It's kinda' sad that I didn't know RBG even existed until earlier this year when I watched a Netflix documentary about her. Granted, I am in the UK so it's not as if we're taught about the US Supreme Court and who sits on it but still.

She's no Louise Arbour.

They are two very different women, my love. Louise is brilliant in her work in the international arena, while Ruth was a jurist of uncommon intellect and whose cases, I would argue, had more influential effects in her creation of a line of legal precedent for feminist goals in a nation almost rabid about insisting they’re already perfect and don’t need to change. Besides, how many Canadians are there? 17? It would be harder to get on a train car back home than get on the Canadian Supreme Court.

I should also note that Arbour is an expert in criminal law to Ginsburg’s civil experience, leading to an inherent difficulty in comparing them in any meaningful way.

I'm sure Arbour is good at what she does but international law is a bit of a meaningless concept when nations can defy it at will. Laws only matter when they can be enforced. What practical way can a nation be compelled to follow international law? Sanctions maybe? Even then, that wouldn't work as the country can still continue to break whatever international law is being broken.

RBG I would argue has had a more practical effect on people's lives. It's intensely saddening to realise that all of her life's work will probably come undone because Trump will appoint some right-wing mutant and ensure a conservative-majority SC for generations to come.

To be honest, I don't really care about what politics is what. I just want people to be able to live comfortably and be able to take care of themselves and their kids and stuff. And have a reasonable amount of free time. Obviously, working is an obligation, though. But I guess that no one should be paid so little that even with their hard work they can barely survive...

It's also a shame how people like Garbage men, Janitors, etc are looked down upon, they are a vital service to this nation.

Edit:
I also don't want companies exploiting third world countries for their resources.

This is the inherent contradiction within capitalism. People are told to "work harder" and "better themselves" by climbing a career ladder. Some people are unable to do this or simply don't want to. So people who perform menial jobs like the ones you listed are looked down upon as losers, as lazy, as failures. And people who become disgustingly rich through exploiting others are celebrated. It's a deeply sinister, twisted society we live in.

If everyone was entrepreneurial and became rich, who is left to take out the rubbish? Clean the toilets? Staff the businesses owned by all these fabulous entrepreneurs? Capitalism as a system needs an underclass to maintain itself. The rich and comfortable middle class simply use the myth of "working hard" to justify inequality, and to make themselves feel better for voting in such a way that harms the poor because, well, it's their fault they are poor isn't it?

Apologies for the rant.

There certainly is a problem with capitalism, as the only way for it to function is if someone is always on the bottom. Though we shouldn't ignore the problems with ideologies that are "better". No ideology is without its flaws.

I mean, for a long time I wanted to be a teacher. Because I guess I'm good at explaining things and also I wanted to help people actually enjoy learning. That's not a high paying job, but maybe it'll make me rich in other ways.
