HEY, anybody interested in thinking about something interesting (the future), go ahead and check out my new Factbook. I’m a 21st-century, tech-savvy Zoomer who just had a major imaginative moment and decided to share it with you guys. Thanks! [So, I just went and saw the trailer for Grand Theft Auto V on the PlayStation 5. I’m hoping it’s not too hard to understand all the video game jargon in the beginning, but basically, for you non-teenagers (i.e. non-gamers lol) this is one of the most popular pieces of modern entertainment in the current century, and I (along with the majority of other viewers, who disliked the video) was affected by issues surrounding how the transition between consoles (PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 5) would work—things about compatibility, how much money is needed for the spending necessary to make the transition as a player, the difficulties of doing so, et cetera. But all of this got me (and my overactive teenage brain cells) thinking on a bigger and bigger scale until...well, until I began contemplating the intricacies of life as an adult. What can I expect life to be like in 30 years? You adults reading this, what predictions did you make when you were younger and which aspects of life surprised you? Which things did you end up being right about? How could you have prepared better? Et cetera (not in terms of being successful, getting a job and whatnot—although that’s perfectly welcomed as a talking point—but more so in terms of what you thought life in the future would be like. I’m sure everybody seriously thinks about it at some point. I hope so! Anyway, here was my long string of thoughts at the time:] >> I’ll tell you something, I’ve spent long enough getting 100% completion in GTA V. I’m not going to spend one thousand dollars to get a “next-gen” console, controller, a huge amount of other necessary equipment for some mundane “exclusive content”. I don’t care how popular the game is. I bet the honest truth is that Rockstar is too scared to make GTA VI because it won’t “live up to the standards.” They don’t know how to make the perfect game, so they’ll take the closest thing they have and milk it dry. GTA Online is bad enough for me, I spent and wasted two hundred dollars on it (and when I did, my friends said “only two hundred?” Get a f[NO-NO WORD REDACTED POSTHUMOUSLY TO PRESERVE SUBSTANCE]ing life people!) and I’m done playing it, especially if there’s gonna be even-more-souped-up hotshots playing on their PS5s. And what can I do when I have a PS4 and a PS5 in the same room?? I won’t know which to play on. I probably can’t use the discs for the games I already have, so any game I’ve played on the PS4 that I want to play on the PS5, I’ll have to somehow get a new disc compatible with the console, and even then, all of my progress is gone. Maybe eventually games will stop being released for PS4 and I’ll be forced to get a PS5. So the games I have now I’d play on my PS4 as much as I can and any new ones I want I’d play on PS5. So now I either have to trophy hunt all my PS4 games until my console inevitably stops working and I can’t play them anymore, or hope that new PS4s that I can buy continue being made. Because once I don’t have a PS4, that’s it. All my games now are useless...UNLESS PS4 discs work on PS5s!! But still, there go all of my hopes of being able to play all the best PS3 games on console...Unless I spend a bunch of money converting to PC, I can’t play Grand Theft Auto IV or any other un-remastered games...Ugh. (Note added in later: I also thought about how by the time all this sort of thing gets set up, I’ll be finishing high school. So, I’ll have missed out on all the best PS3 games because I was too young, and if I want to be responsible, I’ll have to steer myself away from anything that comes out of the PS5, unfortunately...Even during the summer, based on my better judgement, I’ll have to spend time developing skills or knowledge or “bettering myself” the “old-fashioned” way rather than embracing the oncoming era of unproductive electronic entertainment, which everybody would love to do at some point, I’m sure. But now it sounds like I’m complaining about becoming an adult, which I’m not trying to do at all. It’s just nice to have more free time, plain and simple. I think most would agree it would be nice if life was mostly just do-whatever-you-want free time with a couple hours of laid-back work mixed in each day or two. ANYWAY...) (...) >> Why can’t console producers just continue updating the things that already exist? Then nobody needs to bother with continuity issues or whatever. Or just make the current strategy work properly, no data loss between console generations. I mean, I just got an iPhone 8 Plus because my iPhone 6 was broken, and I didn’t have to restart progress for ANY game I had. >> Maybe the best thing to do is to just download games form the PS Store, that way PSN should prevent any data loss as long as PS Store games can be seamlessly played on both generations (which, if they can’t, is total garbage). I think the same thing that happened to movies will happen to video games, but for different reasons. Eventually, to avoid difficulty, people will stop buying physical copies of consoles games (i.e. discs) and just download them directly into their machine. So stores like GameStop and maybe even Best Buy will just completely fade away, just like Blockbuster did. All their hardware will be replaced by online, downloadable software just like Blockbuster was replaced by Netflix. So, we go from cartridges to discs to something totally invisible...Da[ng]. This just got really interesting to think about! Because look, first their were “regular” telephones. Now, the phone is just one app on our device—which we still call a ‘phone’ even though it’s actually much more! And I bet at some point all the features of the MODERN cell phone will end up being a small part of future tech, et cetera, et cetera! Nothing will be handheld anymore. All these things we have now will just merge together. >> I bet eventually there will just be one device that’s a stove, TV, vacuum cleaner, computer, fridge, phone, everything all in one. It can cook your food, play music, control your lights, even transport you...WOW. The future... >> I wonder what it would look like. A big rectangular prism? The bottom has wheels and cleaning devices, the top has a big heating surface for food but you can also use it as a bed, one side is a big screen that’s also a door you can open to reveal a temperature-controlled storage area, and... >> Wait a minute. Oh my god!!! It’s like a house. Imagine everything in your house. Your house is really just a shape with everything stuck to the inside edges. So, everything really will get smaller. Everything will just shrink, squeeze, downsize. The house will be a fifteen-foot prism with all these things built in the inside. And don’t forget, it’ll be a car, too. So like, almost like a mobile home but with every appliance part of it! A...mobile biome!! Maybe it could have some sort of helicopter propellers or jet engines on the top, too, so it could fly and give you thousand-mile travel to wherever you need... >> My word...Lol I should probably begin trying to milk money out of all this before someone steals this idea x1000...Wow. Am I a Leo Da Vinci now? Should I draw blueprints of this? It’ll become harder and harder to predict the future because everything will just get more and more complex. It seems impossible that the iPhone will be considered as simple by the time I die *reach old age* as a lightbulb is now. But we still use lightbulbs after two hundred years, and when you think about it...Part of our phones are tons of tiny lightbulbs...So yeah, I guess future devices will be almost like thousands of phones “simply” put together just to make one feature of the product. >> Crazy. All these branches of tech will just keep coming together more and more...And nobody can even be sure if we’ll ever hit a limit to how many things one product can do, how complex something manmade can be. And I can’t tell if making more advanced products will continue getting faster and faster or if it will get so complex it’ll take longer and longer to make them. If we begin running out of things to incorporate, then it’ll take longer, but again, we can’t know if that’ll happen... >> Actually, almost saddening that we’ll continue making things simpler and simpler for ourselves, but harder and harder for our inventions. These creations? Machines? Devices? will just do more and more for us, until the only productive thing we spend time doing is *making those products.* But then, it’s all exponential, because we’ll just invent machines to make those products, and so on and so forth, until we create something that can make more of itself. Haha, mechanical reproduction...Woooow. >> Funny, because none of these “ideas” are human modifications. Giving birth is still done the same way as it was a hundred thousand years ago, just with a tiny bit of help. We still move around and communicate (walk and talk) the same way, although we now have alternate, artificial means of doing so faster, but...it’s not that kind of difference yet. Nothing much has changed physically. Our select few of athletes are maybe a bit stronger or fitter than before; it really depends how far back you go. But anyway, yeah...I think my brain’s running out of juice. Too overwhelmed by the possibilities! I began thinking about...If we’ll begin modifying ourselves in a way that speeds up evolution (which could solve that problem of machines doing everything for us, in a way, but it raises many other moral questions) and then I just thought about where will we go? Which skills will become more important? Like, will the most important thing really just become having knowledge of tech, tech, tech? Will news and politics and war begin dying out as we move on to different things? Will conversations mostly be centered around moral, tech-related dilemmas? What about love, and entertainment...? Like, what will life become? And I haven’t even mentioned education, that will probably change completely. Hopefully everybody will have more motivation to learn and being smart in some sense will be more important...And how will jobs work? Will life skills and hobbies like cooking, playing musical instruments, et cetera still matter if robotic automation can do it all? And that relates to other things I’ve thought about. Yeah, what will social structure be like, and economics? Finance? Will money and classes become obsolete? Will nobody be poor and homeless anymore or will it not even matter because they don’t suffer due to how much easier things are? Anyway, back to one specific thought: to be fair to our predecessors, sports will need regulation. Like, in the Olympics, for instance. For track and field, what pair of shoes will be considered “too good”? Like, you couldn’t have springs on the bottoms, or cleats that flex and retract based on where the ground is in relation to your foot, or shoes that, like, *connect* with your skin, if you know what I’m trying to say, or built-in “intelligence” that modified the way you run in real time, right? Maybe the only way to make it fair is to just remove all variables—no more shoes, or heck, you have to compete nude, that way it really is all based on human ability and nothing else—then there really will be more accuracy with record-breaking and whatnot, to see if people really improve on their own, without development of track material and equipment helping them. Or just try to keep all the shoes and everything the exact same (which would be pleasing in terms of upholding tradition and nostalgia and everything). Or keep advancing in sports technology but try to give everyone the exact same equipment—but then there’s still the problem of people having different shoe sizes, et cetera, and then there’s no variety as well, especially when you think about how the only solution would be excluding, or maybe diving into categories? different shoe sizes, and most of all, breaking records would begin meaning less and less. Also, let’s say in tennis (because that’s the sport that comes to mind for me), there will have to be a limit to what your racquet can do. Again, it can’t have intelligence to “warp” the strings or racquet head or adjust your swing to “help” you hit the best shot every time, right? Because then it’s not people playing anymore, and difference in skill won’t mean much at all...Yeah, I dunno, it’s all so very interesting. >>What do you guys think? [Hope somebody can have an interesting conversation with me about this sometime. Sorry if it just sounds like some kid rambling about “FUUUTUUURE” (Squidward, anybody?) but, I’ll be real, that’s exactly what it is XD] (Thank you!) In short, I went from lightly ranting about the video game industry to deeply thinking about what technology will be like in a few decades. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
