Qualifying for the 1972 AFC Asian Cup took place over the course of 1971. It featured a first round group stage of 7 groups, from which the top two teams would advance automatically. The 4 best ranked third-placed teams would advance to a knockout play-off round to determine the final spot. Siam, as hosts, qualified automatically.
