Yeah I'm glad I switched majors from petroleum and natural gas, that business is far too unreliable. A few of my friends work for Exxon and their departments were all gutted.

Indeed, it's why I joined the military, I have all the money I want, but now I just need a good pension and something stable.

You should look into doing energy audits somewhere, it's very consistent work and with a general technical background you're sufficiently qualified.

Also, on the map, are the islands circled in black actual nations or are they just like, idk how you’d describe it, NPC nations? Uninhabited named islands? And is the canal territory owned by a specific country or is it like shared by all the nations, like free land

Bit complicated. They're all known as bolded territories and all of them act as NPCs. Unless they have () after them, they are not owned in-character by anyone in particular. Often someone out of character will look after the nation's factbooks and get it involved in roleplay.

Eg) Gresswell Island (AIN) on the map is Gresswell Island, which my nation in-character owns and I manage out of character
vs
Keverai with no brackets is on the map, which I manage out-of-character.

It's also important to note that there's two unofficial types of bolded territory
1. the older more established ones that tend to be independent nations or have larger back stories to them (eg. San Javier, Charbagnia, Keverai, Illa Isle)
2. the newer less established ones that tend to be uninhabited or loosely held by someone and have shorter back stories to them. This second type normally has standards a lot lower as far as asking people for permission to do stuff (Eg Southpaw, Sawneeak, Mesderina, The Oasis). This second type typically have lower standards as far as interacting with them goes and are designed so they can switch hands quicker.
