Equilar Factbook [WIP]

The Federation of Equilar, commonly called Equilar, is a country in The Western Isles. It is bordered on the east by Segentova, to the north and west by unclaimed territory, and to the south by its coastline. Equitar covers 72,984 square kilometres and has has a population of roughly 3 million. Equilar comprises of 8 provinces and 3 territories.

A large amount of Equilese culture is impacted by the mix of Anglo-French cultures, their interactions with the native peoples of Equilar, and neighboring nations.

Etymology

The name came from the Spanish Empire who discovered the land. They needed to come up with a name for the territory, and settled for "Ecular." It is a portmanteau of Spanish "ecuador" (equator) and "largo" (long). This name comes from the fact that they thought that they were near the equator, and discovered a lot of long beaches along the coastlines. This would later be corrupted into the nation's current name, Equilar.

When the nation split off into the southwestern English colonies, the eastern French colonies, and the majority-native northern area that both nations shared joint control of, three different ways of pronouncing the area's name emerged. In English, they retained the Spanish name of Equilar. In French, the name turned into Équilaire. In Equilo, the language of the native people of Equilar, which did not have a writing system until European colonialists implemented the Latin alphabet, the Spanish name was transcribed phonetically into the language, becoming Ekilar.

The standard way to refer to a citizen of Equilar is as an "Equilo."

Equilar has a unicameral legislature, known as the National Assembly. It is composed of fifty-six members: fourty-four elected representatives from various assembly ridings across the country, eleven senators who are elected on a provincial or territorial level, and one speaker of the legislature appointed by the assemblymen. Unlike in most other countries, senators do not constitute a separate Senate or upper house of parliament, but sit in the National Assembly alongside representatives. All representatives serve two-year terms, and senators serve four-year terms. The Prime Minister and the Cabinet are responsible to the National Assembly. All provinces and territories also maintain their own semi-autonomous legislatures.

The current prime minister of Equilar is Labourite Amanda Nadeau of the Terre-des-plaines riding of Nouvelle-Toulouse-Centre.
