Thanks for the prompt Xandia swift - I hadn't even thought of that!

I know changing the flag here is just symbolic gesture and in reality it does not help the actual people of Ukraine, but personally I would like to see a lot more Ukrainian flags in NS indicating support for Ukraine, and hope that at least some of those symbolic supporters, like me and others, are in real life actually helping the people of Ukraine with legit donations to fund the effort for that nation to survive. Just picture yourself with no home, life as you know it destroyed, a refugee in another country, being separated from your family, fear for your life and your family's life... All because a pompous self-centered egotistical narcissistic out of touch with reality autocratic ass decided to invade a peaceful democratic nation.

The more support we offer, the sooner and more likely this conflict may end. If the world doesn't stop this now, who's next? where will it end?

Yeah, you're right. Even though it might do little, we cannot forget what He dared to do.
My big fear is that this may not end, either well or at all. Wars can last for a very long time if the circumstances make it. As we're approaching day 14 I am honestly becoming numb. It seems like the unrest in Russia isn't nearly as effective as we thought. He's willing to ruin his country completely and utterly as long as his soldiers can fight. And in a war of attrition, winning against russians would be a first.
I guess what I mean is that we can only last in survival mode for so long. And one wrong step can really push that demented thing over the edge. I am so scared that this may end with a global disaster. How are we supposed to stay sane in a world like this?

Lovelace island, it’s disappointing that Russians aren’t rebelling, though the penalties now make it dangerous to do so. He is apparently getting high approval ratings in Russian polls. It is understandable that you are fearful or anxious, that many of us are. You live next door to the horror, but NATO-member countries should be relatively safe, as long as we maintain sensible diplomatic links. It doesn’t do us any good to always be checking the news. All the best to you.

The Commonwealth of Central Kadigan

It is not surprising the Russian people are not rebelling. The state controls all media there. The Russian people, as far as they know, have nothing to rebel against.

This is partly true, though until recently there have been outlets giving more accurate information, including social media.

Nationalism exists in Russia, as it does in other countries, and the invasion by Russia of Ukraine is apparently playing well with those susceptible to nationalistic fervour.

Considering you can get 15 years in prison just for saying it’s a war instead of “special operations”, it’s remarkable how brave some Russian writers have been in denouncing the invasion.

I have not been on that much of late (real-life duties have taken priority for the time being).

I will *try* and get the quarterly newsletter completed this week, however, as I have missed a lot it may be a bare-bones version. Not sure how much time, at present, I can commit. However, I will endeavour to do something. It is now around a month out of my planned time scale.

The Ukrainian crisis has saddened me. I have updated my flag in support today, and think it is a wonderful idea that we show our support - symbolically and through a possible donation. It is payday tomorrow and I will look further into which charity is best placed for this. I think my usual spend on telegram stamps would be far better placed for this!

It is a harrowing situation. One man with his vision of an ultra-nationalist vision of his country, operating through fear, can cause such distress to the world, and critically, to the people of Ukraine. Land resources and warm water ports access is the long term goal for the fascist regime. Bloodstained psychopathy at any expense to the value of life.

I would ask that both the Sunrise Trail and Central Kadigan please change their flags for a short duration please, as these are the flags that are most prominent as regional representatives. Thanks for your support :).

Sad is the only word I can muster, quite frankly.

Meh. Social media can be more a source of propaganda and misinformation than anything else. The US learned that during the Trump presidency and the two elections that framed it.

That may be true, but just because people get one kind of propaganda, or only see the news they want to see, does that absolve them of responsibility in the matter? We should call Facebook and the others to account, yes, but the US case is instructive. A majority of Republican voters apparently agree that the last election was “stolen” from them even though there is no factual evidence for this. There is plenty of misinformation, but citizens don’t always care as long as it supports their world view.

A prominent Forest resident lives in St Petersburg and in our discussions of this he was keen to point out that Russians have internet access and are reading and watching foreign news. They are well aware of how to compare and evaluate sources and certainly don't uncritically accept the content of state media. Think of Channel 1 as an equivalent of Fox News. It's there, but it doesn't mean nobody in the country knows what's happening.

I'd add that since we in the USA and the UK didn't overthrow our governments when they illegally invaded a sovereign nation it's not entirely fair to criticise the Russian people for not doing so now.

Err... I don't know if that's a fair comparison. It smells of whataboutism. I feel like the main reason americans or brits didn't 'overthrow' their governments is devilishly simple. It's cruel, but for them the lives of middle eastern people don't, uh, 'matter'? At least as much as their neighbours? I know how explosive the topic of immigrants is for you, so please don't take the bait. I just wanted to highlight what I believe to be the core of the problem.

This war, however, is completely different. It's like if the United Kingdom suddenly decided to assault France to retake Normandy, their 'rightful lands' by the virtue of William the Conqueror. Imagine how horrific would it be to see british planes bombing Paris. Imagine the utter shock of the world if british death squads were publicly executing french citizens. Imagine that for days on end the french president would have to actively support the spirits of his soldiers just so they wouldn't give up. THAT is the kind of war we're talking about here! And that is very much the kind of war that could spark a revolution (in my opinion at least)

The Glories Old of Sunrise Trail

People like us. Sure.

Just a thought. There was a huge anti-Vietnam war movement in the United States, and people marched in enormous numbers in London and elsewhere against the invasion of Iraq. The latter wasn't effectively followed through, the former was sustained. Lyndon Johnson did not stand again for US president due to public opinion. In Russia now people can be sent to prison for 15 years just for calling the invasion a war.
