Fact of the day: Tornadoes are formed when warm front and a cold front collide with one another, the cold front gets sucked down but the warm front is sucked up, the resulting vortex from the two currents is the tornado we all get to watch and see.

Fact of the day: Slavic languages found in Orthodox Catholic nations use the Cyrillic alphabet; whereas slavic languages in Catholic nations use the Latin script. This came about due to the conversation of pagan or orthodox to catholic religion in many of the western slavic nations, most notably Poland, Slavonia and Croatia, much as it had happened to Germanic nations a few centuries prior.

Fact of the day: In North America, namely Canada, the Canadian Electrician's hand book states that for any electrical circuit the load will not be greater than 80% of the breakers capacity. This was introduced due to the way we manufacture breakers on such a scale, that they aren't always as good as what the max load number says they can take. For example; a beaker can take 15 amperes but with this law, you can only give it 13 amperes of load, how electricians figure this out is by counting how many objects are on the line, 12 lights can be put on a line, or 6 double plugins. So, for a long time, multiple breakers were needed for houses because of this; however, with LED lighting becoming more popular and common, each LED is counted as 0.25 amperes, rather than 1, meaning future homes can have more lights on a single breaker then before.

Sauce: Fishy did a short stint as a Canadian Electrician.

Fact of the day: Toxic materials that get ingested by species at the bottom of the food chain build up in intensity as creatures higher up the food chain eat them, this means that it may not be as harmful to prey animals, but predators may get lethal doses of toxins; this is what happened to eagles across the U.S. which resulted in their eggs' shells being too thin and cracking upon laying, killing the chick inside.

Fact of the day: Solar power plants are always stated to be the cleanest power option, however, that's omitting the fact that solar plants have a life span of ≈20 years before the solar cells break down and are no longer useable, requiring a complete refurbishment and disposal of the parts that can't be recycled, such as the solar cells, which contain toxic materials and have little to no regulation on their disposal. This is also omitting the fact that battery storage only lasts 5 to 10 years before needing replacement and has the same disposal issues.

Fact of the day: Batteries use a decaying acidic reaction that, when attached to an electrolyte that connects to wires and powers the device. This means that once the reaction finishes, no more power can be taken from the battery. Rechargeable batteries use electricity that is taken from an outside source to reverse the chemical reaction through a process known as electrolysis; however this can only be done for so long since the reaction can't be completely reversed.

Fact of the day: Nuclear power plants produce little yearly ambient radiation, so little that coal plants produce more yearly radiation. Both of these yearly radiation levels are actually lower than what you can get by eating a banana.

Fact of the day: The internet was originally created as a network for scientist to share information but was also then decided to allow people to use it for the purpose of free speech.

Fact of the day: In the cold depths of our ocean lives an 8 metre long squid known as the Bigfin squid. This strange looking squid has all ten of its tentacles the same length and has them joined to strange elbow joints that protrude from the body at 90 degrees. It's mantle also has an enormous fin with which is uses to glide through the ocean, silently cruising around.
