It has been one month since the Aurelian Republic opened for business, and if the founding fathers were expecting a quiet settling-in period, nobody told the House of Representatives.

Thirty-three nations now call Aurelia home, with ten embassies signed and presumably several more in that "we should really get around to it" stage every region's diplomats know well. The Constitution, once just an ambitiously long forum post, has spent its first month actually being used - which, by the standard of founding documents everywhere, already puts it ahead of schedule.

The House's proposed Standing Orders have been on the table for a little while now - the rulebook that will decide how bills get introduced, debated, and voted on going forward. Discussion so far has been, let's say, cosy rather than crowded. Which is understandable for a body barely a month old, but also means there's a genuinely open invitation here: the floor is quiet, and it won't stay that way once more Citizens find their way to it.

Meanwhile, the President has not been sitting still. The Government Departments Act (2026) - establishing Homeland Security, Foreign Affairs, Culture, Heritage and Communities, and the Treasury - is currently before the House of Representatives, awaiting its turn once the Standing Orders debate wraps up. It won't be heading to the Senate any time soon, mind you, on account of there not being one yet - that requires an electoral law the Republic hasn't written, and, if we're honest, probably a few more Citizens than currently fit around the table.

And speaking of politics - the Republic now has its first political party. The Democratic Party launched this week with a leader, a platform, and an open door, courtesy of one Cassius Wren, who founded it, leads it, and - as it happens - also currently occupies the Presidency. Which makes it, for the moment, both the governing party and the only party, a distinction it will presumably enjoy for exactly as long as it takes someone else to disagree with it hard enough to start a second one.

It hasn't all been paperwork this month, either. Aurelia held its first-ever Question of the Week - fly, or breathe underwater - and, in a result that will surprise nobody who's ever watched a small group of people try to agree on anything, it's currently tied 1-1. Democracy in miniature, really.

Thirty days ago, none of this existed. Now there's a rulebook on the table waiting for someone to properly dig into it, a Cabinet waiting to be assembled, and a governing party with its name already on the door - which, all things considered, sounds a lot like a republic finding its feet.

The Rostra will be back next month, assuming the House hasn't argued itself into a procedural coma by then.
