9 / 11 (memento mori)
Washington DC. September 11, 2001.7:39 AM.
Many workers are filtering into the Capitol building. They stand outside the doors, filtering in for security checks.
Two women stand by the Capitol Reflecting Pool.
The sun is shining well today. It is bright, and light and airy. It is warm, for this time of year, and the National Mall isn’t entirely filled up yet. The gardeners are mowing the lawns.
7:41 AM.
A plane assumed to be off course, clips the Washington Monument.
It slices into the plane, and cracks the marble obelisk. The monument breaks and cracks. The plane crashes at speed into the grass, forcing dozens to run out of the way, many crushed under the plane.
The Capitol workers panic, rushing inside.
The two women at the Reflecting pool freeze.
The plane slides to a halt.
Finally.
7:43 AM.
Police and firemen are called to the scene. Hundreds of dead, dozens injured. The Washington Monument damaged beyond imagination.
Reports state it is a terrible accident.

New York City.
Catastrophe.
A plane crashes into the South Tower of the World Trade Centre.
It is loud, and then silent. The smoke billows out, as the engine erupts. Fire slowly spreading. The tower stays standing.
Silence.
Screams.
The sprinklers begin going off, as thousands and thousands of people inside begin a slow and orderly evacuation in the building. They are stuck in the stairs for an hour. The people atop, unable to get out.

Firemen arrive at the scene.

The South Tower begins to collapse.
It is almost silent.
A slow roar. A crumble. A groan.

They explode, and groan.
They stop, they pancake, at the twenty-fourth floor.
The building holds.
Partially.
New York City.

Hundreds remained behind.
It felt safe.

It sinks to the ground.
Crumbled.

A roar.
A groan.

The Statue of Liberty is engulfed in smoke and ash and dust from the attack.
Over a thousand emergency staff die.
The total death toll is still unknown.
The world watches in silence.

A haze floats off into the sea.
