The Feminist Empire of Three Galaxies The women of the Dune series have very powerful roles - from the concubine of a revolutionary, to the young rebel who overthrows the God Emperor, and finally the wise warrior who unites two bickering factions and basically becomes Queen of the Milky Way. That's a very feminist approach, and exceptionally progressive for books written between 1965 and 1985. However, if you happen to have many LGBT friends, I can understand why they don't like this stuff. There's obviously nothing wrong with the fact that Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, the big villain of the first book, is flamboyantly gay. Unfortunately, due to Frank Herbert's homophobia, the character is also a greedy, murderous, incestuous pedophile, and overall a fat bastard. Fortunately, Denis Villeneuve's new films only portray him as a bad person, not as a bad gay. |
