WA Affairs (GA) - FOR Repeal "Sustainable Fishing Act"

This present repeal targets
GA#199 "Sustainable Fishing Act", which aims to prevent exploitation and depletion of key populations of aquatic animals. However, the repeal makes several key arguments. It argues that the provided definition of 'overfishing' is weak and open to alternative interpretation, and similarly that the implementation of an exemption for the control of 'invasive species' allows for formally prohibited actions to be classed as legal if any part of said action falls under the exemption. Furthermore, the existing restrictions are based solely on the manner of fishing, without any manner of tailoring to a specific scenario, making the resolution both shockingly blunt and weak simultaneously.
While we of course stand behind initiatives for greater global sustainability, it is clear that
GA#199 does not meet the high standard for a resolution that by its own estimation affects “important sources of food, economic growth, and revenue for many nations and their people”. This, combined with the existence of broader legislation that ensures continued and strengthened protection for affected species (such as GA#465, GA#403, GA#725, and GA#409) means that we are content with the lack of a planned replacement for this proposal, and are assured that protections for aquatic life will continue, but without the pointless stipulations enforced by GA#199.For these reasons, we recommend voting FOR Repeal "Sustainable Fishing Act".
