A finite amount of automatic guns are legal. Any full auto gun owned prior to 1981 is legal. They were grandfathered in due to an amendment to the National Firearms Act in 1986. This may sound odd, but it was amended to be this way because of Hollywood film portrayals of gangsters using tommy guns. It's funny, but it's true. The congressional hearing about it even cited a few episodes of Miami Vice. Hollywood of course exaggerated the whole "prohibition era gangster" thing. In truth, prohibition mafias were much more covert, and machine guns were rarely used by criminals in the US. I'd say that still holds up to this day. When they are used to commit crimes, they just get more attention. Left-leaning politicians can't really milk a shooting involving a 9mm pistol for a lot of votes. But when a guy walks into a school or church or whatever with an AK-47 and shoots the place up, well, all he has to do is lobby for tighter gun laws and he's damn near guaranteed a re-election. |
