News from TGW:
  • Early on in February, we joined our friends in Thaecia for their Hunger Games event and nearly started a diplomatic incident after First Warden GK slayed Thaecia PM Marv in the first round

  • February saw two Command promotions with Warden Westinor being promoted to Lieutenant for their insatiable internal work and Constable Varax Zwei joined the ranks of the Commanders after months of diligent dedication and innovation in the region

  • Long-time Delegate Saint Tomas and the Northern Ice Islands stepped down after roughly 9 months of constant service as Delegate with Delegate Witchcraft and Sorcery being named as her successor and currently in transition

  • In the recent nuclear apocalypse, for the first time The Order at large joined ranks with The Potato Alliance to party down in the end of days while some dastardly Horsemen still snuck out the back to fling nukes and rain destruction

Factions:
January

Factions are teams of members of The Order of the Grey Wardens community named after various Dragon Age regions that compete with each other in a friendly way for Darkspawn Kill Points (DKP). DKP is earned through a set of tasks/activities known as Quests like recruiting, attending updates, participating in guardian missions, and more.

This month's DKP saw a massive points coup by The Anderfels through the efforts of Bestinor to unseat Orlais from their brief time at the top of the leaderboard and punting Nevarra/Ferelden further down from the rankings

The Anderfels - 1225

Orlais - 861

Nevarra - 654

Ferelden - 498

Tevinter - 442

Featured Warden: Kanglia
February

Kanglia has been an on-and-off presence in the Order for over half a decade, first joining in the summer of 2017. They're mainly known for their work in The Union of Democratic States' Armed Forces, but have been a longtime member of TGW and have consistently returned to the organization when they are active on NationStates. This month, despite some scheduling difficulties, we sat down with Kanglia for a quick chat about their background and career as a defender.

Quebecshire: Hello Kanglia and thank you for the interview! How are you today?

Kanglia: I’m well, hope all is the same with you!

Quebecshire: Yep! So how did you end up becoming a Warden?

Kanglia: Oh gosh, so back when I first started in NS and really transitioned into the R/D side of gameplay Lenlyvit was the head of the UDSAF, which was my main regional military at the time. Lenly’s the one who trained me and eventually i just felt so much like an unofficial Warden that it only seemed right to officially join.

Quebecshire: This was 2016 or 2017, right? What was military gameplay like for you back then?

Kanglia: Middle of 2017, yeah.

Kanglia: It was a little different, script usage wasn’t as common on both sides, at least it didn’t seem to be, and there definitely didn’t seem to be nearly as much in terms of pile sizes. Other than that I didn’t really know as much as I do now so I just felt a lot more like someone who just defended in the background, whereas I at least now know I can answer a lot more questions than I used to that newcomers could have

Quebecshire: That makes sense. From what I understand scripts would have been pretty common especially higher up, but the intensive tagging and chasing was less common. Since you started in the UDSAF, what brought you to TGW?

Kanglia: Yeah Breeze was definitely still around, but I don’t think it was as vital as it is today with how fast pace updates can be now. I think most of what brought me to TGW was the community, as much as I love the UDS and the UDSAF will always be my passion project of this game, we’ve never exactly been a large force and while we have a great regional community, TGW has always been a much stronger community with defenderdom and that’s really what gravitated me to TGW

Quebecshire: Gotcha, TGW definitely has a strong pull like that. You’ve kind of been in and out over the years, what brought you back most recently?

Kanglia: most recently I just feel like I have been in a much better place to where this game can be a part of my life without me sacrificing anything really. This game always has a pull on people right, and it’s difficult to actually leave leave after all. I never really intended on staying away as long as I have on and off to begin with, life just gets in the way sometimes.

Quebecshire: Yeah, definitely get that. Have you found it easily to settle into current defending or have there been some challenges?

Kanglia: A bit of both quite frankly, the pace at which update occurs has made it a little more difficult, as has the immense length of update, although it’s certainly gone down in length from what it was. but defending doesn’t change a ton in practice, just some new strategies and new things to work on

Quebecshire: Definitely makes sense (sorry for the delay, hopefully we can continue as we go here). I've heard the horror stories of 3 hour updates. You recently hit Senior Warden status after quite a bit of time being very close to it, was there any sense of fulfilment hitting that point?

Kanglia: A ton. A lot of my updates were pre TGW so it was nice to finally hit that status, certainly regret it taking this long but I’m glad that I at least got this one off of my checklist!

Quebecshire: Well congrats nonetheless. Do you have a favorite operation since returning?

Kanglia: If I had to pick I’d say New Westphalia although I very much so enjoy the process now so the continued sieges in Equestria were a good way to show continued resolve

Quebecshire: Heh, fair enough. Equestria was rough but I see the fun in the sieges. Going forward so you have any goals you want to hit now that you’re a Senior Warden?

Kanglia: Aside from just continuing to build on what we as Wardens have been able to build, help mentor some of the younger wardens and guardians and try to be a factor in a lowkey way the same as I always have

Quebecshire: Seems simple enough, are you still active in the UDS or really just hanging around TGW these days?

Kanglia: Ironically enough I actually just finished up a Senate term in the UDS and I’m still currently the head of the UDSAF. We’re still small in terms of our regular updaters, but when the tides of battle can be turned by one or two endorsements, I still see us as a valuable resource

Quebecshire: Absolutely, and you guys were quite helpful during Islamic States. Is there any particular advice you’d give to a new defender starting out these days?

Kanglia: Definitely start by mastering the basics. You can gain so much valuable information off of update. Practice makes perfect and if even if you’re following people you’re working with in update you’re going to be better off. Don’t be afraid to ask for help either, there’s so many people with so much knowledge that you can gain. And really the best advice I can give is just to have fun, this is a game after all, don’t burn yourself out because that’s just going to ruin your desire to be around and the best ability is availability

Quebecshire: That all sounds like some solid advice. Before we wrap this up, do you have any final comments?

Kanglia: Nothing major, but I really do appreciate the friendships that I’ve made along the way with TGW and the entirety of defenderdom, I really appreciate how close knit a community we are and I think that that makes us all better.

Quebecshire: Indeed, TGW is definitely held together a lot better than most places. Thank you for your time Kanglia!

Kanglia: Likewise!
