Simple answer, I don’t know and I don’t have any ideas. To a point though, all the Ostar-gothic culture I’ve written down and created and stolen for some parts is post-migration.

Also....

What is an 'AI' ?

You may have stumbled across the term 'AI', this refers to a nation that is not controlled by a user. These nations often appear as a result of internal conflicts, users leaving or as a consequence of peace treaties. These nations exist in a 'grey area' for Valsora and the rules around them can be complicated and convuluted. If you have a query relating to an AI nation, please get in touch with the Cartography Council.

Welcome to the world of Valsora

Hello, and welcome! I created this guide with the intention of welcoming you to Valsora, and helping you make your claim. Valsora is the greatest map NationStates has to offer, with over 6 years of history, we've seen thousands of nations stake their claim to be the best there is. From the legends of old, to the veterans and the newcomers of today, there's tens of thousands of characters, stories and wonders to unearth.

Valsora is the official map of The East Pacific's RMB, sharing its status as official regional map with Urth, our friends from the Forums. Valsora presents a relatively fast-paced roleplay environment, based on the regional message board (RMB). No matter what you're here for, something is always happening. Whether you're here to conquer your enemies, trade with partners, or simply chart your nation's story, there's something for everyone here.

So you're new to all this, and it sounds fun, and you'd like to join! Joining is easy, keep reading, and I'll walk you through everything you need to know.

Brainstorming your nation

So all of this sounds great, but how do you fit into this universe? What's your story, who are your people, where do they come from, what's life like over yonder? These are all the questions you'll need to ask yourself before sending in your claim. Before copying that claim template and getting to work, you need to get a good grasp of your nation.

The biggest question, of course, is where you want your nation to be. Valsora has seven continents to choose from, all based on different unique cultural backgrounds. Ensure you choose the continent that best matches your nation's culture and background. We wouldn't want the French in Orientalis or the Chinese in Usnistan.

Ok, now you've taken a look at this map, and you've glanced at the Political Map to see who's where, and what spaces are available. You've found your spot, now let's worldbuild your country. When submitting your claim, you'll need to give a brief introduction to your nation for the Cartographers, just so we know who and what you are. It doesn't need to be too in-depth yet, but so long as you've got an idea (i.e. russian nation ravaged by recent civil war, or thriving mongolian kingdom modernising into the 21st century). Once you've got this down, we can get into the fun stuff.

Population

The first statistic you'll need to figure out before sending in your claim is your population! Most nations on Valsora start with 25k - 30k pixels, and the general starting population aims to be around 20-30 million people, we don't accept much higher than this. If you're a densely packed baby-making machine in Orientalis, then you're always allowed to bump this up a little, and equally if you're a group of Mongolian warriors roaming the steppes of Yastreovakia, maybe we can bump down that number a bunch. At the end of the day, you know what's a good fit for you.

A lot of people join the map thinking they need to max out their population and economic figures to get a good headstart, a lot of people want to be the biggest and the strongest very quickly. I'll tell you now, don't worry about that. Valsora is much more concerned with storytelling and writing as opposed to who has the biggest numbers. Your nation will grow gradually as you expand more and more, don't feel pressured to be the biggest from the start.

Once you have your population number in mind, let's move on to a part that scares a lot of people at first, the economy.

GDP and GDP per Capita for dummies

Coming up with your economic figures is a daunting task for many new arrivals, you're likely surprised we're asking for this when you've only just conceived your nation and its identity. Don't sweat it, while it seems complicated and difficult at first, we have tools (and this guide!) available to make the process super easy.

Let's firstly get the terminology explained. GDP stands for 'Gross Domestic Product', in a grossly oversimlified explanation, GDP essentially refers to the total value of the goods and services your country produces every year. Everything within your borders from tangible products like an apple or a video game, to services like a haircut or a doctor's appointment. It essentially tracks all the wealth created from these things and packages it into one big number. GDP is a big term a lot of countries use to measure how large their economy is. In Valsora, we collect that figure for a bunch of different reasons, and we write it down so both you and others can refer back to it.

The next figure is GDP per Capita, which sounds complicated, but is super easy to understand. All it involves is taking that GDP figure we just gathered, and dividing it by your population. GDP per Capita is your GDP divided by your population, essentially telling you the median (average) amount of money created by every individual person in your country. It is generally used in real life (and by us here on Valsora) as an indication of how wealthy your country is, the higher your GDP per Capita, the wealthier and better off your people are.

Another warning with these terms, you may feel inclined to make your numbers massive, to have a huge economy and an excellent standard of living to one-up your neighbours. Again, this is not necessary nor encouraged. Valsora is about storytelling, and not every country can be incredibly wealthy or populous. Being smaller and/or poorer opens up hundreds of opportunities for worldbuilding and lore, allowing for fun shared RP's, letting foreign companies invest in your country, roleplaying economic devastation after your country is torn apart by civil war or a devastating economic collapse. It is oftentimes these shortcomings which make for the most amazing stories to read. Only you can create an accurate figure for your nation, but try and be honest and reasonable, don't just pick big numbers for the hell of it.

So you've read all of this, and it's making sense, but how do you actually create these figures? Don't worry, this is where those tools and resources I mentioned earlier come in. The most handy tool we have available for this is the LinkGDP Calculator, which allows you to create both a GDP and GDP per Capita figure at the same time! All you need to do is fill in your population figure you created earlier, and then add a GDP figure. You may be confused at first as to what an accurate GDP might be for you, where do you even start? That's where the next resource comes in. The LinkWorldometer GDP per Capita rankings allow you to compare your figures with real-world countries. Say you're basing your nation off of Russia, it would then be best for you to check out this list, and have a look at Russia's GDP per capita. Currently, it's $36,485 USD. So all you need to do is tweak that GDP figure in the top box until your GDP per Capita is close-ish to Russia's. You can do the same for any nation, whether you're based on Spain, Monaco, Australia, Brazil or even Zimbabwe. When you have a GDP per Capita that works for you, tada, you also have an accurate GDP there to go with it!

Your figure doesn't need to exactly match your closest real-world relative, maybe in this example you're Russia, but a lot richer, maybe you're way poorer, edit your figure as you wish and keep comparing it with that list to see what nation your GDP per Capita closely resembles. War-torn nation plagued by conflict and collapse? Maybe your GDP per Capita is closer to Afghanistan. Are you a disgustingly wealthy tax haven? Maybe you're closer to Luxembourg or Monaco! Remember your GDP per Capita, in simple terms, shows how well-off your population are in terms of money.

If your number comes out smaller than your real-world closest relatives, don't be discouraged, remember you're only starting out and America's vast wealth wasn't simply handed to them immediately, it took expansion and centuries of work to reach those peaks. Thankfully we're on a fake online roleplaying map, so you should only need a few months, not centuries.

One important thing to remember is all our figures are done in USD! Don't use your own native currency as a reference when submitting this info, as us poor old Cartographers have no idea what your money is worth, or what the exchange rate is.

Submitting your claim

Alright, now you're ready to join the map! Joining is simple, all you need to do is scroll to the bottom of this dispatch and copy the 'New Claim Template'. Fill that template out with all the information required, and then you simply proceed to paste that filled-out template into a telegram to Valsora (this nation) and hit send! The Cartography Council doesn't have an exact schedule for when updates come out, we're volunteers after all, but the longest you should expect to wait is 7 days. So long as your claim and stats are reasonable, then you can get started on your worldbuilding while you wait to be added. While you're at it, join the LinkRMB Cafeteria discord server, where you'll find dozens of community members chatting and playing games. If you've got any questions about the claims process, or really anything about Valsora, don't be afraid to @Cartographer and we'll get back to you much quicker than we can via TG.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why do you need all of these figures?

We collect all of this information when you join to add to our Valsora Statistical Index, which logs every nation on the map, and contains all the information we collect about your nation, such as it's population, GDP and location. This information can be referred back to later by yourself, other members of the map or the Cartographers. It helps us keep track of everyone and form a better picture of the map.

Q: How many nations can I have on Valsora?

Currently we allow you to have two nations on the map at any given time, however we can allow a third if you'd like, so long as your two current accounts are active in RP and you've been on the map for a suitable length of time. We refer to any new nations or accounts as 'alt accounts', and you can find the rules on this in our Rules and Guidelines dispatch.

Q: What is a good population for me?

As noted above, the average starting population is somewhere between 20-30 million, and we unofficially encourage new joiners to stick around those figures. You can skew a little higher than this if you'd like, but we usually appreciate a justification as to why your pop is larger. Of course, you can also go much smaller than this if you happened to be a microstate or simply a much smaller nation.

Q: I'm struggling to create my own economic stats, can you help?

No problem, if you're struggling to create your own economic figures, please join the LinkRMB Cafeteria discord, and get in touch with our cartographers, who can work with you to come up with an accurate figure. Ensure you've tried to make use of the GDP/GDP per Capita calculator and compared your figures to real-world ones before asking the cartographers for help.

Q: My claim was denied, what did I do wrong?

Usually the cartographers will let you know what wasn't acceptable in your claim, however if you're unsure, simply get in touch via telegram or the discord and we'll let you know what went wrong.

Q: Can I make my claim any bigger?

Yes, lucky you for reading this far. Actually, there is a way to bargain for a larger claim when joining the map, or submitting natural expansions. Valsora, as with any roleplay map suffers from what I call 'coastline hogging syndrome'. This is an interesting phenomenon wherein nations hog the coastline, while totally ignoring vast swathes of unclaimed territory in the center of continents, leaving them empty and unappreciated. You can help to fight this terrible disease, and earn yourself a bigger claim by taking up inland territory! Of course, we encourage this only in moderation, don't make a claim 3x the size of your original by taking hoardes of territory further inland, however we'll tend to allow a slightly larger claim than usual if you're kind enough to take some territory inland instead of snaking along the coastline.

    Welcome to REWARD.

Welcome to the REWARD Homepage. REWARD is The World Assembly Development Program of The East Pacific, and covers matters of World Assembly membership, endorsements and to a lesser extent, regional security. The aim of this program is to develop and nurture a stronger endorsement capacity and scene within The East Pacific. Our region, being one of the oldest and largest in NationStates, can only continue to build on its successes if we continue to strive for stronger endorsement levels. More endorsements allow for The East Pacific to wield more power in the World Assembly, and also allow for greater regional security from external threats who may wish to do our region harm.

This dispatch contains basic information about REWARD, as well as a directory to all REWARD resources.

What is the World Assembly, and what are Delegates and Endorsements?

    • The World Assembly is essentially the United Nations of NationStates (a little trivia fact, it was originally called the United Nations until the site's creator was Linknearly sued!) It has two chambers, the General Assembly, and the Security Council. The General Assembly tends to vote on basic laws and regulations, such as civil rights protections, or agriculture regulations. The Security Council votes on more gameplay-adjacent matters, such as Commends/Condemns of on-site nations, or liberations or injunctions of entire regions. The World Assembly is made up of tens of thousands of nations, just like yours who all have their say on proposals at vote.

    • Delegates are the elected leaders of a region. The nation who has the most endorsements is elected the Delegate. The East Pacific elects delegates through a long-standing and well-structured democratic system, wherein individuals run campaigns for the Delegacy, and select a government to serve alongside them.

    • Endorsements are a crucial in-game mechanic, allowing you to 'endorse' other nations in-game to give them more influence. For most nations, they don't mean an enormous amount, and most nations will endorse a couple of people, with no real change whatsoever. Though for a region, they are absolutely vital to its success. A region's Delegate requires endorsements to remain in the position, and our regional security, the Viziers, require them to keep our region safe from external threats. To endorse a nation, simply be a member of the WA, and scroll down to the bottom of another nation's page, then click that big ol' endorse button.

    What's in it for me?

Being a part of the REWARD program has its perks. Not only will you be standing side-by-side with a broad and diverse cast of nations from all across the east, but you'll be doing your part to ensure our region remains safe and secure. Your endorsements ensure no foreign adversary can harm our region, and strengthens The East Pacific's position in the World Assembly by adding your endorsement to our regional vote. When we go to vote on a resolution, you'll be able to not only have your say, but your endorsement on the Delegate will also add an extra vote to our regional vote (The Delegate's vote is worth however many endorsements they have. For example, if the Delegate has 400 endorsements, our region's vote will be worth 400 votes)

Your participation also grants you several perks in the region. You'll have access to honorary titles, such as 'Hussar of The East' or 'Winged Hussar of The East', and you'll get nice shiny badges to pair! These badges can be displayed with pride in your signature (which appears below your every post) on our LinkRegional Forums, or on the NationStates Forums! You'll be given a special Hussar role in our LinkRegional Discord, giving you access to it's WA channels, which will allow you to help guide our regional vote on every WA proposal. You'll also be entered into occasional giveaways and raffles for your loyalty and hard-work.

    Summary

Welcome to the East Pacific! We are one of the oldest regions out there, with 20 years of experience. We have a lot to offer, including two current tech roleplays and an accessible legislature and executive.

You are reading STEP, The East's guide to NationStates. Each dispatch contains a summary and then more detailed explanations, including screenshots and detailed insights from our experienced players. If you're new, we recommend reading every dispatch in order, but you can also read them independently of one another.

You have either been founded in a frontier or a feeder, two types of regions which accept new nations. If you find yourself in the East Pacific, please read this guide! If you aren't in the East Pacific, go to The East Pacific and scroll down until you see "Move [YOUR NATION] to the East Pacific."

You'll be seeing a lot of recruitment Telegrams, which can get spammy and annoying pretty quickly. To disable recruitment telegrams, head to Settings > Telegrams > Preferences > Block All under "Recruitment".

Nations receive issues once every six hours. Some issues spawn card packs, which contain cards ranked by rarity that you can retain, trade or sell.

    Introduction

Hello and welcome to NationStates, and the East Pacific. You are currently reading STEP, our guide designed to get you jump started in the game. If you're like other newbies, you'll probably have many questions about how everything works. This guide, lovingly written by our hospitality team, is designed to answer all of your questions, and more. If you want to get a quick summary of things and then get launched into things, you will get the jist of things by reading the summaries on top of these dispatches, however our dispatches aim to be short and accessible while also going into enough detail, so we recommend you read them in full.

If you have any questions, we have multiple government members that are willing to answer them! Feel free to ask on the regional message board, or telegram our Delegate, they will be happy to answer any question you might have!

The East Pacific is one of five feeder regions who share fifty percent of all new spawns, with the other fifty percent going to frontiers, regions founded by users which also accept new nations, trading guaranteed security for the privilege. If you've let your nation go inactive and Cease to Exist, and then logged back in, you have likely spawned in one of three restorer regions, which are designed to rehabilitate nations that have returned after a brief period of absence.

If you're reading this, it is likely that you have been founded in the East Pacific, however, if you haven't you are still more than welcome to join, and we would love to have you on board. To move, you should go to the East Pacific's regional page, scroll down until you see the Move [YOUR NATION] to the East Pacific and then click on it.

The East Pacific is an active democracy, and participation can be enjoyed by all that seek to contribute in good faith. If you're interested in joining, STEPs Three onwards will take you through applying to the East Pacific.

    Telegrams

Many regions send you automated recruitment telegrams in an attempt to get you to join their region. There are a lot of these, and it can get spammy and overwhelming fast. Thankfully, NationStates has given you a way to block Telegrams you don't want. To do this, you need to click on the settings button, which is usually found in the top bar of the page.

If you then scroll down to telegrams and go to preferences, you'll see a grid which looks something like this:

Our recommended settings are as follows, however, you are free to choose whatever you want. "Allow Some" occasionally allows telegrams in, and "Allow Most" blocks some. If you click the "block all" for recruitment, your nation will stop receiving the large volume of recruitment telegrams. Keep in mind that your inbox can only hold twenty telegrams.

    Issues and Cards

Issues are problems that you need to handle, and they impact your nations statistics and rankings abroad. Initially you get a higher rate of issues like normal, however, once you've played the game for a while, you only get one issue every six hours. As long as you abide by general decorum, the East Pacific does not penalise you for the way you answer issues - we're a big community, and your type of nation reflects that.

There is no "correct" way to answer issues, only the way that you want to. Every issue changes your statistics, and some might change your national policy. If you want to, there are websites such as this Linkone that give you the general trend in issue outcomes, however using these aren't necessary and you should only do it if you find it fun!

Issues sometimes generate cards. Cards are minted irregularly and are a snapshot of a nation, divided into various classes of rarity, from common to legendary. Cards can be bought, sold and traded on the market.

The Guess Whos Back of Awqnia

Forgive me for what I said yesterday. I haven’t been in the right state of mind for the last couple of weeks or so. I’ve been erratic, sad, angry, and confused. I realize now I handled my situation poorly, which in turn caused me to go off the rail, and delete over a thousand posts, cut some people off, and then leave. It was never my intention to cause anyone to worry, and I am dearly sorry. Just wanted to get that off my chest.

I am a lot better than I was yesterday. There is a lot I cannot say here, as I am still in the dark about some site rules, but thank you.

The Surrealist State of The Bordirigist Republic

A police officer got bored after receiving no single order from his seniors. He surfed the internet with his computer. "What is this?" He clicked the first article in the news section. "The rebranding of Volksaktion? I thought that terrorist group are already defunct." It begins as an interview conducted by the host of a ultranationalist podcast with six of the members of the Voxstapo, the inner circle of the extremist party. "What a lot of nonsense." He clicked the [X] symbol before turning off his computer. Then, he went away to buy some donuts.

A former police officer woke up on the bank of the River Styx. He looks down at the open wound tearing apart his decaying stomach. "It seems I'm dead now. The last thing I remember is a group of missiles raining down in my town." He is filled with terror upon realizing that he becomes an undead being. "The nuclear day (N-Day) costs a lot of lives. We got another one here." He saw a woman sitting with two men. The person on the left has blonde hair while the man on the right has brown hair. "Who are thou?" The blonde man smirked as he walked towards the zombie. "I am Tammuz. My kin got casted down a long time ago by our creator Apsu." The undead being tried to escape by crawling towards the river. "Get outta here. I am accompanying my dear son Adonis and his friend Kore." The zombie threw himself into the river and sinks further until he became one of the vengeful spirits dwelling at the river.

I realize now also, that I shut out the things I love in my life, the things that made me, well me. Which probably didn’t help me much either, so I will try to fall back into old habits. Which hopefully will help some more.

Hey Awq, it’s one thing to get back up but it takes real guts to understand what knocked you down and still get back up again. You got this. If you need us, we’re here
