Rebellion! In the midst of the political instability in Keyraht, a band of republicans, former peasants, and disgruntled soldiers organized in the small town of Ronpet. The town is home to a small arsenal and garrison built in the event of an invasion on the northern coast. The enemy, however, came from within as the rebels seized the armory and slaughtered anybody who refused to join their cause. The rebels, who call themselves the Noumana Army, soon spread across the northern coast of Keyraht. Thousands of Keyrahtis have joined them. Their recruits are mostly comprised of former peasants who have fallen into further squalor as a result of the government's mishandling of the abolition of feudalism. Many, however, are mutineers from the Keyrahti army, and their expertise in warfare means that they comprise the elite soldiers of the rebellion. The exact aims of the Noumana Army are unclear. Reports of their rhetoric ranges from the establishment of a Keyrahti republic to a simple overthrow of King Wasowak. News of the revolt almost immediately reaches the Royal Palace. Regent Te Moruon, without consulting the king, dispatches General Ron Akhaj and his army to deal with putting down the rebellion. Ron Akhaj and his army hastily march north and a state of emergency is declared on the northern half of Wo'aru. The Keyrahti Army passes through the central valley of the island and towards the town of Ronpet. Having been marching with little break for days, the army is winded and weary of the oncoming battle. In contrast, the zealous Noumana Army anticipated a brutal retaliation from the royal government and their soldiers, many of whom believe themselves to be impervious to bullets due to tribal superstitions, stand confident. As the Keyrahti Army gets in range, they quickly find themselves getting bombarded by the rebels' captured artillery and relentlessly picked off by riflemen mutineers. Ron Akhaj orders his men to stand further apart. As the army is finished spreading, elite rebel cavalry charge them and rapidly cut down the Royal Army. As the Royal Army gets closer to Ronpet Arsenal and the soldiers form tighter lines, however, the cavalry quickly move away, equip their firearms, and take potshots at the enemy. Believing his numbers superior, Ron Akhaj orders his men to charge the arsenal and storm in. In response, zealous peasants descend upon the winded and battered army and quickly overcome them. A slaughter begins as the rebels ruthlessly cut down the Keyrahti Army. Many royal soldiers make an attempt to desert. Some escape with their lives, but most are killed in the bloodbath. Many attempt to surrender and are taken prisoner. General Ron Akhaj is captured, decapitated, and his head paraded around Ronpet. The remnants of the defeated army flee southward through the valley. They survive on pillaging small farms. The remnants often find themselves under attack by the locals, who have grown hostile to the Royal Army. News of the disaster reaches the capital. Furious at this, King Wasowak I blames this on Ron Akhaj being a member of the Harapuri people and summons the Harapuri princes to the Royal Palace. Te Moruon, not wishing to invoke the wrath of the young king, watches in horror as half of the princes are executed as a sacrifice to Kane, and the rest are ordered to be castrated. The King orders total war against the rebels. |
The Federation of Pays dEspoir A Personal Triumph |
The Ville D'Argent Incident "In the past, the Kingdom of Keyraht has treated all barbarians with the mercy and kindness that their simple minds do deserve. In the past, foreigners, barring the hostile Wezinese, have respected the sacredness of the Land of Enlightenment. They have sought refuge in its traditions and riches, and have recognized the supremacy of the King of Keyraht, the Light of the Keyrahtis and sovereign of the four corners of the world. Never did we offend the foreigners. Indeed, the Kingdom of Keyraht was the first of all the nations of this world to recognize the government of the land of Pays dEspoir. King Kanewarman VII, who now reigns in the Pure Land, kindly received Payesian delegations. Unfortunately, those barbarians took advantage of the compassion of our former king and sought to spread seditious ideas of pure treason against the Throne. Now, I see the Payesians for what they are. They are a scourge upon this world who only seek to upset the ancient traditions of Keyraht. They seek to compel ordinary Keyrahtis to take arms and remove my crown from my holy head. These barbarians have cunning and deceptive plans, but they shall tremble before the might of the Keyrahti military. The Payesian barbarians rely on brute force and underhanded espionage to win, whereas the enlightened Kingdom of Keyraht has on our side the hearts and minds of the entirety of the civilized world. As of this decree, a state of war exists between the Kingdom of Keyraht and the barbarians of Pays dEspoir." Immediately, the Keyrahti fleet stationed in the port of Pahoang was mobilized and sent southward to attack and conduct an invasion of Pays dEspoir at their port of Ville D'Argent. The Keyrahti ships sport large sails, arrays of bronze cannons, however it lacks any steam engines and the hulls are made of wood. Nevertheless, Admiral Ta'ure and his men are enthusiastic on the journey to Ville D'Argent. They wholeheartedly believe that the Payesian garrison will be caught by surprise and swiftly annihilated, making way for Keyrahti infantry to flood the port. The Battle of Ville D'Argent Some ships soon begin to sink after enduring heavy bombardment from the industrial naval machines. The first to fall is the Raia, which plunges into the bay as it attempts to ram into a Payesian vessel. Some of the ships begin to attempt to retreat. Few escape, and most of the Keyrahti fleet is either sunk or captured. Admiral Ta'ure, whose ship surrendered to the Payesians, is captured. Two ships ultimately return to Pahoang, and the Keyrahti government learns of the disaster at Ville D'Argent. Once again, just like at the Battle of Ronpet, the monarchy is embarrassed. Confidence in its military is shattered and the once-widespread belief of Keyrahti superiority is essentially dissolved overnight. |
The Federation of Pays dEspoir Some voices of reason within Payesian society argue this directly proves the point of the PPP, that interventionism will only lead to the misery of the young republic and get her involved in numerous wars. However, those voices fall upon deafs ears for now. Payesians want nothing but blood for now, the day is celebrated as a holiday with the fire of the gun bringing hope for republicans globally against the cabals of an archaic monarchy on it's deathbed. The Keyrahti monarchists are derided in the news as nothing more than barbaric arrogant bloodthirsty monsters needing the enlightenment of the fire and republicanism by any means necessary, however such "xenophobia" is not spread to the general popolous of Keyraht. Liam D'Erable speaks of the goodness of the regular Keyrahti man and woman alike, how they welcomed him and made him feel at home even abroad. Common slogans speak of the "13 kind men" who, risking their own lives, stood up against tyranny in order to defend the Payesian people. There is even so far as a petition to grant them honourary Payesian citizenship. Thus, as a natural continuation of this train of thought, Liam D'Erable argues it is the Payesian responsibility to defend the Keyrahti people against the common oppressor, the Keyrahti monarchy. Though the triumvirate lacks the power to declare war, it is able to intepret the conditions of it. The triumvirate has stated that "no state of war exists between Keyraht and Pays D'Espoir, for the people of Keyraht and Pays D'Espoir maintain a brotherly disposition necessary of all lovers of liberty, a state of war exists solely between Pays D'Espoir and the person of the king a state of war inwhich the nation of Keyraht is a natural ally. It seems like all the goals of the UPS are coming together, Liam D'Erable will get the military build up he deemed as necessary to grow the Payesian economy. With the first national assembly only days away, it seems as though the results are a foregone conclusion. At this point even Juliette and the PPP seek to continue the war, anything but would be political suicide. Pays D'Espoir will, through the use of fire be it from a gun or the fires of revolution, bring hope. |
A Rival Government Receiving news of the Payesian declaration of war against King Wasowak I, the officers of the Noumana Army met in the de-facto rebel headquarters of Ronpet to organize a rival government. The rebel council discusses for hours regarding what courses of action are to be taken. Ultimately, the council decides to clarify and widen the goals of their rebellion. Keyrahti will be a republic and, until Mo'ikor is captured, they will serve as the provisional government. The council elects General Kana as the Provisional President. Next afternoon, Provisional President Kana delivers an address before a detachment of the Noumana Army, now the Army of the Keyrahti Republic. "The ordinary people of Keyraht have been plunged into a state of suffering and despair following the ascension of the tyrannical King Wasowak Marubua. The King and his court have upset the ways of the people of Keyraht and stripped us of the liberties we enjoyed under the benevolent rule of King Kanewarman VII. With his passing, so too perished a benevolent monarchy in Keyraht. It became necessary for the citizens of this land to organize for themselves a new government founded on the propositions of our ancient traditions, democracy, and the welfare of the people. The Noumana Army sought out to accomplish this herculean task and usher in a new era of Keyraht. Now, the government of the royal court is collapsing. In addition to our brave patriotic war, the royal court has started an irresponsible war against the land of Pays dEspoir. Yesterday, the council of the Noumana Army convened and formed a provisional government which appointed myself as its Provisional President. Recognizing the will of the entire Keyrahti people, the Provisional Government has proclaimed the founding of the Keyrahti Republic, with its capital in Mo'ikor." The crowd erupts into thunderous applause and President Kana joins in on the clapping. A new flag is hoisted over Ronpet--stripes of gold, blue, black, and red, symbolizing the various peoples of Keyraht. For the first time, a brass band plays the anthem of the Keyrahti Republic. Copies of the proclamation are circulated across areas under control of the Provisional Government, and news of this occasion soon spreads beyond and throughout all of Keyraht and the outside world. The surviving Harapuri chiefs of the Harakur Protectorate, angered by their treatment under the new king, meet and agree to declare their allegiance to the newly-proclaimed republic while still retaining claims to their traditional principalities. The Royal Government soon declares a state of emergency across the entirety of the kingdom. A decree is issued mandating the conscription of all able-bodied Keyrahti men, aged 14 and above, to help combat the threat of the rival government and in anticipation of a possible Payesian invasion. |
The Federation of Pays dEspoir L'Epoque D'Erable Durable But alas the matters of governing must show their ugly head in such moments of republican simplicity, slowly the debates grow more and more serious, slowly votes being to be held, legislation discussed elections held all the matters of governance the simple citizens were hoping to forget about. The tensions grew, infact a popular story comes from Ile D'Argent where a wife divorces her husband for supporting Liam D'Erable despite clear evidence he is a "Keyrahti double agent who planned an invasion against their beautiful island", still most remain civil. Still, things are shockingly civil. Local law enforcement were dispatched to the assemblies to stop any riots but not a single major case of their use is observed around the country, with most only going to far as to drunkenly ramble or yell. After all the votes are held, both the UPS and PPP in most districts host feats, together. Members of the UPS make fun of Liam and PPP make fun of Juliette, despite them being the leaders of their own factions. Some even joke about them being an old-married couple. Liam is called the "Keyrahti bootlegger who stole his fair share of wine and women while abroad" and Juliette is called his "wife who banned him from the house for smelling too much like alcohol" a rather ironic way to protray events that couldve very well led to Liam D'Erable's death and the death of atleast 20 citizens. Still, after the votes are announced something has become clear, the UPS have won in a landslide. 35 of the countries 40 districts have elected UPS district attendants, luckily for Juliette they will not be voting for a triumvir this election. All UPS legislation has passed, a bill of rights is proclaimed, military buildup accepted, foreigners granted a path to citizenship, a secular education system established, among numerous other pieces of legislation. The most interesting event is that both language bills passed, a majority of districts voted to educate solely in the new Payesian language and a majority agreed to keep it to local languages. Due to being purely separate bills from a legal perspective the government now has the impossible task of implementing two directly contradicting pieces of legislation, how this is to be resolved is yet to be seen. Still after the results are known more celebrations are held just to the very concept of liberty, in one of them a man mentions how this is the beginning of "L'Epoque D'Erable" a pun on how his name sounds like durable, and this is seemingly the beginning of an era of his dominance in the young republic. Still, his position is much more precarious than it may look, the language issue is still threatening the feable coalitions established by both the PPP and UPS, it is only a matter of time until one of them seeks to take a stance in order to gain some kind of political advantage. Furthermore there are many questioning, who exactly is Liam D'Erable? How did a relatively young man, who spent so many years abroad, get so fantastically rich and powerful? Why does such a man side consistently against the "elite" if he himself is a member of it? |
The Federation of Pays dEspoir The Payesian Triumvirate quickly recognizes the new government as the legitimate democratic government of Keyraht, this means foreign support will be entitled to be sent to Keyraht by Payesians including volunteering into their army. 2 thousand men volunteer go to serve abroad in Keyraht, along with General Montfort the most experienced Payesian general who led the revolution to it's glorious success, though not the official envoy of the Payesian republic he may as well serve as such in the mind and heart of the people. Subsidized weapons are also sold to any Keyrahti republican, which should hopefully boost the newfound Payesian arms industry. |
The Federation of Pays dEspoir A plan for a better tomorrow One of his first concerns is food supply, currently Pays D'Espoir is a relatively small country which has been continuously prone to deadly famines. This was due to the country's previous over reliance on the production of wine which has already been solved, but still, if the country is to industrialize it will need a significantly more stable supply of food. Therefor he researches feverishly for several supplies of fertilizer in order to increase the productivity of Payesian farms, through his research he meets a man by the name of Victor Pascal who is an organic chemist who has discovered that nitrogen rich fertilizers have a strong tendency to improve the productivity of crops and that the most producible of such a fertilizer are phosphate based. Liam D'Erable introduces a bill for the production of several Phosphate fertilizer factories which are to be invested 50% by the farmers cooperative and 50% from the central bank of Pays D'Espoir. Nonetheless, a not insignificant issue exists for the newly founded Payesian Agricultural Corporation, Pays D'Espoir has no natural source of phosphate an essential ingredient. Thus, Liam D'Erable introduces a bill in order to entitle the Payesian Agricultural Corporation to invest abroad, with the guarantee of the Payesian government of their assets abroad. The corporation is offering to build negotiate with other governments in order to build the necessary mines, it could be a good boost to the available jobs in a country especially given the company is more than willing to build railroads necessary to export this rock to Pays D'Espoir, but still the "guarantee" of Payesian investment may very well mean possible Payesian military involvement if said investments are at risk. To add to this, Payesians have been experimenting rather heavily with explosives in order to improve the productivity of mines, something which may put foreign workers at severe risk. However, Liam D'Erable is harshly a man to put all of his eggs in one basket, he has also convinced the Triumvirate to pass a new bill on Payesian foreign policy that garuntees Payesian protection and sovereignty of any island that is discovered to contain guano, an incredibly nitrogen rich substance. The island would be under the ownership of whoever discovers it, however they'd be required to sell the substance to the Payesian Agricultural Corporation, which should ensure an artificially low price due to the control of the farmers cooperative. Several such minor islands are already discovered. Luckily for Liam D'Erable his previous investments in railroad infrastructure are proving to be a tremendous success for this project, as the fertilizer is quickly sent to these new farms. However, questions remain on proper farming techniques, some farms are using techniques which are barely beyond medieval levels. As such, Liam D'Erable has ordered surveyors across the country in order to teach farmers of proper techniques for farming. These surveyors are educated at the university of Montfeu by Victor Pascal himself, and as such are sent to also explore the differences between Payesian soil and report back, so a plan can be made to maximize the efficiency of Payesian agriculture. He is able to broker deals between tool manufactures and the Payesian Farmers Cooperative in order to ensure effective tool use is used to maximize efficiency. He even orders the construction of new windmill and watermills more locally in order to ensure grain is converted to flour as efficiently as possible and that it is done by hand as rarely as possible in order to ensure farmers are able to dedicate themselves to more productive tasks. Where such mills are not possible the grain is to be shipped with the new rail network to one, which are all owned communally by the Payesian Farmers Cooperative. However despite this many farmers protest, first against the increase in control which they state reminds them of the "shackles of feudalism" and more practically about how such measures will lower the price of grain to such a degree farming will no longer be profitable. Once again Liam D'Erable has a solution, he is able to grant the Payesian Agricultural Corporation the monopoly over grain exportation and most importantly control (under government purview) of supply management abroad. As such, the soon to come abundance in supply in Pays D'Espoir should still lower the prices enough in order to ensure the population boom and industrialization Liam D'Erable is hoping for, well the farmers should be able to profit off of the food scarcity abroad. Some are questioning this policy, stating that Liam D'Erable is abandoning his internationalist roots, that he is effectively "starving" foreigners. A story is spread about how grain is quite literally burnt instead of given to a foreign orphanage in order to ensure prices remain steady. He offers the token promise that fellow revolutionary countries will be offered a significantly lower price, in order to ensure the people know the price of their reactionary governments. As much as all of these policies are promising a "better" tomorrow for Pays D'Espoir some are arguing it will come at a deep moral price, Pays D'Espoir is quite literally the country of hope for the world as a whole but with this she is losing her innocence as a nation becoming just like the imperialist countries of yore and that these foreign investments will only breed conflicts and an era of Payesian imperialism. Some look to these developments as a positive, ushering in a promised era of revolutionary peace where Payesian global hegemony is to come, but still others argue this is a minor development. Some more local concerns fear this is the beginning of Liam D'Erables descent into positivism away from his syndicalist routes due to his support of an international corporation and attempting to strong-arm in some manners the farmer's cooperative. Whatever may come at the very least Payesians should be able to stomach it, with their much better fed stomachs. |
Fly King Wasowak I, with his robes tied up to free his legs, grips the ball. He slowly, but deliberately, moves towards the alley before letting go of it. His three fingers slip out and the ball gracefully knocks down all the pins. In the midst of the civil war, the King has introduced a rather foreign way of leisure to the palace: an outdoor bowling alley. Queen Ruana watches her husband from a bench, bored out of her mind while a servant stands next her with a platter full of snacks. Another servant holds a parasol over the Queen. "Did you see that?" Wasowak asks her. "Very cool," she replies, "Now do that to the rebels." "As if you'd be a better ruler," Wasowak replies sternly, "You're the most powerful woman and all you do is sit around and waste state funds on your calligraphy." The Queen stands up and walks towards the King. "At least I know the republic won't cut off my head when they win-- after you surrender." She asks for her servant to give her an opium cigarette. Another servant lights it for her. "If I were you, I'd rather be just another court eunuch." "What do you think?" The King asks a concubine seated at another bench. She closes her copy of translated Frankian folk tales. "What?" "Whatever your name is--I think I'd rather have you as Queen," the King declares. "I bet you would! You spend more time with her than you do with me," the Queen barks back. "Look, I don't even have an opinion--" the concubine begins. "You can't change Queens, that's not allowed!" Right as the King raises his fist, their argument is interrupted when the Minister of Rites (Opu Karani if you aren't a real keyrahti lore theorist) enters the garden. He bows before King Wasowak and informs him that it is time for his tutoring session. Seeing the opportunity, Queen Ruana and the concubine dismiss themselves and swiftly walk someplace else. The servant holding the Queen's parasol can hardly keep up with her pace. "What is it?" The King asks, "Just give me the lesson quick, here and now." Minister Opu, disappointed, sighs and says, "King Kanewarman VII set a perfect example for you. He treated any enemies of his, which were few, with mercy and compassion. This included rebels. One time, he summoned a captured rebel leader to the Royal Palace and asked him why he took up arms against the throne. The rebel leader responded that local administrators had hoarded food supplies and refused to provide relief in a time of season harvests. In response, the Divine King made peace with the rebel leader, fired the local administrators, and distributed grain to those in need." "This session is over," the King states. Kana, The Will of Kane President Kana of the recently-declared Keyrahti Republic stands before a crowd in a sort of plaza at the center of a newly captured village. The village is small, though large enough to house a modest temple and accompanying monastery. The Provisional President is flanked by a score of republican soldiers. "This village has been liberated, freed from the oppressive shackles of the corrupt monarchy, yet I know there are some among you who worry for what is to come. I, your President, come here to put an end to any concerns you may have. We do not seek to disrupt or conscript you all to fight in our struggle. If you seek to volunteer, you may. The traditions of the people are respected by this republic. The temple rites may continue. Although, in due time, I am sure you all will see fit to remove your shrines to Marubua Wasowak. I ask that no shrines are erected in my honor, for I am but the instrument of the liberation of the Keyrahti people. I am no more than the will of Kane and Tau'am. Know that your so-called king has lost all legitimacy. Why else would all powers, both foreign and domestic, descend upon him? The aims of the Army of the Keyrahti Republic are as follows: The pacification of the Keyrahti isles which in the present time are in a great crisis and the rebirth of Keyraht into a republic founded on the principles of popular rule. As of today, this humble village is now part of that great experiment." Catland and Pays dEspoir |
