ANCHORAGE FACILITY, ALASKA

Outside with the Enclave forces, Nancy the Assaultron, who has intently been watching the Enclave Vertibirds as they landed and carefully watched the soldiers disembark, happily perks up and walks over to Colonel Adrian Radec.

Nancy - "Why hello sugar! I'm Nancy, my boss, Mr. Edgar Anette III has approved and set up this operation! He lived before the War, and was attempting to create a system to prevent a Nuclear Armageddon. One of his close workers, now known as the 'Jade Emperor' sabotaged these efforts. While Mr. Anette believed him to be dead for a long time, we uncovered evidence that he is alive and attempting to rebuild Anette's facility and turn them into a super-weapon. This here is one of the two main facilities that Mr. Anette established. It is the property of Walter Barnes, a support of Mr. Anette. We believe that he is alive and in the facility but we had previously lost communications with this base. Some of the other members of our team are working to clear the facility and we need to secure it as rapidly as possible in case the Jade Emperor strikes. I see you brought some big guns! Those will definitely come in handy."

Revolutionary middleland

Middle the awesome, Middle the mighty, Middle the far-sighted (3 of 3)

While securing the agricultural heartlands of south-eastern Kansas was a relatively bloodless task, there had been a small holdout of republicans near the remnants of Fort Scott. Everywhere the Middle's guerrillas went, things were completely looted and destroyed. Houses were emptied out and burned, farms pillaged, and entire towns torched down in the name of de-urbanization. For this final battle, Middle was not afraid to reveal the brunt of it's military forces. 6,200 men, women, and children of Middle's militant force marched in several columns carrying irregular weaponry but matching shabby black clothes and red scarves. The rest guarded the other occupied areas. The other garrison was deep, but only had about 1,000 soldiers and minutemen entrenched in the region.

The townspeople looked around them to see a sea of black and red. Child soldiers carrying improvised rocket launchers, lines of naturally camoflauged men and women holding pipe and needle guns, several cows bearing light machineguns, a light cavalry company. Hundreds of flagbearers holding the unusual flag of Middle. This fight would not be won. They would certainly all die. A canister was shot into the town, bearing a simple request: unconditional surrender.

Months of fighting against an unknown foe, having hometowns ravaged and loved ones conscripted or killed en masse. It all culminated here. The rifles the garrison held trembled as they saw yet a second wave of reinforcements come through the golden plains. Platoon after platoon fearfully raised their arms, tears streaming down their cheeks until there was nobody left to fight. The encirclement grew tighter until the men and women found themselves forcibly restrained and thrown into the very trenches they were defending a mere moment ago. Screams and gunshots resounded as hundreds upon hundreds died in volleys. From mothers clutching their babies to the elderly were broken down and shot in the trenches. Only the babies were spared, for they would make good soldiers.

An unusual flag was torn down from the single flagpole standing over the city: red and white stripes surrounding a blue bar with 50 stars. It fell to the dirt shamefully as the last group was lined up against the already overfull trenches. They looked back to see the red and yellow of Middle's organization be raised, massive and intimidating.

"Middle most awesome, middle far-sighted! Fatherly middle, good true. Most virtue-ful good tiding Middle! Long live!" A male screeched upon the podium once the flag hit its peak height.

"Middle most awesome! Middle most far-sighted! Middle most mighty! Middle most awesome..." The crowd chanted, raising their fists in the air, waving their flags, or thrusting their guns to the sky. The last 50 survivors clenched their eyes shut to stop the flow of tears as the last volley hit the backs of their skulls, sending them face first into a pile of bodies already being doused with gasoline.

War in the West

As Imperial Forces push south from Mount Vernon, they steamed through Holy Imperial Forces in Saint John the historic town that made the Knights of Saint John famous. Having both a numerical and equipment superiority over the Holy Imperial Forces made the fighting less brutal that is until the main body of Imperial soldiers made contact with Holy Knight forces just outside of the Port of Landsdale where the forces came under barrage from both The Essex river frigate and the Swallow a river gunboat which exposed their left flank and made it extremely difficult for Imperial Forces to maintain a front against the Holy Imperial forces driving north from the port city. After a day of intense fighting on the outskirts of Landsdale, Imperial Artillery were able to perform counter battery operations sinking the Swallow and heavily damaging the The Essex forcing the warship to leave the area in order to find a safe dock to conduct repairs at. In a joint task force both Imperial Armor and Imperial Air Force elements were able to rut out the stubborn defenders at Landsdale and force Holy Knight elements into the open where Imperial ground troops were able to encircle them and dispatching them. Holy Imperial forces quickly dug in along the Saint Michael line committing to trench warfare in an attempt to stifle the advancing gains of the Imperial war machine. In total the Imperial forces only suffered two hundred and fifty nine casualties in the initial invasion of the Holy Empire however sustained four hundred and eighty one casualties during the combat around Port of Landsdale. With the former capitol and the seat of power for the Theocracy only twenty miles away the push towards the final objective was reinforced with armor, artillery, and air components of the Imperial Military. Tensions were high as the Holy Imperial forces were ordered to not give one inch more to the heretical enemy forces. Time would only tell who would win in this small conflict which could dictate in which direction the civil war would go.

Private Summer Hughes, 2nd Holy Rifles Militia Battalion

Summer looked over the top of the trench line as she attempted to see what was happening out there. Just as bullets started to dig into the mud around her a fellow soldier pulled her down and scolded the young private.

"You trying to get your head blown off? Ya silly goober" the fellow soldier rushed off to link up with his unit just before the first shell exploded in the trench line where Summer was sending her backwards into a hastily constructed bunker and vaporizing one of her comrades. As she attempted to stumble to her feet, several knights rushed passed and manned some positions as the shelling was over just as quickly as it had started.

"To your positions, to your positions!" cried out an officer. Then sudden terror came across everyone's face as the grinding and rumblings of tanks could be heard across the battlefield accompanied by the low hum of aircraft about to dive bomb their positions. Everything went quiet for Summer as she witnessed her comrades being blown up, shot apart, or break down mentally. She had join the local militia to defend her community against feral ghouls...not fight against her fellow Jacobites. Her hands were trembling as she raised her hunting rifle over the top of the trench and began firing at the shadowy figures that were advancing towards her. Her screams were only drowned out by the automatic fire of a Bren gun to her right and the incoming shrieks of the tank shells.

A small group of Holy Knights gathered around and began barking orders...something about going over the top.

"Gather yourself soldiers of the Holy Empire. God is watching us today, God is with us on this field of battle and to glory we charge! Fix bayonets! CHARGE!" as the first soldiers clambered over the top of the trench line they were immediately gunned down; one soldier took a tank shell directly ripping his body in half. His legs toppling back into the trench on top of Private Summer. She cowered in fear underneath the dead bodies as the screams, yelling, and gun fire suddenly went quiet. After what felt like a life time she moved out from underneath the body she was hiding under and looked around the trench which was turned into a mass grave for its former occupants. As she looked for her weapon a voice behind her barked for her to put her hands in the air and to come out of the trench. She began trembling violently as she was pushed to the ground with a few other of her comrades while several Imperial soldiers held them at gun point.

"What should we do with em sir?" one of the soldiers looked towards a man who was obviously an officer. He simply pulled out his side arm and one by one executed each of the prisoners, when he pressed the muzzle to the back of Summer's head she began crying profusely and threw up a little when the gun clicked. After a leisurely reload the officer stuck the barrel against the back of her head.

"Please don't, I don't" her body slumped forward as the round went through her head. The Imperial army had orders to not take prisoners. Tanks, artillery pieces, and columns of Imperial troops marched over the corpses of the fallen and through the hole that had been punched through the trench line. The prize was now in sight as Holy Imperial Forces retreated back towards the former capitol. Would not be long now until the fall of Jacotown and the security of more territory for the Empire of Jacotown.

This is Saturn calling...
This is Saturn calling...

And we're on the air. Good day, one and all, and welcome back to the Cygnus radio hour, coming in over the airwaves as loud as a trumpeter swan telling you to get away from its nest. I'm Lilly Kalten, broadcasting from rocky Saturna island, and I'd like to welcome you all to our show, one of the few things in the wastes that's guaranteed not to try to kill you. Today's show is going to be a bit of a long one, since I'm stuck inside until that goat gives up on having my hat for afternoon tea. It's still staring at me through the window, I think I'm going to have nightmares. Gotta say, up here on Warburton Pike sure is a fine view, but we at Saturn station can't say we don't miss town life just a smudge. Nothing beats being gathered 'round the fireplace with your folks. Say, you listeners out there, Nootkan or mainlander, I've got a favour to ask. If you're in a situation where you've got neighbours and you can trust any of 'em, wish them a very merry christmas, an excellent festivus, happy enchilada, or whatever you all celebrate. Putting it politely, this winter's shaping up to be rather brisk. Why, when I went outside to the woodpile, I could have sworn the wind was fast enough to cut like a knife. I sure hope it isn't too radioactive. Oh, here's Carter with lunch, a mug of clam and potato stew. Say, 'cart, why don't you tell our listeners today's programme?

Sure thing. Hello everyone, hi mom. I'm Carter Cartwright, finest chef on this island of ten. If you've tuned into us before, you know the drill. If you're tuning in for the first time, the broadcasts have the same format every week. Lilly complains about life for an hour, story time, some local news, then we wrap it up with some music. And to tell today's story, we have a very special guest, mister-

Hey! I'm in charge here, I do the introducing!

No fair, I've been on for like thirty seconds!

Just stew the stew, stew stewer.
...AND Hello again, everyone, we're back on the air, unless that was the self-destruct button instead of the mute button. Our guest today is a sailor aboard the ship Satsuma, Mister Giles Giles! Welcome aboard, sir!

Thanks for inviting me, kid. As long as we're not invading anybody else for a while, I've got a part-time gig harvesting caviar around here. Got a couple cans of the stuff for you guys, mary chris miss and all that.

Wow, merry christmas to you too! Did you have a safe trip over?

Aye, nice bit of breeze you got going. Damned goat ate my rock collection, but never mind that.

Oh dear. Same goat that's staring at us through the window, I suppose? Don't think its blinked even once. ANYway, it's storytime, so tell me, mister giles, what tale have you for our listeners?

Alright. Listen careful-like, folks, and light a lamp so you don't get too frightened. Way back in the day, God was visiting Port Hardy - long story, that - and found the town completely lifeless, even though smoke was still coming up through the chimneys. Well, lifeless, that is, except for a little boy. God asked him what was going on, and the boy said that there was a monster in the creek. Tsigis, a bull-headed creature living under the sand, with a long tongue that snatched up anyone who went to get water. The boy was very thirsty. God placed his belt, a two-headed serpent, around the boy, and told him not to worry, to come down to the creek and get something to drink. Now the lad was pretty frightened, but eventually he was talked into walking to the creek. Then the monster ate him. God shrugged and started singing a song, and as He did, the two-headed belt started to move within the monster. Soon, the belt forced Tsigis to the surface, and made it throw up everyone it had eaten.

Things weren't just plums and fairies after that, though. The boy was alright, but most of the townsfolk were corpses or bones. So God turned to the boy, and said 'not to worry, they are only sleeping'. Then they reassembled the bones to their proper skeletons. When that was done, God poured holy water on them, and the people all came back to life. The townsfolk were all panicking a tadge about being eaten by a giant monster, so God turned to Tsigis, who was still lying on the shore, and threw him pretty far. Some say all the way to China. And, well, bob's your uncle.

Indeed he is, how'd you know? But, uh, moral of the story, don't drink water. That was a swell tale, Giles, and thank you for sharing it with us.

Ah, y'know, it's just one of those ones everyone tells their kids to give 'em a spook.

Sure is, sir, sure is. And now, the news. It seems that telegraph cove have themselves a bona fide folk hero. That man is Sergeant Christopher Sandro, who is currently missing, presumed dead after trapping himself inside a cave system in order to kill a large bear known as Otsosson. Spelunkers are trying to find the body, and have found a good deal of other corpses from the immediate postwar years. But until they positively locate Sandro's corpse, it seems that the locals will continue to claim his existence and performance of numerous heroic deeds.

In Victoria, presumably the home of most of our listeners, we've also been hearing a few tales of unverifiable repute. Questions have been raised before on how the old spaghetti factory has managed to stay in operation since the prewar days. And the answer, according to a group of students from the adjacent schoolhouse, is a 'void of infinite spaghetti'. Undoubtedly some sort of blood pact was made with unearthly creatures in order to ensure that the infernal device kept cranking out noodles from nothing but the timeless void of space. Probably involving human sacrifices. Either that, or the spaghetti family are an inventive and perseverant sort who have fought for their business harder than many have fought for love, their country, or their religion. I'll let you all judge which one it is for yourselves.

The political attacks on the agricultural adjustment programme have grown, almost but not quite to the point of blows. Alderman Firestone, whose brother owns the biggest share in the wine business, publicly derided plans to seize vineyard land for grazing, and for the large-scale breeding of dairy animals. "Livestock" he said. "Can they really be called livestock if they're dead inside?"

You could say that the capital was officially moved today. Yes, it was declared months ago, but the eternal flame of the republic was officially moved from Korroyo, to the lobby of the partially-repaired assembly building in Victoria. They're taking no chances - the serjeant-at-arms is posting a continuous watch of that hurricane lantern. I've heard that the sentence for allowing it to go out is keelhauling, but fortunately that's never been tested.

There's a new trend when it comes to home decor. Some houses tend to have the likenesses of faces, either carved or painted. Well, it has become popular lately to add a 'beard' of moss, or a flowerbed.

From 'the patchwork' dockyards, we bring you news of a launch, or rather, a relaunch. The Uchuck, or, 'healing waters', entered service with the black ball line three days ago, reclaiming its prewar status as the workhorse of the west coast. Despite the near-complete rebuild and retooling for steam power, the Uchuck still has a few reminders of her service in a war fought over two hundred years ago, in particular the bridge's blastproof windows.

A new species has been discovered! The 'rocket salmon' seems to have mutated for itself the ability to travel upstream, past debris and refuse, by means of a natural water-rocket! I'll bet that makes them a little tougher for the bears to catch them in mid-air, but I hope it doesn't make it too hard for the fishmonger to find his next meal.

We've got some news from Lintukoto, the planned city in the mountains. A bit of a 'flight' seems to have begun of a good deal of rich farm owners, who have been seeing their monopolies evaporate due to the recent expansions of farming. Instead, starting with the prosperous Bacon family, many well-to-do houses have been observed leaving Victoria and trying to preserve their fortunes among the ridges. An anonymous source has reported that the Bacons in particular plan to make a living selling canned water, and it wouldn't take a genius to speculate that others might pick up that game. After all, Lintukoto is home to 'the fountains', some of the safest drinking water on the island, and possibly in the wasteland.

Speaking of cans, the new cannery in Korroyo is picking up profits exponentially. Fish - in a can. Beans - in a can. Their newspaper ads say it gives it a 'gourmet metallic' taste, and no, they're not paying me to tell you that. Most significant of all is the resumed production of Bark!, a local root beer made with spruce nettles. The return of commercially available 'pop' has been somewhat hindered by their lackluster advertisement campaigns. Withdrawn and presumably burned were posters advertising bark as 'like moonshine, but for kids'. Nowadays, as you turn onto robson street, you may be accosted by a vendor asking you 'if you've ever wanted to drink a tree'. Beware.

And, for the weather these next few months, I have here a sheet of paper with the predictions on it. It, uh, seems to be scrawled in desperate red lettering, and just reads 'bad' in all capital letters. My advice is stay indoors if you can, folks.

But, of course, not everyone can stay indoors. Most everyone stockpiles firewood, but this is shaping up to be a pretty nasty winter, so most lumberjacks will be kept out pretty late to make sure everyone else stays warm. ...Which reminds me of the perfect song to conclude our broadcast. I know, I know, everything reminds of a song, but this one is special. My discs have been passed down the family, you know - they were the one thing my grandfather wouldn't trade away, not even as famine stalked the land and there were stories of people eating their neighbours. Here's 'the frozen logger' to close us out.

Jacotown

Louisville, Horatio Held Territory, Kingdom of Jacotown

Mary looked out of the window of her house at a patrol of Royal soldiers as they made their way through the street stopping anyone who looked suspicious or were up to no good. When the front door opened up suddenly she raised her pistol at the uniformed officer who held up his hand quickly.

"Easy now, princess. It's only me, I've got news from our source with in the intelligence corps. They know who you are and where you live and are about to come arrest you. We have to hurry. Where are your guards?" he closed the door quickly and grabbed a backpack from underneath her bed as he began packing food, clothing, and water in it for her.

"They should be upstairs, how do they know who I am? That is the sole reason why my mother moved us to Louisville is to escape the Fiefdom. Now with the King dead I thought I would be able to remain here in peace and simply be forgotten about." she closed the curtain and yelled something upstairs to her retinue who came bumbling downstairs with their gear already on.

"I do not know princess but we have to hurry before.." yelling outside made the officer quiet as he walked over to the window and peered through it. As soon as he opened the curtain the back of his head exploded as bullets ripped through the sheet metal and wood walls of the house. Mary dived onto the floor next to the corpse of the officer and clutched her head with her hands. Two of her guards tossed grenades out of the now unhinged door before firing into the street. Another guard was struck in the chest as he attempted to find some decent cover.

"Are you alright princess?" one of the burly men asked as he dragged Mary by her arm onto her feet and rushed her out of the house. The gun fight raged on as she made it to the back door with her guard and over a fence into another back yard of an abandoned house where several horses were already saddled and ready to go.

"Fort Knox miss, we have to go to the RAR they are the only ones who will keep you safe" a quick burst from his sub machine gun cut down a royal soldier who had hopped over the fence dropping his corpses like a rag doll. Several more explosions and yells from her house indicated that they had finally made it inside. She and her body guard quickly mounted and rode quickly from the area. The crack of a rifle was accompanied by the sudden spurt of blood that covered her face and body as her horse had been shot in the neck from a sniper.

"Princess!" her body guard picked her up and simply laid her over his lap and urged the horse into a sprint. Several more shots were taken at them but they managed to get to the relative safety of the burned out suburbs. It was a long ride to Fort Knox and as they arrived they could hear the Royal Air Force in the distance looking for them from the air. Her guard quickly dismounted and raised his weapon in the air and yelled at the gate guards.

"Please help us!" as he yelled Mary quietly slipped off of the horse and slowly walked towards her body guard and the gate guards. She was still covered in blood and looked traumatized. Little did she know that this was only the first step in her new life that would dictate the outcome of the Jacotown Civil War.

Little did she know that this was only the first step in her new life that would dictate the outcome of the Jacotown Civil War.

The guards balk momentarily but when they see the blood and her walking unsteadily allow her through the force field. A medic is rushed over to take a look at her while the commander of the guard questions the body guard.

"What happened?" he asked.

Master: "Quite Impressive! They say that as men grow bigger so do their toys. This is proof."

The master laughed warmly.

Master: "I think a demonstration would be excellent! I am rather eager to see how they perform!"

The Führer: "You heard him Colonel!"
Colonel: "Jawohl!"
The Colonel sends for his best tank crew and they heard to the practice area.

The Führer: "I know the Federals don't have anything that could stand up to that kind of firepower."

Mary looks at the medic then to her body guard who grimaced a little before answering.

"The Royals tried to kill her, tried to kill us." he pulled out a cigarette for himself and the princess and lit both before handing her the cigarette which she shakily accepted. She took a puff and then looked at the medic.

"I need to talk to your commanding officer please. I have information that is very important," her voice was quiet and shaky as she took another drag on the cigarette.

Master: "Impressive! I am certain they don't by all accounts of the Scout reports. They rely on rather primitive technology compared to Pre-War standards."

The Master Looked back at the Tanks.

Master: "They are quite beautiful. So is this land of yours. You have done a wonderful job if maintaining its beauty quite well. It is finally nice to meet an equal in this wasteland Führer."

The medic looks at the commander of the guard who nods and pulls out his radio. "Perimeter 3 to Command, be advised, we have a refugee wishing to speak with you, on her way now." He turns to Mary and says, "Follow me."

He leads her to the base commander's office, where Lt. Colonel Frentin resides. Mary is ushered into his office, which is spartan and crumbling but at least clean. "Good morning, ma'am," he says. "I'm told you escaped an assassination attempt and came here to deliver sensitive intelligence. I'm extremely curious as to what you have to say."

The Führer: "It is quite beautiful isn't it. It has been a mild winter this year, but I've always found beauty in the snow blanketing the ground and trees. I do have more to show you."
They stand and, once again, take the convoy to Selfridge Air Force base.
The base commander greets them also surprised by the visit. They go to the hangers where the Master sees multiple F-4 Phantoms.
The Führer: "The tanks are impressive and do spell doom for my enemies but these are the paper it's written on. The Luftwaffe is the greatest air power in the wasteland."

Her bodyguard closely followed her eye balling everyone they had passed along the way to the colonel's office. She slowly walked in and stood in front of the colonel with but she looked at the ground. Her body guard gave her an encouraging bump.

"Chin up princess," he forced a smile at the colonel before she spoke softly but inaudibly. A slight cough and she spoke up slightly more.

"I am Princess Mary Singleton, younger sister of King Robert the Gentle who until recently was the king of Jacotown. I am the rightful heir to the throne of the Fiefdom of Jacotown," she quickly looked back down at the ground trying to ignore the fact that she was still covered in blood.

"May I have some water please?" she asked quietly

The colonel pulls out a bottle of purified water from his desk and hands it to her. "My condolences on your loss," he remarks. "I don't follow the goings-on of the wasteland much, but I understand things are quite... unsettled over there. Rest assured, you are safe in the RAR."

She took the bottle and drank half of it before giving the rest to her body guard who glared at the colonel.

"Sir do you understand who you are talking to? She is the heir, the last heir to the throne of Jacotown. If she can be crowned then we can end this civil war quickly. We just need the help of..." he was cut off from finishing by Mary who simply raised her hand.

"I am not asking for help from the RAR, it is not their fight and if I was a citizen of the RAR I wouldn't want to send my son to fight in a foreign war. Thank you colonel, If you allow us to stay I am sure we can find a way to pay for our way until things blow over in the Fiefdom." she finally looked up and her eyes pierced the colonel's.
