Gun Culture of Great-Montenegro

Warrior Culture: Firearms, Martial
Arts and the Eternal Montenegrin Warrior Spirit

Given its long history and the fiery, independent nature of Montenegrin society, it is little wonder that they evolved into a martial people. Before the modern country was created, mountainous Montenegrin tribes and clans dominated society and often feuded with one another. As such, virtually all men and boys began learning to use weapons from a very young age, and often used them in either blood feuds or when fighting invaders. Traditional Montenegrin costume is usually incomplete without a pistol and dagger held in a man's sash.

In the modern era, apart from the 40 years of communist rule, guns became an integral part of Montenegro's warrior culture. Around the turn of the 20th Century, King Nikola I made it compulsory for all Montenegrin males to own a Gasser-Pattern revolver. Given its historic significance, the Gasser is the official heritage pistol for the country. The military became an important and unifying element within Montenegrin society, and national service helped to bring a greater sense of national community and identity through years in the army. The militia would form the backbone of the military's non-professional reserves, and these two forces combined have been essential to Montenegrin independence and providing a modern warrior culture.

Great-montenegro continues to promote this warrior ethos within its armed forces, and as a civic virtue for non-military civilians. The majority of Montenegrins do service within either the military or National Militia, and are very proactive practitioners in the use of firearms. Compulsory ownership of firearms such as the M18 rifle, M86 shotgun, the M-10 rifle and M97 revolver have allowed the nation to make the whole population into a citizens militia.

One further feature of Montenegrin martial spirit was the promotion of various types of armed and unarmed martial arts and combat styles. The Royal Armed Forces train soldiers in the use of a modified variant of SAMBO, a Russian martial art and combat sport, and civilians across the country are encouraged to participate in local martial arts clubs. This martial training has the added benefit of promoting fitness and healthy living, which has done wonders to break the stereotype of Montenegrins a lazy people.

At age 18, when every boy is required to begin training as part of the National Militia, he is required to perform an initiation ritual. This 'initiation' involves firing 3 shots from a Gasser M1870, the 'Montenegrin' Revolver, at his local MNM shooting range, in addition to an M1870 Berdan II rifle. These first shots represent each boy's initiation his local militia unit.

Each militia unit has a small collection of Gasser revolvers, which are used as part of this initiation ceremony. The Gasser M1870 was the first revolver which was made mandatory to own by King Nikola I in 1910, with firearm ownership being extremely common for over a century prior for the independent-minded Montenegrins. This has been a part of the initiation into the MNM since its foundation.
