you should engage, that way both perspectives could have a voice. if any idea doesn't have pushback telling it what's acceptable and what's not, it tends to radicalize. that's how a certain austrian painter rose to power in mid-20th century

the right and left are two sides of the same coin. without one, the other tends to grow more extreme in its beliefs

Oh my God bro, I'm not disagreeing with you but you reminded me of that heated debate I had in my uni that led to nowhere. It made me want to throw myself out the window.

yea, that's the worst. i like to debate because then you can have a disagreement and see where your beliefs align, but some people are so stubborn that they refuse to even listen to you

The basis for me: gay people deserve equal rights, they should deserve to have a chance at leading fulfilled lives, up to and including relationships.

Dude fr. The guy challenged my views, I tried to explain but he kept interrupting me and already reaching to conclusions when I wasn't in the middle of the reasons as to why I'm voting Y instead of X. I made mistakes too but it frustrated me so much, especially since we have people like that in democratic societies. We did end up calming down but none of our opinions changed.

Maybe next person I debate with will be more open minded, who knows.

i completely agree with you. the government should have no say in what gay people get to do, since that's really not any of their business

the church is a slightly different matter. the church is allowed to disagree with them, but ultimately should not be able to force them to live like they're not gay (there is no real moral way to do so)

Truly, double life. Welcome I suppose.

Quite an interesting one to do, although guess I won't ever need to change the flag.

Church was lovely today.

I have glanced at the current conversation, and will not be allowing it to kill the vibe.

the worst thing is how your energy level tends to follow the other person and both parties get emotional. glad you can see their mistakes, sometimes the hardest part is actually articulating what they did wrong

Yeah, at least. Afterwards, I then said to myself "now I know how it feels like to be my brother".

My brother is very politically active, and tends to get pissed off easily in debates.

I am by no means trying to join the original discussion, but something to note for the meta-discussion: sometimes a subject is emotional and personal . . . for one half of the conversation.

For example (and again I am not trying to join the original discussion), when you have a debate about how many rights gay people should have, you may notice that the gay people in the room are a bit emotional. Similarly, if you were debating how many rights women should have, you might notice the women in the room getting a bit emotional. If you were debating how many rights people of colour should have . . . you get the idea.

Point being, "let's both treat this debate as an intellectual sport and not have feelings about it" is not always a reasonable expectation for everyone. That's not to say that things should be allowed to devolve into screaming matches, but a shaking voice and some uncomfortably personal anecdotes do have a place at times.
