When they are used to commit crimes, they just get more attention. Left-leaning politicians can't really milk a shooting involving a 9mm pistol for a lot of votes. But when a guy walks into a school or church or whatever with an AK-47 and shoots the place up, well, all he has to do is lobby for tighter gun laws and he's damn near guaranteed a re-election.
