I grew up hearing my Dad laugh like that. I’m used to his laughter and liked it. As far as I know, only me and my brothers have a Dad who laughed like that. :)

Commentary: The Security Council wants to Commend an invader with a heart of gold. Sorry, no, we stopped reading when we got to the griefer part (read: invader). No Stars. NewTexas will go on record as AGAINST on this Resolution. This is only the opinion of NewTexas. We look forward to other Texans' opinions and comments on this Resolution. If good arguments to the contrary are made, we will reconsider our position.

The Texas response was flat on the last SC vote -- Condemn Civil Defence Siren -- which was defeated after gaining only 13.1% of the vote. As a reminder, all we are looking for is a simple 10% of Texans to say one way or another. We are a force for change in the WA. Every vote counts! There were 3 publicly-expressed opinions on the last Resolution with the final Texas tally running 0 FOR and 3 AGAINST and 0 ABSTAIN and 0 UNDECIDED. Texans were unanimous! Yay!

Today is

National West Virginia Day:

National West Virginia Day on March 22 recognizes the last state to be created from one of the original thirteen colonies.

When Virginia voted to secede from the Union, Western Virginians held firmly to their Union loyalties, created their own constitution and approached Congress for statehood. West Virginia, the 35th state, was admitted to the Union in 1863. It was the only state formed from another state and one of two created during the Civil War.

The original thirteen colonies created a total of eighteen states. Vermont once was a part of New York. Kentucky was also once included in the colony of Virginia. Tennessee was formerly part of North Carolina. Maine and Massachusetts were joined at one time.

At Harpers Ferry, the North meets South. From John Brown’s rebellion to Stonewall Jackson’s Confederate victory, Harpers Ferry is ripe with abolition movements and Civil War History.

Also known as The Mountain State, West Virginia is dominated by three magnificent mountain ridges. The Allegheny, Appalachian and the Blue Ridge Mountains also provide the state with seventy-eight percent forest over its total terrain. Within the rugged mountains, massive amounts of bituminous coal stores have made West Virginia the largest producer of coal west of the Mississippi River.

Not only do the West Virginia hills create spectacular views and jobs, but their natural landscape lends to small, isolated populations with deep roots. Their culture and heritage can be heard infused in the thrum of a banjo or the lyrics of a gospel chorus. It also influences the warm earthy flavors of their cooking and inspires artisans to masterpieces.

Life moves at a slower pace in West Virginia. Time doesn’t exactly stand still, but if you’ll sit a while and listen to some of the folk stories, you might hear about John Henry and Big Ben Mountain. Someone could take you mushroom hunting, or they might fry up a few and share with you what they found that morning. Not very many are willing to give up their favorite hunting spots.

You could get invited to the largest festival in West Virginia, Bridge Day. It takes place at New River Gorge Bridge on the third Saturday of October. The bridge was completed on October 22, 1977, and it’s the longest steel arch bridge in the western hemisphere.

National Bavarian Crepes Day:

March 22nd marks the annual observation of National Bavarian Crepes Day.

National/International Goof Off Day:

National Goof Off Day is observed annually on March 22. Our research indicates that this day is also known as International Goof Off Day.

It is a day to relax, enjoy and goof off. Do something fun and leave the work until tomorrow. Everybody needs to take a break from time to time. It is often so easy to get so involved in the work and pressures in our lives. So stop, take a break, find something different!

Let any goofy idea pop into your head. Make paper airplanes from seed packets. Doodle pictures of poodles in puddles in Peru. Play a game of Jenga with randomly stacked spice jars. Or do the obvious and spend the day in your pajamas doing nothing.

Monica (Moeller) Dufour of Davidson, MI founded National Goof Off Day. According to official records, the first celebration took place in 1976. In an interview with the Detroit Free Press in 1983, Moeller suggests the first event may have been a few years later. Whenever the inaugural day took place, it’s no surprise National Goof Off Day was created by a kid with the direction to do things out of the ordinary.

March Madness was pretty mad or maddening in the Round One for the nine Texas brackets, two Forest nations and one unknown participating! There were five RL Texas teams going in and there are three coming out of some furious b-ball. Houston, Texas Tech, and Baylor are still representing. Currently in sole possession of first place, with an outstanding 24 of 32 correct picks, is the ancient nation of Rorschach! One of the two Indian Empire brackets is tied for second with Matthew, our returning unknown who claims to not know what they are doing. Shout out to Matthew - what is your nation name? Trecdom is holding down sole possession of fourth place. This is where it gets complicated. We have a four-way tie for fifth place with Meowser of Furry felines, Lt. Gov Hiram of Studly Penguins, Chief Justice D R Pepper of Gig em Aggies and a friend from Forest's nation, Terropo, all pulling in 21 of 32 correct picks. Ninth place is another set of multiples with NewTexas, Boozylvania and Turbeaux of Forest. Sweeping the gutter in unlucky 13th place is another of Indian Empire's science experiment brackets. Go back to what you know IE. There were some major upsets in the first round with one #4 seed out and all #8 seeds out in an odd turn of events. No #1, #2 or #3 seeds are out yet. None of those losses were bracket-busters. Onto Round Two!

National Near Miss Day:

A massive asteroid (4581 Asclepius) nearly hit the earth in 1989. This day is commemorated annually on March 23 as people across the nation celebrate National Near Miss Day.

On March 22-23, 1989, a mountain-sized asteroid came within 500,000 miles of colliding with the earth. “On the cosmic scale of things, that was a close call,” said Dr. Henry Holt. Geophysicists estimate that collision with Asclepius would release energy comparable to the explosion of a 600 megaton atomic bomb. On March 31, 1989, nine days after its closest approach to Earth, the asteroid was discovered.

A collision would have had catastrophic effects on our planet.

There have been other “near misses” that have happened on an infrequent basis.

National Corn Dog Day:

In March every year, a popular food of sports fans, concert and fairgoers alike are enjoyed with ketchup, mustard or even plain. It’s National Corn Dog Day.

The corn dog started out as a sausage or hot dog baked or deep fried in a cornmeal breading and served as a sandwich. In the late 1930s or early 1940s, this sandwich became a convenient fair food when the whole meal was put on a stick before being deep fried. Fairgoers could then eat their corn dog while taking in the exhibits.

The convenience of the corn dog and other fried foods on a stick continues today. From sports arenas to amusement parks, state fairs and concerts, Americans can get their corn dogs and dipping sauces to go and not miss out on a moment of the game.

Created in 1992 by Brady Sahnow and Henry Otley in honor of the saving grace of corn dogs and the March Madness that is basketball.

Melba toast was named after Dame Nellie Melba, the stage name of the Australian opera singer, Helen Porter Mitchell. The singer was quite popular with chef Auguste Escoffier of the Savoy. It is believed he created not just this “diet” toast for Ms. Melba, but a famous dessert as well.

Aeroflot Flight 593: 23 March 1994 Russian Airbus A-310 crashes in Siberia

The plane that crashed was the Aeroflot Flight 593 and as an Aviation Enthusiast, Armchair/Flight Simulator Pilot and Armchair Accident Investigator, I will never forget this particular plane crash because the reason why this plane crashed was incredibly asinine. The relief pilot was Yaroslav Vladimirovich Kudrinsky. Relief pilot Kudrinsky was taking his two children Eldar and Yana on their first international flight, and they were brought to the cockpit while he was on duty. He should not have allowed them to handle the controls but he did. His son Eldar caused the autopilot to partially disengage and that was what caused the crash.

What Happened To Aeroflot Flight 593:

On 23 March 1994, the jet aircraft was en route from Sheremetyevo International Airport in Moscow to Kai Tak Airport in Hong Kong with 75 occupants aboard, of whom 63 were passengers. Most of the passengers were businessmen from Hong Kong and Taiwan who were looking for economic opportunities in Russia.

The captain of Flight 593 was Andrey Viktorovich Danilov, 40, who was hired by Aeroflot in November 1992. He had accrued over 9,675 hours of flight time, including 950 hours in the A310, of which 895 hours were as captain. The first officer was Igor Vasilyevich Piskaryov, 33, hired by Aeroflot in October 1993, who had 5,885 hours of flight time, including 440 hours in the A310. The relief pilot was Yaroslav Vladimirovich Kudrinsky, 39, who was hired by Aeroflot in November 1992; he had over 8,940 flying hours, including 907 hours in the A310. Kudrinsky also had experience in the Yakovlev Yak-40, Antonov An-12, and Ilyushin Il-76. There were nine flight attendants on board the plane.

With the autopilot active, Kudrinsky, against regulations, let the children sit at the controls. First, his daughter Yana took the pilot's left front seat. Kudrinsky adjusted the autopilot's heading to give her the impression that she was turning the plane, though she actually had no control of the aircraft. Shortly thereafter, Kudrinsky's son Eldar occupied the pilot's seat. Unlike his sister, Eldar applied enough force to the control column to contradict the autopilot for 30 seconds. This caused the flight computer to switch the plane's ailerons to manual control while maintaining control over the other flight systems. A silent indicator light came on to alert the pilots to this partial disengagement. The pilots, who had previously flown Russian-designed planes which had audible warning signals, apparently failed to notice it.

Eldar was the first to notice a problem, when he observed that the plane was banking right. Shortly after, the flight path indicator changed to show the new flight path of the aircraft as it turned. Since the turn was continuous, the resulting predicted flight path drawn on screen was a 180-degree turn. This indication is similar to those shown when in a holding pattern, where a 180-degree turn is required to remain in a stable position. This confused the pilots for nine seconds, during which time the plane banked past a 45-degree angle to almost 90 degrees, steeper than the design allowed. The A310 cannot turn this steeply while maintaining height, and the plane started to lose altitude quickly. The increased g-forces on the pilots and crew made it extremely difficult for them to regain control. The autopilot, which no longer controlled the ailerons, used its other controls in order to compensate, pitching the nose up and increasing thrust; as a result the plane began to stall; the autopilot, unable to cope, disengaged completely. A second, louder indicator light came on to alert the pilots of the complete disengagement, and this time they did notice it. At the same time, the autopilot's display screen went blank. To recover from the stall, an automatic system lowered the nose and put the plane into a nosedive. The reduced g-forces enabled Kudrinsky to re-take his seat. Piskaryov then managed to pull out of the dive, but over-corrected, putting the plane in an almost vertical ascent, again stalling the plane, which fell out of the sky into a corkscrew dive. Although Kudrinsky and Piskaryov regained control and leveled out the wings, they did not know how far they had descended during the crisis and their altitude by then was too low to recover. The plane crashed at high vertical speed, estimated at 70 m/s (14,000 ft/min). All 75 occupants died from the impact.

The aircraft crashed with its landing gear up, and all passengers had been prepared for an emergency, as they were strapped into their seats. No distress calls were made prior to the crash. Despite the struggles of both pilots to save the aircraft, it was later concluded that if they had just let go of the control column, the autopilot would have automatically taken action to prevent stalling, thus avoiding the accident.

The wreckage was located on a remote hillside in the Kuznetsk Alatau mountain chain, approximately 20 kilometres (12 mi) east of Mezhdurechensk, Kemerovo Oblast, Russia; the flight data recorders were found on the second day of searching. Families of western victims placed flowers on the crash site, while families of Chinese victims scattered pieces of paper with messages written on them around the crash site.

The events of Flight 593 were featured in "Kid in the Cockpit", a Season 3 (2005) episode of the Canadian TV series Mayday (called Air Emergency and Air Disasters in the U.S. and Air Crash Investigation in the UK and elsewhere around the world). The flight was also included in a Mayday Season 6 (2007) Science of Disaster special titled "Who's Flying the Plane?"

Investigation / Findings:

2 Hours after the crash the search was begun to locate the crash of Flight 593. It was soon clear there were no survivors of the crash putting the total of fatalities to 75 people. Initial speculation was that it was a form of terrorist act, but was soon ruled out after the analysis of the cockpit voice recorder. The Russian government authorities conducted the investigation and determined that the main cause of the crash was due to pilot error.

-The poor decision made by the Captain to allow his children to be at the controls and manipulate the aircraft even though the aircraft was on autopilot was a key factor that leads to the crash.

-The lack of authority shown when the aircraft was beginning to lose its direction was another element that should have been addressed.

-Complacency with the condition of the flight as well as not following protocols in the situation experienced further doomed the flight.

-The crew’s unfamiliarity with the foreign built Airbus A310, the crew of Flight 593 was not aware of an aspect to the aircraft, that when force was enforced on the controls that the auto pilot will partially disengage, without a warning sound.

Morals of the Story/Lessons from this Incident:

1. Children do not belong in the cockpit of an aircraft and should therefore not be allowed to be there.
2. Do not allow your children to pretend to fly the plane if you are the pilot.
3. If you are piloting a new type of plane and are unfamiliar with it, you must learn everything you can about the plane and become familiarized with the controls before the scheduled flight.

Cookies-and-Milk Cheesecake Brownie Bars (Betty Crocker)

Triple-layered lusciousness, all in one bar: Brownies on the bottom, creamy cheesecake in the middle and tender chocolate chip cookies on top.

Brownie Base:

1nbox (1 lb 2.3 oz) Betty Crocker™ fudge brownie mix

1/2 cup vegetable oil

3 tablespoons water

2 eggs

Cheesecake Layer:

2 packages (8 oz each) cream cheese, softened

3/4 cup sugar

2 eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla

Chocolate Chip Cookie Layer:

1 pouch (1 lb 1.5 oz) Betty Crocker™ chocolate chip cookie mix

1 tablespoon Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour

1/2 cup butter, softened

1 egg

Directions:

1. Heat oven to 350°F. Grease bottom only of 13x9-inch pan with shortening or cooking spray.

2. In large bowl, mix Brownie Base ingredients until well blended. Spread in pan. Bake 20 minutes.

3. Meanwhile, in large bowl, beat cream cheese with electric mixer on medium speed until smooth. Add sugar; beat until blended. Add 2 eggs and vanilla; beat just until blended. In medium bowl, stir together chocolate chip cookie mix and flour. Add softened butter and 1 egg; stir until soft dough forms.

4. Spread cheesecake layer mixture over hot brownie base. Drop teaspoonfuls of chocolate chip cookie dough over cheesecake layer.

5. Bake 35 to 40 minutes or until cookie is golden brown. Cool 1 hour. Refrigerate at least 3 hours before cutting and serving. Cut into 6 rows by 5 rows. Store covered in refrigerator.

Water, vegetable oil and eggs called for on brownie mix box for cakelike brownies

1 package (8 oz) cream cheese, softened

1 cup powdered sugar

1 container (12 oz) Cool Whip™ frozen whipped topping, thawed

1 1/2 cups finely crushed Oreo™ chocolate sandwich cookies (about 16 cookies)

2 boxes (4-serving size each) Jell-O™ chocolate-flavor instant pudding and pie filling mix

3 cups cold milk

Topping:

1/2 cup coarsely crushed Oreo™ chocolate sandwich cookies (about 4 cookies)

Directions:

1. Heat oven to 350°F. Spray bottom only of 13x9-inch pan with cooking spray.

2. Make brownie batter as directed on box for cakelike brownies. Spread in pan. Bake 22 to 25 minutes or until toothpick inserted 2 inches from side comes out almost clean. Cool completely, about 1 hour.

3. In large bowl, beat cream cheese and powdered sugar with electric mixer on medium speed until smooth, scraping down side of bowl frequently. Beat in 2 cups of the whipped topping. Spread over brownie. Sprinkle 1 1/2 cups finely crushed cookies over cream cheese mixture.

4. In medium bowl, beat dry pudding mixes and milk with whisk about 2 minutes or until thick. Spread over cookie layer. Drop remaining whipped topping by spoonfuls over pudding layer; spread evenly. Cover and refrigerate 4 hours.

5. When ready to serve, sprinkle 1/2 cup coarsely crushed cookies on top. Cut into 6 rows by 4 rows. Cover and refrigerate any remaining pieces.

Filling:
3 oz (from 8-oz package) cream cheese, softened
1/2 cup canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie mix)
1 egg
3 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Brownies:

1 box Betty Crocker™ Supreme original brownie mix
Water, vegetable oil and eggs called for on brownie mix box

Steps:

1. Heat oven to 350°F. Spray bottom only of 9-inch square pan with cooking spray. In medium bowl, beat Filling ingredients with electric mixer on low speed until smooth. Set aside.

2. Make brownie batter as directed on box. Spread 2 1/4 cups of the brownie batter in pan. Spoon filling by tablespoonfuls evenly over batter. Spoon remaining brownie batter over filling. Cut through several times with knife for marbled design.

3. Bake 38 to 42 minutes or until toothpick inserted 2 inches from side of pan comes out almost clean. Cool 30 minutes on cooling rack. Refrigerate about 2 hours or until cooled completely. Cut into 4 rows by 4 rows. Store covered in refrigerator.

Expert Tips:

You can freeze leftover pumpkin in an airtight container for your favorite recipes. Just thaw and stir before adding.

Chunky Cheesecake Brownies (AllRecipes)

Ingredients:

1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
1/4 cup white sugar
1 egg
1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
1/4 cup butter
1/2 cup white sugar
2 eggs
2/3 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 9-inch square baking pan.

2. Combine cream cheese with 1/4 cup sugar and 1 egg in a mixing bowl; beat until smooth. Stir 1 cup chocolate chips into the cream cheese mixture. Set aside.

3. Fill a saucepan with water and bring to a boil. Turn the heat off, and set a heatproof mixing bowl over the water. In the mixing bowl, combine butter with the remaining cup of chocolate chips; stir until just melted and blended together. Stir in the remaining 1/2 cup sugar and 2 eggs, then sift together flour, baking powder, and salt; stir into chocolate until evenly blended.

4. Pour half of the batter into the prepared baking pan. Spread the cream cheese mixture over the chocolate layer. Top with remaining chocolate mixture (this doesn't need to completely cover the cream cheese layer). Using a knife, swirl the top chocolate layer into the cream cheese to make a marble pattern.

5. Bake in preheated oven at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 25 to 30 minutes, or until top is crinkled and edges pull away from sides of the pan. Cool thoroughly. Cut into 12 to 16 squares. Store in the refrigerator or freeze.

Tip:

Parchment can be used for easier cleanup/removal from the pan.

2. Whisk melted butter with 1 cup sugar in a large mixing bowl; stir cocoa, red food coloring, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, vinegar, and salt into butter mixture one at a time, mixing well after each addition to avoid lumps. Stir 2 eggs into mixture until thoroughly combined.

3. Stir flour into cocoa mixture just until combined; set aside 1/4 cup batter. Pour remaining batter into the prepared baking dish.

4. Beat cream cheese in a bowl using an electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy; beat 1/4 cup sugar, 1 egg, and 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract into cream cheese until very well blended and only small lumps remain, 3 to 4 minutes.

5. Spoon cream cheese mixture in dollops over the batter in pan; gently smooth tops of dollops even with batter using a knife or offset spatula. Do not overmix. Drizzle reserved 1/4 cup of batter over the dollops of cream cheese mixture. Drag a knife or skewer through the batter and cream cheese mixture to create swirls.

6. Bake in the preheated oven until a toothpick inserted into the center of the pan comes out clean, 30 to 35 minutes. Cool completely before cutting into bars; store covered in refrigerator.

Cook's Note:

The fluffier and smoother you can get the cheesecake mixture, the easier it will be to spread. I think this is best served the next day!

Why World Tuberculosis Day is Important:

Many people still suffer from tuberculosis:
It may seem like an outdated disease, but around one-third of the world’s population is infected with tuberculosis. It’s estimated that 2 billion people have tuberculosis. In 2016, 10.4 million people contracted TB, and there were 1.7 million TB related deaths.

It’s closer to home than you’d think:
Although TB is a bigger problem in third world countries, its impact stretches closer to home than you might think. In 2014, there were 9,412 new cases of TB in the United States. In 2016, Tuberculosis was reported in all fifty states, with California, Texas, New York, and Florida topping the list.

We can stop TB:
Due to its outdated misconception, tuberculosis is not seen as a relevant issue. Spreading awareness about the disease can help those at high risk seek treatment. If those who are likely to be affected get vaccinated, the disease could be eradicated, and we could see an end to tuberculosis in our lifetime.

International Day for the Right to the Truth concerning Gross Human Rights Violations and for the Dignity of Victims:

The right to the truth is often invoked in the context of gross violations of human rights and grave breaches of humanitarian law. The relatives of victims of summary executions, enforced disappearance, missing persons, abducted children, torture, require to know what happened to them. The right to the truth implies knowing the full and complete truth as to the events that transpired, their specific circumstances, and who participated in them, including knowing the circumstances in which the violations took place, as well as the reasons for them.

Each year, on 24 March, the International Day for the Right to the Truth Concerning Gross Human Rights Violations and for the Dignity of Victims is observed.

This annual observance pays tribute to the memory of Monsignor Óscar Arnulfo Romero, who was murdered on 24 March 1980. Monsignor Romero was actively engaged in denouncing violations of the human rights of the most vulnerable individuals in El Salvador.

The purpose of the Day is to:

1. Honour the memory of victims of gross and systematic human rights violations and promote the importance of the right to truth and justice;

2. Pay tribute to those who have devoted their lives to, and lost their lives in, the struggle to promote and protect human rights for all;

3. National Chocolate Covered Raisin Day:

Raisins coated in a shell of either milk chocolate or dark chocolate have their special day of honor each March 24 on National Chocolate Covered Raisin Day.

Chocolate covered raisins have been popular with moviegoers for many, many years and they continue to be. They are also a conventional bulk vending item across the country.

More than 1 million Raisinets are produced per hour.

In some countries, chocolate covered raisins are known as Raisinets. Raisinets were the earliest and one of the most popular brands of the product. Currently made by Nestle, they are the third largest selling candy in United States history. The Blumenthal Chocolate Company introduced the Raisinets to the United States in 1927, and then in 1984, the brand was acquired by Nestle. There are also a large number of other brands of chocolate covered raisins on the market.

Raisins are an excellent source of calcium, potassium, iron, fiber and vitamin B. When you combine the raisins with dark chocolate, you have a great tasting, healthy snack.
