What is RolePlay?

RolePlay (RP) is essentially a grand story, which can be told from the eyes of a character, a state apparatus, or an omniscient narrator. This story is a cooperative effort that is created by contributions from all members of the RolePlay community. A lot of RolePlaying in the North Pacific focuses on diplomatic relations between other nations in the region and interactions between its governments. Many of these RolePlays center around a few specific people and their interactions.

Why should I join?

RolePlay extends beyond the issue answering and gameplay mechanics of NationStates. It takes place in it's own separate world and allows for more creative thinking and writing. It is through these complexities, that our nations truly come to life.

How do I get started?

There are two official RolePlay communities in The North Pacific: Forum-based Eras, and Regional Message Board-based Strangereal.

To join the Forum-based RolePlay community, you need to create a forum account Linkhere. You can then head on over to the LinkRolePlay forum to get started. You can start off by claiming a spot on the TNP map located Linkhere.

Here's my factbook - have a scroll.

Overview

In a galaxy quite close to home, in a planet that is home, about two hundred and twelve years ago a country was birthed in the Balkans. This nation would grow and flourish into a powerhouse that dominates no-one and is friends with most. A nation of utmost fun and dignity, here is the history of the Celestial Republican Democracial Nation of Fun Fun.

Founding

The nation was first the brainchild of Ludwig Van Beethovan - a man not be to be confused with his far more famous second cousin. This Ludwig dreamt of a nation called "Spaß-land" or 'Fun-land' where he could avoid military conscription, pay no taxes, and marry as many women as he wanted to. He created a manifesto and stuck it upon several quite rich people's doors, being blatantly ignored and thrown into jail.
However one such rich person, Alvin Stregheus liked this idea and had thrown Ludwig into jail to keep it for himself. Buying a parcel of land in Southern Romania he spent eight years convincing other people to move in with him, dying unsatisfied. Upon his death the nation floundered and almost collapsed before it was founded, however a saviour was to come.

Alvin II Stregheus was the youngest and least-prodigious son of Alvin Stregheus and preferred sitting at tables moving toy soldiers than doing any 'real work'. However when he decided to take the reigns of the colony he became proficient at politics.

His first move was to scrap the idea of the land being a place for 'dignified and civilised beings' and instead devoted it as a safe haven for those just wanting a more 'Spaß' life.
After acquiring both the signatures and funding of over one hundred thousand people, Alvin II travelled to the site and laid the first stone of what was to be the great city of Giden.

Rocky Start

Within a year over eighteen thousand had migrated to this new city and the already meagre services were being put to the test. Sanitation was disgusting and the Great Cholera Plague of 1808 killed over eight hundred before a new channel was built to divert sewage. Healthcare and Education were also lacking and the absence of any law and order allowed crime to flourish.

In a matter of a year Alvin II had gone from a budding and well-respected leader to a hated figure that would kill the citizens of Spaß-Land if he had a chance. He desperately tried to retain order and the implementation of several draconion laws (known in history as the "Fist Acts") would only deepen the populace's hatred for him.
Despite this he managed to maintain his position as absolute leader and foresaw the construction of the First Government Palace and the great Immigration Hall. Thousands of people were flooding into the city and the country was beginning to prosper.

By 1810 the country had developed a thriving agricultural and industrial base drawing the attention of nearby nations. During the midst of the Napoleonic Wars however no nation could spare men to invade Spaß-Land and it would be many more years before anyone even think about the nation again.
That was alright though as the nation was about to dissolve in on itself.

The First Revolution

In 1811 the First Revolution began, starting almost immediately after the publishing of Fist Act 4. It is estimated that over half of the populace rose up in this revolution and another ten thousand died. The nation was divided with the overwhelmingly loyalist towns and population centres having to fight against the overwhelmingly rural and angry peasants.
There's a reason this is called the First Revolution however and that would be due to the success of the attacks. In a matter of a year the rebels had taken all but Giden and were encircling that too, Alvin II attempted to treat with them but was brutally murdered and beheaded by them.
His head was stuck on a pike and paraded through the towns, much to the shock and horror of many of the towns locals.
What occurred next was mass rape, pillaging and murder; the so called "Sacking of Giden" in which over three thousand townsfolk would get relieved of their dignity or of their lives.
The rebels created a democratic legislature (in the wake of France's) and allied themselves with Napoleon.
They became the ruling party and issued an ultimate rule of terror - the "Schrecken".

The Schrecken

What characterised this eight year period (1812 - 1821) was an utmost iron fist upon the population of Spaß-Land. The adoption of many laws and rules from France led to a "the terror" like atmosphere with hundreds dying just from uttering a word against the new parliament.
Elections were supposedly held but any result was clearly in the rebels favour (or the National Peasants Party as they fashioned themselves - NPP).

This rule was even more terrifying than the one of Alvin II and many found themselves thinking (they couldn't say their thoughts otherwise they'd get killed) about the 'good old' times when Alvin was leader.
With this thought in mind an underground movement was created - imaginatively called "der Untergrund".
Thousands joined and by 1819 they had amassed enough confidence and power to attack the NPP.
Their first target was the New Giden Hall, which they set a fire on the 8th of August and blew up on the next day (this is said by some as the start of the Funian tradition of burning and blowing up enemies).

Then amidst burning Giden they leapt out of their hidey-holes and killed any rebels they could find. Over one thousand were captured and two hundred executed. Der Untergrund claimed the government and raised one of their own to take the new "Crown of Spaß-Land". This new king was Alvin III, the son of Alvin II.

Note: Some say that this Untergrunden uprising should be the Second Revolution, but many others say that this was just a continuation of the First and should only be counted as the 'opening of an old wound' as some would say.

Alvin III

As a young child Alvin III was told that he would be the son of the least son in a minor merchant family, however as he grew and matured he was told that he'd be king and then that he would have nothing. Now that he was king he was determined to ensure that his own children would never face that sort of mental crisis.
At the age of 20 he ascended the throne and he would live until the age of 56, during these years Spaß-Land saw a dramatic increase in population, economy, and living standards. Due to this many in The Land of Fun still call Alvin III the "Generous Old Man".

His first ruling was the re-establishment of the Parliament, which he renamed the Parlament, these elected representatives would give him both council and support him in his actions. They were his ambassadors to the people.
Through them he enacted the first of his "Grand Policies", one which reverted much of his predecessors actions and established the first Funian taxes - a small income tax. Before that the government had made money by owning a monopoly on liquor, but now Alvin III wanted to create a governmental system in the like of the Americas, or Western Europe.
It took him months to do so, many of which involved talking to other nations, who believed that if a constitutional monarchy was to pop up next to them then the people would get ideas, and to local regional figureheads who also didn't want their power compromised. Alvin III famously remarked that he wished that someone was would, "take this burden that has fallen into my hands, though I may wish not that pain to fall upon others..."
It was a daunting task but by the 11th of August, 1822 he had done it, the Parlament was fully elected and fully established. Immediately he granted them larger temporary powers, deciding to take a break in his seaside dwelling (which can be better described as a palace).

The Parlament had 150 elected members, one representing each 6500 members of the populace. These 150 members would delegate - much like any political system does - and decide upon rules. During this 'siesta' of the king they would establish much, including a national army (with mandatory conscription - as befit the Balkans), a national bank, currency (the Funian Dollar), and a national healthcare and education system. To allow such an increase in national spending however they had to quadruple taxes in the short five month period.
Obviously this cause much unrest among the almost million strong population and they rebelled in clear anger. It took eight thousand armed troops standing in front of the Parlament Building to stop the rebellion. The apparent leader of the rebellion - Robert Fogger - was taken in and tortured by the army.
His death due to injuries sustained during the torture only made him a martyr and the following day after his death was announced eleven thousand citizens demonstrated in front of the Parlament Building.

The king was recalled back and he lowered the taxes. This pleased the populace but left one unanswered question, the matter of the treasury. To answer this Alvin III nationalised both the steel and coal industries of Spaß-Land and created a tax upon imports and exports.

As the nation progressed they watched from the inside, waning in power as the Ottoman's waxed. This was Spaß-Land's time in the sun and the nation began a fast and speedy industrialisation, tripling in GDP and doubling the estimated manpower of their army within five years.
This speedy growth was similarly reflected in the growth of the royal family, Alvin III had two sons in this period and three daughters (having three wives - traditional). These five children became symbols of the nations bright path forward and as they grew the nation grew with them.

By 1830 the nation was unrecognisable from a decade prior, and it was hard to believe that the country was only founded twenty years ago, and had spent half that time in disrepair. Alvin III reflected upon that in his celebration as king for 10 years.

In the following twenty-six years of his leadership the country would expand to new heights, building embassies, expanding militaristically and economically, developing a rich common identity, and not succumbing under any peasant revolts.
However as Alvin III succumbed to heart failure on the 11th of August, 1856 - the 34th anniversary of the opening of Parlament a scuffle emerged between the king's beloved children. It was time for a civil war, one that would affect the nation for decades to come afterwards.

The Civil War of Succession

Alvin IV was the eldest and most respected of Alvin III's children and he held sway in both the army and most populated areas of the country, however the rest of the children (led by Juliana) disliked the power he had and they wanted to take the nation for themselves.
Similarly to the First Revolution, the rebels held the lesser populated more rural districts, while the loyalists held the major population centres.

Alvin IV believed he could avert such a crisis similar to that of the First Revolution and sent his twenty thousand strong army throughout the countryside, burning anything they could find and killing anyone they could find. But that was predicted by the rebels (or Juliana's Men, as they became known) and they struck back in guerrilla tactics, stopping supply trains and picking off smaller battalions of troops.

Within three months Alvin IV had been deprived of an army and Juliana's Men had found themselves with modern weaponry and the hearts of the common folk. Alvin IV famously launched his famed "Die Erkenntnis" propaganda campaign, labelling his half-sister as a "demon straight from hell" or as a "devilish she-witch".
The populous liked this even less and on the 20th of December a major rebellion began in Willham, switching the city from Alvin's to Juliana's.

Now possessing new confidence Juliana's Men seized all great population centres excluding Giden, leaving Alvin to rule a small city-state without any outer support. Juliana decided to repackage the country entirely, changing it to the English name that it is today "TheLandOfFunFunFun". She also moved the capital to the city that she had spent most of her childhood - Beteus Port. Here she governed a full 98.7% percent of the nation, with Alvin being the only opposition to her power.

By 1857 Giden was starving and the only eight thousand individuals in the town hated Alvin IV for inflicting this harm upon him, they protested en masse and stuck his head on a pike. The town gates were opened and the Gidens stormed out, hoping that there was food in the surrounding countryside. Over sixteen thousand had died of food depravation, and reports of cannibalism were widespread.
Juliana now had full control of the country and so she crowned herself 'Queen of the Land of Fun Fun Fun', her nation had just over 1.5 million citizens, and had just gone through a brutal civil war.

However Juliana's success would come short as an assassin finished her off within weeks of her ascension to the throne. The nation was plunged back into the civil war, with consequences being even more devastating.

Note: It is unknown which nation sent the assassin, though the most likely culprits are the Ottomans or the Romanians, who both detested the idea of a woman commanding such a force near their own nation

This second struggle for power involved three main players, Ludwig of Willham (the second son of Alvin III), Augustina of Seren (the daughter of Alvin III), and Anna of Peskiv Lake (the second daughter of Alvin III). The primary battleground of the war was Central Funia and all people of The Land Of Fun Fun Fun would be affected.

The first attack was when Ludwig launched a full assault upon Augustina, sending his eighteen thousand conscripts forth. Augustina only had one response which was to burn the land around her town and seal the gates, she was going into siege.

Note: It's impossible to tell why Ludwig decided to attack Augustina when Anna was in fact weaker. Certain historians, such as the ones sponsored by the National University say that Ludwig just didn't like Augustina as much and remembered the times he was bullied by her. Of course this sounds like an absurd reason to send an army over to attack a town so there lies another far less touched upon solution.
Before beginning to fight Ludwig had married a young woman called Petra Of Blackstone, certain legends say that she hated Augustina herself and told Ludwig to attack her instead of the weaker Anna. There is no explanation for why Petra dislike Augustina.

Anna was surprised at this sudden move by Ludwig and mobilised her forces to take Giden, marching well over twenty thousand to do so. The mayor of Giden was shocked at this force outside his ten thousand men town and surrendered immediately. Giden - as the cultural original centre-point of the country - held the Royal Crown, and on the 1st of January, 1858 she would crown herself Queen of Fun Fun Fun. Only two hundred attended her coronation and so Augustina and Ludwig denounced her claims.

Engaged in a siege, Augustina still found time to insult her younger brother, calling him "a whiney little lad that split his milk" or a "little half-bastard that just wants his mom". We cannot record what Ludwig retorted back.

Seeing the undefended lands worth grabbing the Romanians attempted an invasion around this time, the only recorded result is that Romania found itself addicted upon green tasting cookies.
As Ludwig and Augustina called upon their levies, Anna was busy sneaking up behind to snatch their lands. One by one towns fell under her rule and within eight months of her coronation she was in sights of Willham.
Shocked Ludwig ordered his men back, they mutinied and joined Augustina who had emerged from the siege victorious.
In Funian way Ludwig was beheaded and his head stuck upon a spike.

Now it was just Augustina and Anna, and together they called upon all their allies could muster. Over eighty thousand troops - thirty thousand which were women - marched towards the Beteus Delta. If you could take the capital then you would have won the country.
In the following battle, known today as the "Dominance of Women", the two parties clashed in the town, their armies fighting on the streets and in the buildings.

Over fifty thousand soldiers would be killed, and an additional two thousand civilians. However by the end of the week it was clear that Anna had won the battle and therefore the nation. Augustina realised this and surrendered to Anna on the battlefield, throwing her plate-armour in modesty.
Anna raised up Augustina - and according to legend kissed her on both cheeks proclaiming, "you're still my sister, and together we will rule!" - what is known is that Anna granted Augustina the duchy of Seren as her fiefdom.

The Years of Peace

The most characteristic event of the Years of Peace was the peace that the Land of Fun Fun Fun experienced. Anna I ruled with an even enough hand and managed to persuade the populace that a woman leader would not cause the end of them. With her skills in diplomacy she persuaded both the Ottomans and the Bulgarians that her existence as leader would be in their best interests.

Within a decade of her rule, the Parlament was restored as the General Assembly (GA) and the introduction of numerous laws - including ones advocating for women's equality - were established. Within this decade major traces of the war disappeared and the nation swelled in it's power, unfortunately leading to an end in that peace.

However before we talk about this end of peace the development of the nation must be shown. In the 1810's the nation barely existed - let alone develop any meaningful numbers - we can only begin to compare when shown with Alvin III's efforts. So with that we will compare the difference between The Land Of Fun Fun Fun in 1825 to the one in 1869.

Population: 1825 - 1 million | 1869 - 2 million
GDP (Funian Dollars): 1825 - 800 million | 1869 - 3.6 billion
Soldiers: 1825 - 12,500 | 1869 - 54,800
Government Budget (Funian Dollars): 1825 - 96 million | 1869 - 730 million

The Years of Much Turmoil

As the nation grew it devoured the land it was granted originally, by 1870 the country had far outgrown it's land and was hungry for more, with nearby Bulgaria and Romania looking like easy targets.
Unfortunately for Romania, Bulgaria had Russian support, and so the Land of Fun decided to target struggling for independence, weak economy, terrible infrastructure Romania.
It's army of well over fifty thousand was divided into several key factions, with the two main attacking deep into Romanian heartland, intent upon seizing Bucharest.
The plans were so that within a year the red borders would be the new reaches of the Land Of Fun, in hindsight this seems like a stupid decision made by Anna, and it was perhaps her only great mistake.

Within days the army was already having to retreat, and the men lost in the advance had been sorely needed if a defence was to be mounted. The remaining thirty-five thousand fled back to Funian bases and set to prepare for the greatest fight of their lifetimes.

The Romanians struck back hard, sending a full ten thousand men into Northern Funia, almost taking Willham and killing thousands of defenders.
Down south an alliance with Bulgaria allowed the Funians to hold off the fifteen thousand strong attack, managing to lead another counterattack and pushing past Calarasi.
Within a month the death-toll had skyrocketed to well over seventy thousand and both sides had had enough.
A Bucharest Accord was reached and on the 1st of November, 1870 the war ended. The lands near Calarasi were granted to The Land of Fun, while the Land of Fun had to pay Romania in war reparations.

Anna had managed to hold to her country and had safely manoeuvred what could have been disaster. The populace loved her even more now and when her Silver Jubilee rolled around (25 years on the throne - 1874) the nation rejoiced. The largest celebrations ever held in Funian history lasted for two months, with millions of litres of alcohol drunk.
According to experts over twenty thousand children were conceived during these two months and another thirty thousand were born, timed by parents to celebrate such occasion; a record eight thousand children were named Anna, five of which were clearly male.

However Anna was secretly under the influence of cholera and she died two days after her celebrations ended. She had no clear heir, her only relative being the 26 year old Elena Stregheus - the daughter of Ludwig of Willham and Petra of Blackstone. Considering how she was the daughter of two 'rebels' her claim was discarded and others were considered.

As garnered it seems that most vicious periods during Funian history (other than the world war's) were caused by succession crises, and this one was no different. As the representatives debated the nation erupted into turmoil - as the name suggests.
In Peskiv Lake a man by the name of the Red Serpent struck arms and declared the "Republic of Peskiv", this was put down to much violence and resulted in the deaths of hundreds.
In the Giden Forests, an organisation called the National Farmer's Union (NFU) began taking advantage of this lax regulation and starting burning forest to create farmland. This was against the direct orders of the government but they could almost do nothing to stop it - not until they could decide upon an heir.

As thousands died in conflicts, and lawlessness cut through the nation, again Romania began to look at them. They had only fought six years prior and this conflict had not been forgotten. Despite Bulgaria's and Russia's clear intent of keeping the Land of Fun independent they had other items to focus on.
A force of well over sixteen thousand marched into Funian territory, pillaging the towns of Dtrim and Carthin, hundreds died and a fierce resistance was created by the militia-men of the west.

Finally, after thousands of deaths and much destruction the government came upon a decision. Elena Stregheus was coronated as queen and her mother, Petra of Blackstone, was legitimised as a loyalist - thanks to her now royal daughter.

Despite this new leader to rally around, the Funian's had to create a counterattack, sending thirty thousand soldiers to put down this attack upon their lands. A fierce fight developed in the Westerlands and to this day signs of this conflict remain.
Many more perished during this so called "War For Elena's Claim" and thousands of widows would be created in the next few months.
However, finally by April 1876, the fighting was over, a peace deal was established and thousands had died. The true death toll will never be done but estimates place it around twenty thousand - a clear toll for the Funian population, though peace would finally reign supreme yet again.
