HELLO | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The lines of the Imperium’s legions held steady. Advanced Lunghan marines fell back from occupied villages and town in the coastal lowlands to rejoin imperial forces. The sudden Aylwater assault reinforced from troops leaving the sarko union front caused disorder as they were outflanked from the east. Following the formation of a bulge in front, Lunghan airpower began to hammer enemy positions demolishing the villages once occupied by forward marine units. Anti- aircraft and missile defense vehicles were heavily focused along the trenches. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||

The Supreme Ultimate Country of Kyoki Chudoku This post was a collaborative effort between Sunaiya and Kyoki Chudoku. Aozora hadn’t shaken off her paranoia fully, but having discussed the issues of Sunaiya’s resurrection, she made the choice to examine the world with her own eyes. Of course, for the moment, the only method of doing so was looking out of the window. They have such little technology...magic can replace some of it, but even so...things must be very different here. Even something as basic as farming machines would be different, let alone more complicated devices. What is medicine like in this country, now? Can they heal most wounds and cure most afflictions with the arcane? Do they even have proper medical equipment now? What about...well, anything? She didn’t want to focus too much on the terrain outside. It was too...lush. It reminded her of how her own country had been, before the Nightmare, and the desolation which had followed. This isn’t the time for that. I’d...better just ask about these things before I get too distracted... “This world is...remarkable. But I’m curious. Without advanced technology...things must be a lot different. Even accounting for magic...living standards must be different.” Sumāto nodded back. “You are absolutely correct on that. Magic is a resource we use to overcome some challenges, and make convenience out of other menial tasks. But it can’t replace technology as you know it. Things like the internet and computers, for example, do not exist here. Others things, like wireless communication and airborne travel, do exist however, but things like that remain a rare luxury that few outside of the government possess. And many people out here in the wide open country, away from the cities, live... quite simply; without cars or even electricity. They do everything by hand, whether aided by the arcane or not, and deliver their trade by horse or just on foot. They use wood stoves for heating and cooking, and grow herbs for traditional medicines. If you ever held a book about Sunaiya in the early 20th century, that is what we are living today, Lady Aozora. We live estranged from the rest of the world because of what we do without.” Aozora nodded. She’d never held a history book on Sunaiya- history wasn’t her area of expertise, and had been busy enough without trying to pick up historical literature. Even so...there was a passing familiarity here. Not to Kyoki Chudoku, for the Supreme Ultimate Country had always embraced scientific advancement under her rule and had been modern for her time within it, but...It was a long time ago. It was a...different world. A world I barely understand even now. There’s no point comparing this to then. This is different, anyway. There is technology here, almost modern technology, and magic to empower it to an extent. Making use of a different form of comparison, however, was Tokiko, who spoke up for the first time on the car trip. “Closest thing we’ve ever lived to that was the Nightmare. Plenty of city, of course, but for those left isolated, everything was improvised. Had soldiers trying to cook rats with flamethrowers or with tank engines. Knew one girl, tenshi, she had control over fire. Made the scraps we got a lot more tolerable- still nauseating, but well, do what you can. I know it’s a lot different, but even if I’m used to the battlefield, I still wouldn’t want to live without things like electricity or land vehicles. Reckon anyone out there’s gonna try take advantage of your lack of tech, try sell you some? Or the other, less friendly outcome of what they might perceive as weakness?” Sumāto shook her head. “To use foreign-made machines and devices would be an affront to our gods and our culture. The reason we are the way we are was made clear to us when we were in heaven, as I told you earlier.” The last part was spoken with a little irritation. But then Sumāto took a pause and took on Tokiko’s other scenario. “As for what you believe to be a lack of military might, we still pack a large punch. All of our bullets are made with Shinzui laced gunpowder, allowing our rifles and cannons to fire with accuracy that keeps pace with even the most advanced targeting systems our potential enemies can come up with, and with a velocity that outright surpasses them! I very much doubt there’s an armored vehicle in this world that can withstand a Sunaiyan anti-tank cannon. Our weapons, paired with the skill of our soldiers and the aid of our gods, can beat even ‘advanced’ enemies with good strategy and spirit. So just because we look outdated, doesn’t mean we have to act like it when we fight to protect what we hold dear. Please remember this if you call us to aid your people in the future, Miss Tokiko.” The way she phrased this latter statement seemed to be made with the same spirited patriotism Aozora and Tokiko saw from her when they first met. Tokiko shrugged. “Magical weapons can be nasty. Pain projectors, those rift weapons...if all your weapons are enhanced with magic, I can imagine it might level the field out. I’m not a military strategist, just an ex-soldier. Not sure how you’d handle, say, a missile strike, but then a society without magic hasn’t got much against arcane pain manipulation, so there’s a balance to it.” The woman scratched her cheek scars. Aozora, for the moment, was silent, processing information and reflecting on the situation. She had no doubt that Suniaya’s military would be a force to be reckoned with, even in a more primitive state. “As for the might of your warriors, I don’t doubt it. If the Overlady was impressed with it last time, far be it from me to argue. Heard plenty of good things about ‘em after the war. Judgin’ from you, they’re probably patriotic enough, too. Oh yeah, gotta ask somethin’. As Intermittent Head of Diplomacy, it’s my responsibility to inquire into your diplomatic situation. Goin’ back to old alignments and all?” Sumāto chuckled a little, somehow finding something in that statement amusing. “Our ‘diplomatic situation’ - if you want to call it that, is pretty much nonexistent. You are really the first from the outside to not only contact us, but actually set foot on Sunaiyan soil since we came back. And we have not forgotten our shared history, despite our changing priorities. The Emperor has the final call on whether to enter into a beneficial alliance or allyship, but I have no doubt in my mind that he would be agreeable on being friends with your country again.” Both Aozora and Tokiko nodded at that. The Overlady was glad to hear that their relations could be retained. Even if this Sunaiya was different...she couldn’t deny that this was indeed Sunaiya. And for all the sacrifices this land and its people and made for her...she would never forget how much the Suniayans had aided her, whether through wisdom offered from their leader, or military support during the Nightmare. “I’m very glad of that,” she said at least, now looking directly at Sumāto. “I know I’ve been rather critical since coming here, but...this is Sunaiya. I would hate to lose such a valuable relationship. Even if things are different now, our past cannot be forgotten or forsaken.” She paused for a moment. “Speaking of differences...isn’t the climate here a lot different than before? That must require a lot of adjustment…” “It is, yes.” Sumāto began. “The climate here is warmer and more tropical than what we had before, and the effects are immediate and noticeable. For one, we now have large swaths of jungle interspaced between our growing farmland and towns, and we are expected to have occasional monsoon-level rainfall during the summer and fall seasons. Another is the average temperature difference of almost ten celsius, which can feel even hotter when you factor in the rampant humidity of this tropical rain-zone. Thankfully our traditional diet of rice, soy, fish, bolivine, and other staples are mostly unaffected. Some have even chosen to take advantage of the warmer weather to grow things we had to import back in old Sunaiya. It’s not really good or bad, just... different. The months we spent in heaven allowed us to become acclimated to this new climate long before we settled for permanent. And even if the gods did not grace us with that time of preparation, we would have adapted anyways.” Aozora thought about the matter for a moment. At very least, they had not been forced into a barren wasteland or a frozen expanse. It was change, but it appeared as though it was a change that could be conquered fairly easily, even if not for the blessing they had received. It would take some getting used to...but that’s all. But that’s just the physical, the climate of this place. What about the nation itself? The technology has changed, but what about other aspects? There’s probably even more spirituality...is the social structure still similar? “I suppose the changes do have some benefits. I have to ask, though...what about Sunaiya as a whole? I know you shun a lot of advanced technology, have more magic, have a different climate, that sort of thing...but what of social stuff? The way society works? How much different has that become?” Sumāto had to pause before answering, see as this is a more complex question. “...That part has not so much changed as much as... become more focused? I’m really not the best when it comes to listening to a nation’s heartbeat, but we are more... attuned to how we used to be. The usual traits of honor, merit, respect, and unity are still there, but... are more pronounced in people’s lives, I guess would be the best way to summarize it. We also love our traditions more.” Just as she was about to move on, the motorcade passed by a small Shinto-style temple within a minor township. “...And our respect and reverence of the Kurieitā - our creators, the gods, have become much stronger because of the war and the aftermath. They deserve our thankfulness, our faithfulness, our praise and worship... they are our parents, and we are their children. It’s only natural for us to have a closer relationship with the very beings responsible for our continued existence, don’t you think?” She sounded very sure and sincere in her beliefs, as though expecting Aozora and Tokiko to give a respectful confirmation - before realizing they really have opposite opinions about religion and higher powers. “Oh my... Apologies, Lady Aozora and Tokiko, I just forgot you and your people have very different opinions on spirituality. Maybe it would be better if we visited this topic another time, agreed? Please?” Sumāto backtracked, her mind rolling with embarrassment and anxiety at potentially offending her guests. “It’s something we have different views on,” said Aozora. “I mean, for you, it seems as though divine will preserved and restored your nation. For us, supposedly divine will led to...devastation. Devastation that will probably be felt for decades to come.” Aozora let out a sigh, glancing at Tokiko as she did so. The Intermittent Head of Diplomacy seemed to have a blank expression for the moment. “But moving on from that...I’ve asked a lot of questions, but I do feel as though while Suniaya has changed enormously, Kyoki Chudoku too has adjusted to different circumstances, just less extremely. There isn’t all too much I can say on that, though. The climate is the same, the people are the same...about the only major difference would be that we have a tenth district. One on this very continent, actually. In terms of culture, things have been similar since the war’s conclusion. More people seem insistent on shūkei,” she said, glancing at her associate’s obvious scars, “and there have been more…tengokutankyu out there. But we’re not discussing religion, so I won’t go into that. It’s...fascinating to see how much this place has changed. Even if I’m not certain on everything...it’s a lot better to be this way than it is to be a wasteland. I wonder if the leadership is different…” Sumāto shook her head calmly. “Our system of governance has honestly not been changed in the last four centuries. We have the Emperor, with his council of advisors; the administrative overseers that govern each major city and province, the military’s own leadership, and the clan elders that run their own internal familial affairs. Correct me if I’m wrong, Lady Aozora, but don’t you have a system similar to our own? You have... ‘Tenshi’ that advise you on matters they specialize in, right?” The Supreme Overlady of All Reality thought for a moment before answering. “Almost. Tenshi refers to the those imbued with arcane capabilities. I think the word you’re looking for is ‘Densetsu’. Those serve as advisors, specialist overseers and district governors. In some cases, anyway…” Aozora became quiet for a moment as she reflected on how almost half of her Densetsu were...no longer performing their roles. Shinokage and Jinsoku had been killed, and Tenai and Kiku...they were still trapped within a state of psychological torment as a result of attempts at Tengokuren indoctrination. She glanced at Tokiko. “Due to certain...extenuating circumstances...some of those roles are taken up now by non-Densetsu, but trusted personnel nonetheless. Tokiko, for example, is neither a tenshi nor a Densetsu, but she serves as Intermittent Head of Diplomacy. From what I know, our systems are similar. A single figure in command, with numerous subordinates and advisors to offer their own expertise on various matters. Though of course, family doesn’t come into Chudokuren governance.” She stared out of the window for a moment. I have to ask… “What of the Emperor himself? Has he changed much since...last time? Or should I wait to find that out for myself?” Sumāto quickly raised a hand to her mouth in an attempt to stifle a laugh, though a soft giggle still escaped her lips. “Ah... are you asking about his personality, or his power? Personality wise, I believe you would be surprised by how little he’s changed since all these recent events. He’s really still the man you know; he just puts on a show of being the Emperor whenever he’s in public, because all Sunaiyan Emperors are expected to embody the best traits of the nation. To be seen as strong, disciplined, wise, honorable, and proud, for the most part. At the same time, he also has to rein in on his young impulses whether in public or not; for example, he can’t just go off leading military operations from the front like he used to. This is because he’s expected to lead from the throne like every wise Emperor before him, as a lord over the whole nation. Although part of me feels he’s still going to make rash decisions when issues become personal... Oh well.” She shrugged her shoulders, moving on. “On the latter, his powers have changed somewhat. The gods had blessed him with a change to better suit his role as an overall leader and protector of the people, by giving him power over light and fire instead of darkness and shadows. I myself have seen him practice with his new powers for a little while; he’s become stronger overall. Which feels somewhat strange considering he’s not supposed to be in direct fights. Maybe they knew he would still go off on his own. Hm...” She contemplated the idea. Aozora considered what she’d been told. So, he’s effectively the same man, just with different responsibilities and powers. That’s comforting. I’m glad to know he’s still...well, him. Of course he is, what else would he be? Aozora didn’t feel well qualified to comment on rashness or things becoming personal, considering her own reaction to such situations. While it was true she didn’t lead armies into battle if it wasn’t necessary, nor did she risk her life over mere entertainment...she’d still gone on person in numerous occasions to eliminate suspected or confirmed threats, and as for things becoming personal…When those I care about are threatened, those who threaten them tend to die. It’s a correlation I have to enforce. To do otherwise would be...I couldn’t do it. “So...he has power of fire, now? Unexpected, but fascinating. Quite a lot of fire-wielders out there, isn’t there? Myself included, I suppose...I’m glad he’s been able to handle all of these changes well. So much has changed, yet...some things never do.” After some time, the motorcade began to approach the city of Haikyapitaru. Having adjusted to sights of lush expanse or minor settlements, Aozora was surprised to see such an urban area encompass so much land. The city was built upon a massive hill, enormous walls encircling the inner third. With such terrain and defences, the entire city felt like a colossal medieval fortress. “Impressive, isn’t it.” Sumāto commented as she smiled proudly ahead. “This is actually an approximate replication of how the original capital would’ve been like at this time, if it hadn’t been burned down near the end of the Warlords Period some four hundred years ago. The gods are awesome architects.” Despite her reservations on the matter, Aozora was forced to concede that it was indeed quite impressive. “Quite the reconstruction, then. Impressive indeed…” As the vehicle passed through an entrance to Haikyapitaru’s central citadel, the surrounding crowds shifted from ordinary people to soldiers in uniforms. Towards the centre of this bastion was some kind of palace, once more resembling a feudal castle placed at towering height, its foundations built upon the apex of the hill which gave this capital its name. Aozora was no stranger to imposing buildings- she herself lived in a spire, after all- but she’d never before seen an entire city seeming like such a monolithic structure. As the motorcade grew nearer to the palace, the vehicles began to slow, an iron gate before them. As the vehicles stopped, Sumāto exited first, choosing to open the rear passenger door for her guests. “Lady Aozora, Miss Tokiko, if you and your entourage would follow me, please; we will see the Watashi no Kōtei to Hogo-sha. I can spare a little time for some last questions if need be, but I think the Emperor would likely be anxious to see an old friend again.” She explained as the gate was opened for them, continuing on ahead as they followed. Neither Aozora nor Tokiko spoke, instead taking in their surroundings, though each nodded as the Chudokuren departed the vehicle. Passing through the defences led fortifications to give way to a kind of courtyard, and beyond that, an enormous sequence of steps which led up to the palace proper. With the vehicle having halted, Aozora had time to fully examine the personnel in the surrounding area. Their elaborate armour made them appear as especially distinguished warriors. Some kind of elite guard, maybe? She heard the faint sound of the portable arcanometer detecting magical activity. The guards are magical? Many things here are, it appears, but that strongly? She was reminded of her own Gomon Hito bodyguards, each of whom possessed control over pain, although their armour was of a less ceremonial and elaborate nature.
