The Slouch of Ancient Panther

Nyarlathoggua Triumphant wrote:Was it something I said?

Perhaps it was something you didn't say...

*turns the lamp on the desk suddenly to glare into your face*

Tell us the location of the battleplans for the rebel base! You cannot hold out indefinitely! We have ways of making people like you talk...

*begins to menacingly siphon through a container of flubber*

And who or what have you mistakenly identified as a "people"?

"rebel base"? Have some rebel acid! *slimes the interrogator and oozes away*

Hmm...I suppose I will have to rethink my definition of 'personhood.' It might be more appropriate to leave off the list 'toady horrors' and 'faceless black devils'.

I have heard that some toads may be licked for a hallucinatory experience. I suppose this is somehow analogous to the legend of the frog prince, given the similarities, and that there is something in nature that wants people to place their mouths on small, squat, tailless amphibians.

"Kiss a frog, marry a prince!" "Lick a toad, go on a trip!"

Be careful with those trippy drugs. The Mad Arab wrote "Only those who have partaken of a certain alkaloid herb may see in the flesh a shoggothe". (Of course, he was quite wrong. But the herb does help at seeing the invisible ones, of course.)

Historical note: The Mad Arab was devoured by an invisible monster of some kind in the marketplace of Damascus. I guess he forgot to take his daily herb.

The Slouch of Ancient Panther

I suppose our Mad Arab should have been taking something for his madness, that way he could actually be in his right mind to remember to take his revelatory herbs...poor Abdul. But, your post sent me down a rabbit hole of looking up what alkaloid herbs were. And, it turns out, the wikipedia page for "Alkaloid" is a rich vein for Lovecraftian fiction...

"The first individual alkaloid, morphine, was discovered in 1804 when German chemist Friedrich Sertürner isolated from from the opium poppy, a "soporific principle", which he called "morphium", referring to Morpheus, the Greek god of dreams."

"Beside plants, alkaloids are found in certain types of fungi, such as psilocybin in the fungus of the genus Psilocybe, and in animals, such as bufotenin in the skin of some toads and a number of insects, markedly ants."

"Preparations of plants containing alkaloids and their extracts have long been used as psychoactive substances. Cocaine, caffeine, and cathinone are stimulants of the central nervous system. Mescaline and many indole alkaloids (such as psilocybin, dimethyltryptamine and ibogaine) have hallucinogenic effect. Morphine and codeine are strong narcotic pain killers."

"Some alkaloids can produce developmental defects in the offspring of animals that consume alkaloids. One example is the alkaloid cyclopamine, produced in the leaves of corn lily. During the 1950s, up to 25% of lambs born by sheep that had grazed on corn lily had serious facial deformations, ranging from deformed jaws to cyclopia [and here was attached a pretty horrifying photograph of a Cyclopean lamb]".

How many lives are our cats going to go through anyhow?

The Slouch of Ancient Panther

I'll say one thing, all of this death followed by un-death and then more re-death, it really adds to the spookiness of the place. I can feel the ghost of Herbert West inhabiting these halls...

Let's explore the sticky cavern. Stalagmites! Stalagtites! Sticky bats?

Sorry about kitties ghosting the Ulthar plane.

I've just been growing disillusioned with this website over time, so I don't write so much on it. You know how that feels.

I would offer you some comforting illusions, but all I have are nightmares.

Have you noticed how very bad it smells in that "cave"? There is a reason for that...

My nation is in the top 10% of the World for Public Transport. How can that be? ...unless...

Maybe being absorbed by a traveling shoggoth counts as a trip on public transportation. Yes, that would explain it... and you can meet all sorts of interesting people inside a shoggoth, though the screaming does get in the way of a good conversation.

I've been concentrating primarily on personal writing projects for the factbooks of some of my various nations (well, not this one...I don't have any ideas here). I find it quite rewarding, and it acts as a good reason to continue signing in to nations in a variety of regions. For me, I think it helps to focus on the things that originally drew me to this site, in order to retain interest in coming back during times when my enthusiasm is lowered or life is hectic (for instance, this is currently one of the most stressful periods of my life, probably).

Don't worry about the cats. I am reminded of "blink dogs" in Dungeons & Dragons, which are canines with the ability to "blink" in and out dimensions, jumping about from one plane to the next, and reappearing back whenever and wherever they please. I have seen them flavored as ethereal cats, as well.

It's like a horrifying version of "Fantastic Voyage" or "Innerspace." Or, an equally horrifying version of the story of Jonah inside the Fish, or that scene where Pinocchio and Geppetto are swallowed by the whale. I would watch any of these movies.

A shame. As an ancient, dare I see prehistoric, Panther, I'm sure you would have many fascinating stories to tell. I imagine you predate even our late lamented velociraptors. Of course, I and my ilk (like The Great Old Ones) predate the plankton, but for those who weren't there, it is simply impossible to recreate the majesty, wonder and terror of being a mere spectator of titanic battles between forces the mere sight of which would cause even the stablest human being (or in fact any semi-sentient vertebrate) to retreat into insanity.

It's all a lie. I confess. We present as ancient, but are mere children playing dress up with their parents' evening wear. All bluster, no thunder.

That is a good one. The eyes are beautiful. I'm saving it into my collection of images of big cats that I've got going on my computer. Here's one of my favorites:

That's nice too. But A Cat's image is better. Despite its lack of tentacles.

A fine specimen indeed. If it had a thousand young, it would be perfect.
