It’s more of the idolized version of an Irishman which tends to happen when you live so far away from the old world you cling to old legends and stereotypes.

Take Nepal for example, I’ve never been there I’ve only seen pictures and heard about some events, I know of the civil war and the Gurkhas so in my mind I think the people must be strong however I know better I know they face the same problems as everyone else.

Yeah, that makes sense.

Eh, said civil war ended in 2008. Me and lots of other people here realized how truly unknown we are to rest of the world when many newspapers reporting about the 2015 earthquake still referred to us Hindu kingdom. Or when no one mentioned said blockade that happened soon after.

Wellsia wrote:Spanish-American or Hispanic is the only recognized ethnicity in the US, when filling out official paper work you are asked your race and your ethnicity (either Hispanic or not Hispanic). As far as English-American or German-American, I think since those were the two largest groups at the time of the revolution (10% German), they care more about being Americans then where they came from. The first Speaker of the House, Fredrick Muhlenberg was German. There was some talk of making all official papers to be written in English and German. There was another major influx of German people in the 1850s and 1860s following the failed 1848 revolutions in Europe and the annexations of Prussia after 1866. In fact there were so many Germans living in the US that entire Corps in the Union Army spoke nothing but German. The Irish didn’t really start coming to America till the mid 1800s, and were looked down on as inferiors (Watch the movie ‘Gangs of New York’). The Italian-Americans were not very many till the 1890s and early 1900s, and once again were looked down upon by the German-English Americans. I think they maintained that pride of where they came from as a defense mechanism against the prejudices thrown against them. In Louisiana, we have the Irish Canal, dug by Irishmen living in New Orleans, the reason Irish dug it because it was through the swamp and no one cared how many of them died digging it. In the antebellum social level of New Orleans, the Irish ranked below slaves, in other areas they were the po’ white trash.

Have seen some old posters with stuff like "Irish Need Not Apply".

At first, I thought it was like "this stuff is free for them so they don't need to apply". Only later on did it occur to me that it was entirely different issue.

The Irish were certainly not viewed favorably back in the day. It was mainstream to view them as dirty, uneducated, lazy, idle, good-for-nothing drunkards. And it was mainstream to express these views at every opportunity. Oh and they were Catholics. They swore allegiance to a central authority back in Europe! Catholics were a fifth column that would bring down the great Republic and replace it with monarchy, of course. They couldn't be real Americans. And so the Irish were excluded from business, politics, and society, regardless of their actual financial status or political beliefs (they were not monarchists). Their communities were frequently the targets of violent riots. But culturally they were disposed to respond to oppression with boisterousness and bellicosity. And so they did. They kept their religion, their culture, and made their own way in the country, thank-you-very-much. For all the prejudice and oppression they experienced from nativist Americans, life was better and freer than in Ireland, and so they kept coming over.

July Elections

Scheduled elections took place in July for the positions of Senator for Himes West (roleplay) and Senator for Lyonnesse East (houses).

Wille-Harlia of TCP defeated Krystalveil of WIP with 40 votes to 20 to become Senator of Himes West.

Free Las Pinas (MSPP), Thedairos (TCP), and Haivon (WIP) all entered the first race for Lyonnesse East with the conclusion resulting in a runoff between Thedairos and Free Las Pinas as no candidate reached a 50% majority of votes. The ensuing run-off resulted in a tie that then triggered a vote by the Council of Nine to select the new senator, all of this culminating to the election of Thedairos as Senator of Lyonnesse East.

XKI thanks Marxist germany and The United Royal Islands of Euramathania for their previous service. Congratulations to the winners and commiserations to the other candidates.

New Government Appointments

~ July saw the transition of the Culture Office over to now Cultural Officer Grea Kriopia after HumanSanity's resignation following the end of the XKI Summer Olympics.
~ HumanSanity didn't go far though, as he was appointed by Chief Executive Markanite to serve as the first President of the XKI Cards Co-op.
~ As the Co-op President, HumanSanity gained Free Las Pinas and HN67 as Cards Co-op administrators to help oversee the new venture.
~ Free Las Pinas was also brought on as Casino Shift Manager with last month's Casino revitalization and as Deputy Senator for Lyonesse East following the election of Thedairos
~ Senator Grea Kriopia brought on Wischland as Deputy for Blue Canaria North to aid in the creation of this report.
~ Delegate Kuriko hired Ignis cinere onto the TIBOE team as an official endorser to help boost and maintain endorsements.
~ The evergrowing FA team saw HumanSanity made emissary to Founderless.
~ Our Minister of Education The tasmanian islands sought a new Deputy after the election of Wille-Harlia and hired Pacifical.
~ Senator Wille-Harlia also hired Central russia and Margaux as Deputies for Himes West.

Around the Islands

~ Wille-Harlia was named LinkRookie of the Quarter for his exceptional work as a TITO member, Recruiter, and Deputy Minister of Education, among other positions, as well as his outstanding contributions to the forum and A Taco Archipelago's RMB. Congratulations Wille-Harlia!
~ Islanders enjoyed a multitude of potato-based dishes alongside residents of Spiritus, at a LinkPotato Potluck celebration of Kuriko and The Salaxans' achievements as WA Secretary-General and Vice Secretary-General. All participants are several potato recipes richer, with a few even being lucky enough to receive Kuriko and The Salaxalans trading cards.
~ The XKI Card Co-op is making good progress under the guidance of Cards Co-op President HumanSanity, with plans for a transfer card-sharing system and a mentorship program. The hard work of Co-op members has already facilitated the card rewards for several of this month's events.
~ July's LinkFeatured Nation was Free Las Pinas, whose exceptionally high activity in XKI, alongside their work as an Ambassador, TITO member, and Recruiter makes them more than deserving of this honor. Keep up the good work!
~ Cultural Officer Grea Kriopia gave Islanders a chance to express what real-world sights reminded them of NationStates in a LinkPhotography Competition. Congratulations to Wischland for her 1st place Miniatur Wunderland photo, Wille-Harlia for his tasty 2nd place S'more photo, and Eastern New England for their charming Honorable Mention coastal photo.
~At the end of the month, Hakketomat announced XKI's first-ever LinkTacoVision! Inspired by Eurovision, over a dozen eager nations have already submitted songs. Voting begins early August, so be on the look-out for the competition's results in next month's report.

XKI Game-Side

A July regional poll by Jabberwocky forced Islanders to pick a superpower, but clearly all of the disastrous time travel movie plots did not deter many.

July held some contentious topics but here are some more lighthearted posts from this month...

Dress in layers
Don't cross the streams!
Making good progress
Someone translate please...
Jk...unless?
Conflict Resolution
Have you tried turning it off and then on again?
With great power comes great responsibility
Three cheers for Kuri

Meet A Nation Interview

This month's edition features an interview with one of the newest elected Senators in XKI, Wille-Harlia, on their time in XKI and future plans for roleplay in the region. Aside from their senate seat, WH also serves as an Emissary, Cultural Office Assistant, Deputy Cartographer, and TITO Member.

GK: Let's start with some of your time here. Being a more recent addition to the Islands, could you talk a bit about what attracted you to XKI?

WH: First, the recruitment telegram I received seemed the most sincere of all of them, and offered the most things. Once I got to XKI, the warm welcome I received was amazing, and no question was stupid. The same thing on the forum and the Discord. Then, when I got into some jobs where I could show my thanks, I knew I would stay for good.

GK: Since you mentioned you liked the variety of things XKI offered, have you developed any favorite activities/hobbies in your time here?

WH: There are some hobbies I have here in XKI. One is RPing in ATA with all the other regular ATAers. One hobby I used to have was refreshing to the Job Opportunities page every day for new jobs I’d be interested in. But I don’t really do that anymore now as I have enough jobs. I will also occasionally Debate in the politics section of the Discord, and I also play in the XKI Minecraft server.

GK: Speaking of hard work, you recently faced your first ever election in XKI, how do you feel now looking back at it?

WH: I was recently elected the Himes West Senator, in charge of RP. Looking back on that campaign, I think I did everything right, but I didn’t even use half of my paid advertisements. I think that once I took an early 15 vote lead, I had it won, but there was still good competition from Krystalveil, as we had very similar platforms.

GK: Could you outline some of your goals for the future of RP in XKI?

WH: I have two goals for XKI RP. The first is to improve the quality of RP in the XKI RP region of A Taco Archipelago. The second is to revive the forum and Discord RP.

GK: Big goals! Are there any future projects you can tease our readers about in regards to RP?

WH: On the Discord, I can tease an Insanity RP event, on the forum, a medieval and a WW3 event, and in ATA, a whole plethora of events that will make up an RP event with a common enemy for all.

GK: Very interesting, what are you most excited for in the future of RP?

WH: I am most excited to see the results of my attempts!

GK: For sure. Lastly, what do you think the biggest challenge will be in regards to your work in RP?

WH: This a challenge that will take thinking to overcome: How to get the game side RPers on the forum and Discord.

Until next month, your XKI Update Staff is signing off - Grea Kriopia and Wischland

In fairness, English is the most widespread language, and it's not too unreasonable to at least ask if they know it before making a fool of yourself

I'm not projecting. If I see an opportunity to take a jab at the country I'm going to take it. Doesn't mean that it's a lost cause or the worst place on the planet, but only singing praises is a great way to be out of touch with reality

That is something I have never understood; I get that you can get attached to a certain place but I have never felt pride or other strong emotions for any nation or for what they stand. How does that work?

The thing that confuses me the most is that often the most loud and proud supporters of the country.... haven't really done much for the country. It's one thing to have served in the military, it's an entirely different thing to bitch about taxes, watch Fox news all day, and only work a part time job as a subpar mechanic.

Though this is I guess part of not really understanding pride in things you haven't contributed to, not specifically for country alone. I guess I'm supposed to be proud when a sports team, that I have contributed nothing to and it would be no better or worse off if I'm dead and gone and doesn't have a clue I exist, happened to play well?

Nhoor wrote:That is something I have never understood; I get that you can get attached to a certain place but I have never felt pride or other strong emotions for any nation or for what they stand. How does that work?

I am just glad to be part of the big family of people that call themselves Americans. I think it is quite nice to be an American. Perhaps it is different for others, and that's OK. My family has lived in New England for many years, and I enjoy hearing stories of relatives who died fighting for the North in the Civil War, for example.

I am especially attached to New England, I don't really care for the Deep South. If I had to show a new arrival to the USA the best parts of America, I would definitely show him around Massachusetts... call me biased! There is so much history here, and I think MA residents really value their connection to the American Revolution. That is an example of something I draw pride from as an American.

I would never hesitate to point out the problems in our country... prisons, racism, drug laws that are too heavy, a bloated government, corporations are too powerful, etc. Maybe you disagree with the size of the US military or some such thing. Personally, I support a big military, but I don't expect other people to agree with me per se. Despite what's wrong with America, I'm not ashamed to live here.

I'm not ashamed to live here either. It's better than a whole lotta other places in the world. But in my head it feels weird to brag about things that are expected behavior. Oh wow you don't have a genocidal despot in charge of your orwellian surveillance state. Congrats for not being sh*t? It's not something to boast about. That's like expecting praise for not soiling yourself daily as a 30 year old. It's also less interesting, since it's more about what.... is, not what can be/needs to be done

From our former class of 42, I am actually of the four odd one outs still in our hometown Pokhara. A lot of people went to Kathmandu, Australia or US or have become soldiers (mostly in Indian army, a few in Singapore Police, a couple of guys in Nepal's Armed Police Force and one dude is in the British Gurkhas). Not many opportunities here unless you set up your own shop.

You won't believe the amount of people who say "AM, why are you still here in Pokhara? AM, when will you migrate?"

What information do I have about you (hobbies, interests, country, etc.)?

What kind of nation are you trying to make?

1) I found out through spam by telegram.

2) My only hobby is staying in the government house. My nation is a moralist democracy, we seek greatness throughout the world.

3) A nation of great wealth and much political freedom, in my nation the donation of organs after death and military service is mandatory. And we are based on a capitalist economy.
