The Matriarchy of Gypsy Lands

It's "Mothers' Day" in the USA, a made up holiday honoring Moms, so that the big businesses dealing with greeting cards, flowers, and various other useless gifts can make money.

I'm off to an obligatory dinner.

Somehow, I have a strong feeling that the idea that flowers are useless is not all that commonly held. The Moms and potential Moms I know seem to like 'em.

I was a seafarer, in Real Life. Many years ago. Not gonna bother you with old salt stories, but let me tell you...I been on the the far side of the world. Been to extremes. From the fjords of Norway to the stifling heat of New Caledonia. Saw things I can't explain. Witnessed both the glories and the failures of human nature. Including discrimination, and I was right there discriminating. You see, on a merchant vessel deck hands and engine room men have "true seafarer special status". Stewards and cabin boys didn't. They weren't real seafarers. They didn't get their hands dirty. But - between you and me - it's a good idea to be respectful to the ship's cook. Do it, if you ever think to go to sea. You can thank me later.
Seafaring isn't for the faint of heart. I saw people dying in the North Sea.
Children.
I still dream of it. But my word, it was the most extraordinary thing I've ever done, and I would do it all over again. The good and the bad.

Here in the USA we have the "merchant marines." Were you a part of something like that? I know someone whose son was accepted into the "Merchant Marine Academy." At the time I didn't even know it existed. It has standards rivaling West Point. And a congressman has to recommend you for admission.

Exactly like that, M'am.
It included military-grade fire fighting training. Back in my day graduating was going through a tunnel, pitch black, filled with obstacles and dense smoke, wearing a World War 1-like gas mask, sergeants shouting "give up, maggot, you can't save any one, you can't even save yourself".

Now can someone help me with my homework?

I think I did this right, right?

Ah, when Gypsy Lands likes your comment when you roll out the big table of food and snacks, you know you're a true Gypsy. Even if you only have an embassy and aren't actually from the region.

I know all too well that United-staters call themelves Americanos.

In truth, we're all Americanos. From Alaska to the Tierra del Fel Fuego.

And let me tell you more.
Some of us come come Iberia. In Europe.
A land of Legend and Myth. Of Supreme Mystery.
Of Portugal. Of the Knigths Templar. Of Port du Graal. The Holy Chalice.
The Knigths Templar knew things. They brought it to us. Those Cavalieri rode the waves, under the Flag of Christ.
Unlike the foolish Christopher Columbus.

Believe me. His seamanship was overrated.
He was sailing to Asia. Little did he know the Earth was twice as long, he would find a new Continent. A fool, he was....
Unless...

What did Columbus do, upon sailing back from the the Caribbean ?
What ?
He reported to King John II of Portugal, three times.
He visited Portugal from North to South, extensively, before reporting back to Spain.

He visited the Portuguese Royal Family ! Why would he do that ?!?!
His Spaniards seamen were impatient to going back to Cádiz. But he was adamant. He visited Portuguese Royals, as one after one.
That gotta mean something.

This is History

Was he a Portuguese masterspy, drawing off the scent from the real riches The Portuguese were really looking for, The Spice Islands in the East ! Indonesia, Malaya, China and Japan ?
