Look, I'd say to have the races of the film make sense.

The main problem with the diversity thing is that it's usually done for the sake of it, usually to make a quick buck or to gain points from the DEIA gang.

If it makes sense to have someone of a certain race there, sure. But don't shamelessly race-swap characters for the sake of "Hey, this character isn't White anymore, and it's diverse now!".

My proposal is to create new stories with diverse casts, within reason. Not to take old stories and turn them into a human rainbow, while consecutively sucking out the soul. (Which is usually the main problem, that the movie/show feels soulless or cash-grabby. Not the fact that it's diverse.)

Yeah sry for coming back to it, been a busy last 2 days... Also I agree with you 100%! Diversity is not the problem, the problem is the industry really just doesn't do it properly, only half-asking it to make profit. God speed!

No my argument is about why it's more acceptable, and perhaps even necessary, to race-swap a traditionally white character than it is one of another race.

This is just a counter to the "but what if they made MLK Jr white" argument people make in response to a race swap because it's kinda insane some people think that's a valid counter.

Considering white flight is a thing, it doesn't really surprise that having minorities on screen is controversial for some.

The "but what if they made MLK Jr white" argument is used against the "why does it matter if Cleopatra is black in a documentary"... It's wrong to race-swap any character, because it's lazy (and also historically inaccuracy as mentioned above, heanse the comparison). Race swapping characters takes all the good traits of a character and throws it out the window, because people take it as "this character was good, but it would be better if they were a different race to make it more 'representative'" which makes this new character's story stained from being just a repainting of another already well loved character.

Make a character that IS the other race and not just a repaint, like Miles Morales from Spider Man. Great character, great storyline, not a repaint. He's just just another retelling of the same story, he has his own distict one.
