deployment of the army to the affected areas, and we’re monitoring the situation minute by minute.”

Artaska, and Western Nortua as a whole, is highly prone to earthquakes. In May, a 6.4 magnitude tremor left 22 dead in Selika. In 2021, a large 8.4 magnitude quake between Beatavic and Artaska left more than 2,000 dead. But most prominently, in November 2023, a 9.0 magnitude quake off the coast of the Pian Islands triggered a massive tsunami across the Konkurso Gulf region, leaving more than 40,000 people.
